I've been very fortunate, since starting my tree a few months back I have quickly been able to go back several generations but have hit the brick wall that manyu encounter. Even other public trees which have been very helpful appear to have hit the same issue.
I am looking for records attached to William Deller b.1801 in Rickling Essex. I know he married a Sarah and the 1951 and 1961 show them as living in Essex. However the 1941 has them appearing as Dellow. In addition a record found on SEAX (Essex Archives Online) shows a removal order in 1929 for a William Dellow, wife Sarah and child from Henham to Quendon.
I have tried everything to find either a marriage record or Williams birth record, Pallots, Boyds and other sources have not shed any further light and boy would i love to go back another generation.
Any help most appreciated.

Have you discounted the marriage included in IGI of William Deller on 5/3/1826 at St Leonard's Shoreditch to Sarah Tart?
-
Well it just shows you. You think you've covered all basis and then someone out there offers a lending hand. :D
Looking at the census records this would be about the right date? Any ideas on birth records of these two?
-
That said the census records show Sarah as being born in 1811. That would make her 15/16 at marriage which is possible.
Have to question whether they would have gone to Shoreditch to wed when both were living in Essex.
-
If you traced them in 1851 and/or any subsequent census you will then have their birthplace(s) which may confirm the marriage as the one you want and give clues to their baptisms etc
The 1830/40s were very tough for those living in rural areas. Many went from being agricultural workers or weavers to try to find work in London. Many weavers went from Essex to be weavers in Spitalfields and Shoreditch etc only to find that too many others had the same idea.

You are obviously an expert in this area/region. Can you suggest any good sources to check for baptism records for William. I'm more interested of course following the Deller line back.

Just thought you might be interested to know that my gt.gt.grandparents were married in Whitechapel in 1848, although both gave their residence as Orsett, Essex. I suspect there was a family connection with Whitechapel, but don't rule out the possibility that your ancestors did a similar thing.
Mike.

In tracing family history you have to expect variations in the spelling of names, particularly because the entries in official records (census, parish registers) were made by others. So a variation from Deller to Dellow is only to be expected.
Because you need to confirm whether or not that marriage is the one you need, you need to consider
(a) what other info is shown in the marriage entry of 1826 at St Leonard's Shoreditch. This is likely to be available at London Metroplitan Archive.
(b) the birthplaces in Essex revealed by the censuses of 1851 and after. You need to know what parishes to look in for pre 1837 BMD.

Hi Matthew,
There is a good website "The Deller Family". I googled Dellow, and trawled through and found it.
It's well set up, with descriptions of the names (Dellow, Deller, Dellar etc), and the counties they inhabited, and where they moved and when. Recommended!
