Title: Preston Guild
Post by: Christopher on Thursday 06 March 08 17:17 GMT (UK)
I came across the expression Preston Guild in a book I'm reading at the moment so being curious have googled the phrase to see what it's all about.

The right to hold a Guild Merchant was conferred upon the Burgesses of Preston by King Henry II in the charter of 1179; the associated Preston Guild is a civic celebration held every 20 years, with the next due to be held in 2012. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston#Guild_Merchant

There are three short videos on YouTube showing the 1972 Preston Guild parade. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtnRWtbjBt8

The Preston City Council website contains a good article on the subject which is headed "Once Every Preston Guild." www.preston.gov.uk/GeneralM.asp?id=SX9452-A77F9FB8&cat=1806

Nice post Christopher  !!!

I can remember my Pa using the phrase "Once Every Preston Guild" but never really thought as to where it came from, it was just part of family language.

Really Interesting Thanks !

I lived on the procession route of the 1992 Guild, a fantastic week of celebration, in fact a great year of events.  I still only live 800yds from city centre and am eagerly looking forward to the next Guild in 2012.

This is a subject dear to my heart, both of my parents were born in Preston, and recently I found out that we are related to Henry & Mabel Astley-Bell (both JP's) who were the Guild Mayor and Mayoress in 1920-1921.

Luckily I was able to purchase on Ebay a coffee mug and a couple of plates commemorating this event with their photo's on them. These are now proudly displayed next to the 1992 Preston Guild Lledo Model car, and a 1992 Preston Guild Churches Procession Medallion, my Mum thinks I'm hooked on collecting guild Memorabilia, and I think she may be right !!!

I too have very fond memories of the 1992 Guild. The Pagents and processions were a joy to watch. I sincerely hope Preston City Council make the 2012 Guild even better.

My Mum and Dad, my Husband, Daughter and I are all planning to come back to Preston in 2012, does anyone know the date in 2012 when the guild will be, as we'd like to plan our trip around the date.

My sister took part in the last Guild in 1992, when she was 9.

My dad has all these old books and pamphlets from past Guilds, one going back to the 1880s.

Hi Debbie

The main festivities of the 1992 Guild were held in one week in September, sure it was the second week.

I will find out for you

Thanks for that Simon, it will be around the same time as we were there last year, so that will work out good, as we found August/Sept a good time to visit.

I believe in RootsChat wholeheartedly, but can we really be responsible for the consequences of a minii meet in Preston in 2012. That would be one heck of a party to cause all of that.

As long as we get Guild Week out of the way first.  Looking forward to it, I worked the last one, I ran a club on the procession route and was mad busy all week.
