Title: McFarlane -Kincardine by Doune/in Menteith COMPLETED
Post by: valr on Saturday 01 March 08 19:24 GMT (UK)
Hello
I am stuck (as they say in p1) and I'm hoping some of you kind folks can help me!
I will try to attach a photo of my gg gran, Isabella McFarlane.
My query relates to her father Daniel McFarlane. (Confusingly referred to as Donald on Isabella's death certificate!)
Donald/Daniel was born in Perthshire. I don't know where and I don't know when!
He married Janet Dow on 6 Jan 1822 at Kincardine by Doune. Both are stated to be parishioners. Janet was born on 11 Nov 1793 in Muthill, Perthshire. In the 1814 census she is living in Wood Lane, Kincardine with her parents William Dow and Jane Anderson and 7 siblings. She died on 7 Feb 1876 at Kirk Lane, Kincardine.
Donald/Daniel and Janet had 7 children.
Jane 1824
Alexander 1826
Isabella 1828 (she of the photo!)
Janet 1830
William 1832
Daniel 1835
Margaret 1837.
I would like to find out when Donald/Daniel was born, where, and who his parents were.
The only census I can find him on is 1841. According to that he was born in 1791. I can't see any likely candidates in the IGI.
In the 1851 census his wife is stated to be a "farmers widow" which suggests he died before 1851 - but when his son William married in June 1855 he is given as the father, and he is not stated to be "deceased"!
I can't find him in the 1814 census but I remember reading somewhere that when that was taken a lot of people were away from home doing seasonal work so perhaps he was one of them and his parents were on the moss in 1814?
I have been trying to find out more info about him for a couple of years now and am at a dead end.
Any ideas, anyone?
All thoughts gratefully received!
Val

hi valr

janet mcfarlane(dow) is as you say a widow by 1851
although david/daniel mcfarlane is not deceased on his son's marriage
cert. sometimes this info. was missed out(found this myself several times)
thought that margaret mcnaughton , living with the mcfarlane's in 1841 ,
might have been his mother using her maiden name but no joy
would the original entry for his 1822 marriage include parents ?
viewable on scotlandspeople but i've never used those records before so
i'm not too sure what it would show

Thanks for looking Ev but unforunately his parents are not mentioned on the marriage doc- it just says they are both parishioners.... :(
He is variously referred to as Donald and Daniel - I have been banging my head against this brick wall for 2 years! :'(

Hi Vair from DDJJake ...

McFarlane folk interest me ... my fellow Grandad, Jim MacCallum's mother was a McFarlane of Kippen.

Yes, you have hit the 'black hole' that only gravestone searching may enlighten!

However, here are my hypotheses for you to 'chew-on' before contacting Perth Graveyard and Burial Service.

This may be a case of 'father hating' and thus, Daniel does not name a son after his probable father, James (from my hypotheses below)

Based on your report that,
Daniel and Janet had 7 children.
and on study of their NAMING PATTERN

Jane 1824 for Jane Anderson and possibly a sister of Daniel as well !

Alexander 1826** Father for Daniel possibly .... perhaps not !

Isabella 1828 ** Mother for Daniel probably  .... if not mother ...  a sister of Daniel?

Janet 1830 for Janet Dow herself

William 1832 for William Dow

Daniel 1835 for Daniel McFarlane himself

Margaret 1837  for a sister of Janet and  mother and sister of Daniel himself?

*************************************************************
After lots of searching back/forward/sideways etc.!!
I suggest, this family home for your elusive DANIEL ..

All the following were born to a James McFarlane ...no spouse listed on baptism in OPRs! [who is in fact a Margaret Kinross]

Hi Valr,

I too am looking for McFarlanes in the Dunning area of Perthshire. So as not to confuse matters i don't think they are related to yours.  Can you tell me how you got info on the 1814 census please ?

Hi Ailsa
I'm afraid the 1814 census only covers the Blair Drummond Moss area in Kincardine in Menteith.
It is available in a couple of places on the internet now I think. There is a good transcription on the Stewarts of Balquhidder website here is a link

Hi, I have a Daniel McFarlane born in 1898 in Kilmadock. His father was Daniel (Donald) McFarlane and mother was Elizabeth Murdoch. Is this any help or have you found out what you wanted to know?

Hi Val!
How great to hear from you & i think we do have a connection!!My Gran's Dad was William & she was born at the Red House in 1913 which was along the lane opposite the school - which is where my Mum Margaret went & my Gran was a cook before she retired!!! There are McCalls buried in the cemetery- Gilbert ,my Gran's brother & his wife Elizabeth & their daughter who died as a young child.Funnily enough they lived at Brightons & had lived in Polmont!! My Gran had another brother Alexander (Sandy) & a sister Jessie. The Denhams(or Denholms) were related to Gran & lived on Kirk Lane too.
My Mum is delighted to hear about you!! She is going to dig out the information she has about Gran & I'll get back to you. Speak to you soon.

Hello,
I am a descendant of Alexander E McFarland who was born in Kincardine by Doune on March 5, 1826. At the beginning of this stream you listed the children of Daniel McFarland and there is an Alexander born in 1826. My Alex may be the brother of the wonderful woman in the picture you attached. I will try to attach a picture of Alex.  I am in Omaha, Nebraska, USA. The stories which come down through families are never reliable but the story on Alexander McFarland was that he was a "ship-jumper" although we have no details on which ship or where he jumped. He married a Canadian and lit out for the frontier which then would have been in Central Iowa. His daughter, Anna Eliza McFarland, married an excommunicated Quaker named Posegate and raised a large, family. If you have any information on Alexander's early days in Scotland I would be grateful to learn more about this enigmatic ancestor.
