Hi,
No idea where to post this, trying to locate the meaning of the surname BAMSEY and how it could also have been spelt over time to try and find out the origins.
Many thanks.

It seems to be a name almost entirely confined to Devon in 1881

Bamsey is concentrated in Devon in the 1881 Census, around Exeter/Tiverton.It is probably an English Locational Name, for a settlement. Old English personal name + sey, meaning an Island or dry ground in a marsh of a man called "Bam"
As an aside there were 452 people caled Bamsey in England & Wales in 2002.

Hi, Zeb, I've been trying to establish the origin of 'Bamsey' too (my grandfather was a Bamsey from Devon - he was very tall at 6' 5") and wondered if it orginated in Norway or Denmark. 'Bamse' apparently means 'bear' or 'burly man'. Best wishes, Maggie.

Hey guys
Stumbled upon this thread after looking through some old pages of the family...seems one of my great great grandfathers was a Bamsey and as far as I can tell also out of Devon. I’m in Queensland Australia 6’ 4” So there you go.
