Title: McInrue/McAhruie Coatbridge
Post by: sancti on Tuesday 04 March 08 08:37 GMT (UK)
I have looked at a few records on SP that look like the above names. They have been transcribed onto the SP index as above.

The 1st record was a marriage in 1884 for a Mary Ann McAhruie
The 2nd record is her brothers marriage John McInrue in 1885
The 3rd record is their fathers death John McInrue in 1907

I know they came from Ireland but dont know when or from where and I cant find any reference to the name on the census

Sancti

SP have this family that JustJean found in 1871 indexed with the same spelling:

1871   MCALUR   JOHN   M   30   BOTHWELL   /LANARK   625/01 008/01 015

...and that was searching the surname as m*c*a*r*  ::)  From the 16 entries showing in Lanarkshire, the only 'odd' surname showing on the list of McArthurs/McKellars etc. is this one:

1871   MCCARRACHER   JOHN   M   28   HIGH CHURCH   GLASGOW/LANARK   644/02 047/02 006

...which I couldn't figure out what the original would be.

The search was for a household with a John, and second name Mary*

Are you expecting them to be in Scotland by 1871?

Regards.

Monica

Monica, at first I had no idea when the family arrived from Scotland and who it consisted of. I have now managed to find a marriage record for John Mc Aroon widower who married Mary Ann Carlin widow m.s. Letimour (sp) in 1868 in Coatbridge.

I know he had at least 2 children Mary Ann and John from his 1st marriage in Ireland to Elizabeth (Bessy) Teven

They appear to have spent all their days in Coatbridge Old Monkland but the different spellings of the surname is confusing. The only 1 that I have them (1901) was found by Jean under the name McAroo.

The daughter Mary Ann married in 1884 and I have that marriage.

The son John married in 1885 and died in 1895 and I have both those records. I dont know if there were any other children from 1st or 2nd marriage or where they originated in Ireland

Isn't this so weird....I was trying to chase down the family in Bothwell by viewing a BC for wee James and in doing so definitely proved they were not the same family....but also in doing so found that the Coatbridge family had a wee James in 1869!!!

1869 MCAROON JAMES M OLD MONKLAND (MIDDLE DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/02 0268

Best wishes

I think the Patrick showing in 1871 as McAroom is probably a Carlin given that there is a Patrick Carlin b. Ireland in 1881 Coatbridge married to a Catherine, young children also born there.

Still trying to find the family in 1881/91 (and feed the brood  ::)) ~ may be a little while but will pick up once it is all quiet on the Western Front...

In the 1891 census after her marriage in 1884 Mary Ann gives her birthplace as Ireland but the 1871 census says Lanarkshire. I am hoping it is Lanarkshire as it may give the place of John's 1st marriage

Jean, that birth for James is to John and his 2nd wife Mary Ann but he is not on the 1871 census. I cant find a death for him between 1869 and 1871

Ok, for 1881, the family down as MCILROY:

John McIlroy    43, Ironwork Labr., b. Ireland
Mary Ann McIlroy 50, b. Ireland
John Carlin    24, stepson, Ironworker Roller, b. Coatbridge
Catherine Carlin 17, stepdaughter, coatbridge
William McGrorty 10, boarder, b. Coatbridge
Edward Finnigan 24, boarder
John Aitcheson    25, boarder

Address: Dundyvan Rd Browns Land, Coatbridge

Mary Ann must be away from home perhaps working?

Ok....neck is extended one more time....what about this one???

1864 MCARRL MARY F OLD MONKLAND (EASTERN DISTRICT) /LANARK 652/03 0032

Yeah I know I know the mother's maiden name seems wrong.....and on top of that I'm not finding a marriage when they say it should be.......but father is John and an Iron puddler...and mother Elizabeth....

These people love to be difficult!!

Best wishes

I'm beginning to think that Mary Ann was born in Ireland. I've looked for a death record for Bessy Teven pre 1868 when John married Mary Ann Carlin

Most likely Sancti. I haven't been able to find her in 1881 to check her birth place. You have her in 1891 showing Ireland which is the most likely.  1901 may worthwhile checking, let's hope her married name is a far sight easier to search than her maiden name  :'(  You now have John and second wife Mary Ann in 1871,1881 and 1901.  Spent a while on the 1891 last night and no joy.

Also had a look for the death of their child James that JustJean found birth details for- again couldn't see it either.  Goodness knows how that has been indexed.

Thanks for all your help folks. Next step is to visit the church in Coatbridge where the marriages took place. Surely the Irish priest at the time will have the right name recorded  ;D

A visit to the priest sounds like an excellent plan.  I would love to hear what their interpretation of the name is!!

I too have not nailed a death of wee James  ???

Best wishes

The RC records on SP have recorded the birth as

20/04/1869 02/06/1869 MCAROON JAMES - JOHN MCAROON and MARY ANN LITTIMOUR Male at  COATBRIDGE, ST PATRICK'S

The joys of genealogy. I'm still not sure which root to follow to trace them in Ireland.

Hi Sancti

Did you not get anywhere trying to check parish registers? RC parish registers may well include place of birth.

Hi my grandfather John Mc Inrue as far as I am aware went to Coatbridge with my mother Bridget and her older brother I think was John after granny died at her birth.  My mother married my father James Devlin in 1920 where they lived at Bank Street where I was born in 1935, the second youngest of a family of eight girls and one boy.  I now live in England for the past fifty three years.  The name Mc Inrue was spelt so many different ways in Ireland. Unfortunately I dont know a lot of their history but would be interested to hear from you.
it is a pity that any documents simply say Ireland but not which part.

Regards Cathie.

Not sure if anyone is still following this but I am the great-great grandson of Mary Ann McInrue and James McGovern who married in 1884, Coatbridge.

I have a copy of Mary Ann's baptism which took place in the parish of Kilquade in County Wicklow, Ireland. Her name on this was recorded as 'Maria Anna McInroe' baptised on 29th of May 1864, parents given as 'John McInroe and Elizabeth Teevan', address given as the townland of 'Knockadreet'.

I also have a civil record which seems to line up with date and place, however the name on it is recorded as 'Margaret McIlrue' and parents are recorded as 'Patrick McIlrue' and 'Eliza Tieven', address given as 'Roundwood'. So whether the civil record is for the same family, I'm not entirely sure...

Mary Ann's baptismal record in Co. Wicklow lines up with the information Mary Ann provided on the 1921 Census of Scotland, on this her birth place is also recorded as Co Wicklow.

I am also from the Mary Ann/James McGovern line.

Mary Ann had a brother Patrick who was married to Elizabeth Forrest. Patrick was killed by a train, July 1894

He was living at Bothwell Park Colliery at the time.

I also found the County Wicklow baptism for Mary Ann but couldn't find a death for Elizabeth Teevan in Ireland. I found it unusual for someone to come to Scotland from so far south in Ireland and wondered if they moved to England first and came to Scotland after Elizabeth died
