Title: Holwell
Post by: Grabridge on Saturday 08 March 08 08:11 GMT (UK)
I know Holwell was in Beds until 1897.  I want looking for information about my Gt Grandparents between approx. the 1650's & 1680's.
Does anyone have access to the Parish Registers? I am interested in the names Woodfield, Eaton & Empey? - Thanks

Holwell parish register has been extracted onto the IGI at www.familysearch.org.

Plenty of Woodfields, but just one marriage for each of the Empey/Eaton names

It's easier to access via http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle
where Holwell is found under Herts

David

PS Did you ever get the Wootton birth certs? Were they illegitimate as we suspected?

I went to Bedford Library this morning & tried to find Holwell PR transcriptions, the index card said Holwell was with the Shillington entries, but that mfght have meant Holwellbury hamlet ?  As Holwell parish was transferred to Herts in 1897 then most likely the PRs were not transcribed by the Beds Record Office.

However from the Shillington PR

Woodfield

Baptism  5 Oct 1625 John son of Hugh Woodfeild
1 Feb 1628 James son of Hugh Woodfeild

Marriage 29 Oct 1617 Hugh Woodfeild to Thomansin Hoore

Burial  8 May 1632  Hugh Woodfield

Empey/Empie/Impie
Burial 3 July 1659  Thomas Empie  son of Edward Impie

No mention of any Eaton name

Regards John

John
Thank you so much for going to all this trouble for me.

It's odd, as whilst a Holwell transcript  isn't included in BLARS list of publications, www.genuki.com states under Holwell that a transcript is available from Beds FHS! But Beds FHS doesn't list it either.

I think you're right John. They've not been transcribed, at least not by BLARS. But at least they've been extracted onto the IGI

By the way I have a hard copy of the Shillington Parish Register and it certainly does not include the families I am looking for.

In the attached list, Holwell is not detailed as being transcribed by Bedfordshire Archives; it just says the Parish Records are with the Herts Record Office.

Hi Grabridge,

Can't help with Holwell but I looked at the Pirton Database. Pirton and Holwell lie within two miles of each other. There were 19 entries for Woodfield/Woodfills round about the 1780s. William was a Cordwainer. Any help? No Eatons but a single entry for a Thomas Empey 1663 Hearth Tax.

Hi Grabridge,

Looks like we are looking for the same people in Howell; trying to extend Stephen Woodfield, Elizabeth Empey, Lydia Eaton and in my case Ann Auburn.  Would you like to exchange info?  I'm on GenesReunited too.  I also have Wooton relatives from Beds and Bucks in my tree.
