Has anyone access to the Army Lists 1805-1812 please?
Seeking information about Ensign Hamer Gaskell who died at Cape Henry, Virginia, in 1812. He was a full-time professional soldier (1802) and in 1812 was commander of the Liverpool Rifle Corps.

Hello, Magnus,
It might help to look for records of the Liverpool Rifle Corps first as a help to finding info on Ensign Hamer Gaskell.
The National Archives have a reference for the Liverpool Indendent Rifle Corps. GB/NNAF/C77360
The Liverpool Record Office have 1803-4 records ref 356 IND
http://www.liverpool.gov.uk/Leisure_and_culture/Local_history_and_heritage/index.asp?render=liquid.
An enquiry there might help.

Since I received your email re Hamer Gaskell's death and bankruptcy, I have found a newspaper reference in 1812 which indicates he died at Cape Henry (Virginia) Hamer Gaskell late commander of the rifle corps of Liverpool.I no know he was in the permanent army. Regards

Hi Magnus - I think there is another thread on this somewhere - I can't find it but I remember finding several references in Google Books and the Gazette a while back.
Anyway from the Gazette 23/2/1802 we know that Capt Hamer Gaskell from the Cambrian Rangers joined the 70th Foot at that time as Ensign by purchase. Two more regiments to check out!

Hi Laura,
I see that as well as your interest in the Chalmer family you also have an interest in the Gaskells.
I have a letter written in Liverpool in 1797 by Alicia Gaskell to her friend a Mrs Weanwright.
In the letter Alicia mentions Mr Chalmer, who I believe she was staying with.
I can let you have a transcription of the letter if it is of any interest.

Cliff:
I'd love to have a copy of the letter and to sort out the relationships. Francis Chalmer, Corn Merchant, 1755-1809 m. Anne Gaskell. Looking forward to hearing from you. Laura McDuff, Melbourne

Thanks for explaining the relationship Laura.
Presumably Alicia was a sister to Ann who married Mr C.
I have tried to send you a note via the Personal Message facility.
I do not think that I am able to send any attachments via Rootschat and the letter is 4 f'scap pages long!
Alicia refers to Mr Chalmer being in London and having an interview with Mr Pit, I presume that is the Pit who was Prime Minister at the time?
