Title: Leeds Town Hall
Post by: rushton on Thursday 06 March 08 15:20 GMT (UK)
Does anyone living in Leeds pass the Town Hall? I believe there is a Commerative plack in the Town Hall to the Leeds volunteers who joined up in the Boer War. If you are passing could you look and see if the name of Thomas Claydon Baldwin is there amongst them. It is a long shot but I would be most grateful. Eileen

Eileen,

I would guess you got your information from Genuki.

Yes, there is a plaque, and I would like to see it too, but it is no longer in a publicly accessible part of the building. You need to phone up and arrange a visit with the official guide. Honestly.

If you search the archives here on Rootschat, I think you will find a photo of it.

Eileen,

I re-read your original post, and realised you could not have looked at Genuki:

Baldwinson T Private 3rd Volunteer Battalion (PWO) WY Regt (Leeds Rifles) is the closest match.

Hi, thanks for your help, Thomas Claydon Baldwin was not on the plaque.
It was a longshot he had been a regular soldier in the Leinsters and retired aged 42 some years earlier living in 1890 in London. In 1901 I have not found him anywhere but finally got a death cert for him in 1915 living in Leeds on the Street next to Leeds Barracks. No-one in the family know why he ended up there it was  possible he rejoined in the Boer War. Thanks again Eileen
