Hello guys,
Can I please have some assistance on tracing two families from Tooting, London? The Thatcher family and the Hillier family.
I am looking for any trace of the following families on any of the census'.
Charles Thatcher, a Labourer, and his son Thomas. Thomas was born c1874, and by 1902 his father Charles had died, so there may be a chance of finding him in the 1901
Thomas' marriage certificate in 1902 lists his current address as Garratt Street, I am presuming this is in Tooting.
The second family are the Hillier's. I am looking for an Elizabeth Hillier, born c1881, daughter of Charles Hillier, a greengrocer. Her address in 1902 is given as Summer's Down, Tooting. If the families are not in Tooting they will be in Wandsworth...I think :P
Would be grateful for any info on these two families.
Thanks for reading,
Matthew. :) :)

Start by looking for possible matches in the 1901 index. you can then check back to 1881 as a starting point.
for instance,
Charles Hillier 46y b Brixton living Wandsworth Surrey. Greengrocer (& others)
address also:
there are plenty of Garrett LANE (Wandsworth, St Andrews) no Garratt street.

Hi guys,
Charles Thatcher was dead by 1902, he is listed as a Labourer on the marriage cert.
The name of his wife (Thomas' mother) is not given. I don't have any place of birth either I am afraid, save what is on the census provided above.
The witnesses to the wedding was a man called George Newman.
Thomas is listed as a Labourer too, like his father was.

Hello Matt :)
Thomas Arthur Thatcher was born August 16, 1872, Wimbledon, Surrey, father Charles Thatcher, mother Emma Thatcher. I've been unable to locate a marriage so far. It appears they were cousins.
Eliza Elizabeth Hillier was born January 17, 1877, Lambeth, father Charles Hillier, mother Annie McDonald. Charles & Annie were married June 14, 1875, Lambeth.
My OH's grandmother was Helen Thatcher, born Feb 20, 1911 daughter of Thomas & Eliza.

Hello,
I have just come across this site. My gr.grandfather was Charles Hillier who you mentioned. His youngest daughter, Catherine, was my grandmother - who I remember well. How are you related to them?
Regards, Joan.

Hi Joan-
Welcome to rootschat ;D I just found both of your posts. Your Catherine's eldest sister was Eliza Elizabeth Hillier/Thatcher and she is/was my husband's great grandmother. I think that makes you and my mother in law second cousins!
I can't send you a personal message until you've posted at least one more time. So if you reply to this post, I will send you a message with my email so we can make direct contact.
Best wishes
Heather

Hello Heather,
Thanks for your reply.
I'm not sure whether you received the message which I sent specifically to you, saying that my daughter was in touch with you last year (and scanned my Mum's photo to you).
We haven't looked at this side of the family for a while as my daughter has been concentrating on her husband's family tree search.
I remember my mother mentioning the name Harry Parish but I didn't know the connection. She mentioned Amy Thatcher most, was she your mother-in-law's mother (daughter of Eliza)?
The message shown which I posted yesterday was to Reaybo (Matthew). However, I have looked at his tree and can't see the Hilliers or Thatchers (mentioned in his posts).
I look forward to hearing from you again.
Best wishes,
Joan.

Hi guys,
The post I made a year ago, because at this time I was helping a friend with her family tree, and her gran, who was born a Thatcher in Wandsworth. She no longer has an interest in the tree and unfortunately her grandmother is laissez-faire about the whole thing now. Sad I know but it was just me trying to help, thus why I posted...on her behalf.
Sorry if I lead any of you down the wrong line of thinking we were personally related.
Reaybo :)

Hello,
Thank you for replying. Now I understand why I couldn't find these two surnames on your family tree.
Shame that the lady related to Thatcher and Hillier isn't now interested as she is probably related to me.
Well done for all the work you've done on your own tree. You must be very pleased.
Thanks again.
Regards, Joan.
