Hi Chris  :)

Personally I use Photoshop 7 and sometimes Photoshop CS2, but others prefer elements.  I have not used that myself  but restorers on here get brilliant results with it.  I prefer colouring with layers, which is why I love photoshop.  It is a very individual choice I think.  I believe there are a few free trials you can download, but others will know more about them than me.  Whatever you decide to try, someone on here will be able to help you to get the best from it, we all use lots of different programs, and we all like to help out.

Good luck with it, and enjoy yourself, remember, if it isn't fun it's work!!........ ;) ;D

Hope this helps.

I use
Elements 6 or CS2
Elements is about 80% the same as the full photoshop program, CS3 is the latest but very expensive! Elements is very much cheaper.

There are only a couple fo things you can't do with Elements but as a beginner or an intermediate level - you might not even notice the difference apart from the layout is different  ;D

I would suggest you look on E*ay for Elements, its quite reasonable on there.

A few people also use Paintshop Pro,  you can get good results from it, but it takes a little bit of getting used to.

Good luck... I hope you have plenty of free time, its addictive!

Hi Chris
If you want to try out these two programs on a free 30 day trial then go to:-
WWW.adobe.com/products/photoshopwin/     and download, Free trial for Photoshop Elements 6.
http://apps.corel.com/lp/psppxi/5658/index.html and down load Free Trial for Paintshop Pro X2
and if you Google either of the two programs you will find lots of advice on them.
I hope that you find this helpful

it's a 30 day trial, i'll probably just get the hang of it and the trial will be up!!!!

Chris

Go for the cheaper software like Elements (I'm still using Version 4).  There is a free trial with that too.  It's easy to use and it contains everything you need and as I've always said, it's not the software...it's what you do with it that counts.  ;)

Hi Chris,
like Caz has said Photoshop Elements 6 seems more popular and there is lots of help on here (but at the moment is a bit more expensive on Amazon), but i would try both of them and get the one you like best.
Happy hunting,

Goodo a chat about software  ;D

I use CS2 ... not because I'm incredibly advanced and need anything that techy ! ... but because that's what my OH has here at home.

It was certainly insanely confusing for me to start with and I have always wondered what Elements might be like, so thank you for the links Dai ... hope I will be able to have a look at them and maybe get a free trial  :D

:o I'm assuming they are Mac friendly  :-\

  Hi Chris,
                 I've got Elements 2.0 , 4.0, 5.0 plus loads of others.

You will find that they all have the basics & more.

I've just purchased Serif Photoplus 11 complete with album plus4 and
a very thick user manual for £ 13-00 inc postage direct from Serif.

It has got everything that all the other programmes have , Layers,Masking etc. etc.

Did I need it? No! but for that price I can give it to one of my nieces as a present.
Of course I will tell her it cost me £60-00 ;D ;D ;D

      Tomkin ;D ;D ;D ;D

      Also try www.freeserifsoftware.com
there are five free programmes there including photoplus 6.0  It's old but it's got everything
you need.   So you can do plenty of practising for nothing.  Of course they will then have
your e-mail and occasionally present you with offers, but over the years it's never annoyed me.

I agree with Tomkin Serif Photoplus has everything you need, I'm on version 9 but seriously considering an upgrade.
(There DTP software Pageplus is also excellent)

Unfortunately the Elements free trial is not availble until the end of March for people with Apple/Macs

Don't think any of the others mentioned are usable   >:(

Thank you Tomkin
Can't see anything there but that's probably because I'm useless at finding computer stuff !  ;D  ;D  ::)

I'll just carry on with CS2 and get the elements free trial in a couple of weeks ...
thanks again
