During my one-name study research I have found Fairbrass in Canada. I should like to know what happened to them and whether there are living descendants. Key names - Frederick John Fairbrass & Susannah Evans children Lydia M, Frederick J [wife Anna S son George F W], William Henry, Thomas, Suan. Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Farbrace - can you post where you found the Fairbrass family in Canada (dates, what records and in what provinces)? The majority of Canadian records are organized by province so it makes it easier if we can narrow down their location and start the search from there.
The Canadian census records for 1901 and 1911 are available online at www.automatedgenealogy.com. A quick search of the 1901 Census turned up a Cornelius and Louisa in Quebec in 1901. Are they of interest to you as well?
-
Hi LemonMallie, Yes Cornelius and Louisa are of interest - they are on the same branch as the others and arrived in Canada about 1893 so census info on them etc would be appreciated
Info I have:
Frederick John Fairbrass - a tailor 1851 directory for Penetanguisene Ontario - on 1870 United States Federal Census as John Fairbrass 64 wife Susanna 61 [Post Office: Jackson Roll; M593_438 page 40 image 81
1880 Census for Troy Doniphan Kansas - Family History Library Film 1254379 NA film number T9-0379 page number 575B as Frederick and Susan
Daughter Lydia M Fairbrass married 28 Feb 1851 St James on the Line Penetanhuishene Ontario to Stephen Jeffery
Son Frederick J Fairbrass listed in American Civil War Soldiers and USA Census for 1880 -1900 Michigan so looks like I may Have to try USA rather than Canada for what happened to them.
Son George F W Fairbrass in Chicago Cook Illinois in 1930 U S Federal Census.
However daughter Susan born c. 1848 Isle de Montreal Quebec
Key dates in Canada look to be 1840 -1850 so maybe not much to find but anything appreciated, Thanks.

You can view the 1901 Census record for Cornelius and Louisa here:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=90517&highlight=6
You can use the controls at the top of the page to scroll through the entire image of the census page and view all the details. It does confirm an emigration date of 1893 and his occupation looks like "Conjurer". I am sure I'm not reading that right but it made me laugh anyway. ;D
There are also a fair few Fairbrass entries in the combined databases of the Canadian Genealogy Centre. You can search for them here and view some of the records online:
http://collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html
It looks like a few were home children - if you want to investigate further there are plenty of posts and lots of info on Rootschat regarding home children in Canada.
Another quick search for the Fairbrass name on Ancestry.ca turned up a few hits in Ontario as well. I don't have a subscription nor is Ontario my area of expertise but perhaps some of the others on the board can help out. You might want to amend the post title to include Ontario just to catch their eye.
You can also search the current Canadian phone directories:

I've done the shotgun approach here but at least there are plenty of records out there to chase down!
Good luck,
Lynwen

Hi Lynwen Many thanks for all your help. Yes it does look like conjuror - he was a Metropolitan police officer in 1891 so a bit of magic must have happened!!!! I will now look at the info from the sites you have provided and no doubt will have more queries. Again thanks. John

I was at the library poking around on ancestry.ca and downloaded about 12 Fairbrass images from the Canadian records. I'm not sure if they relate directly to the people you are searching for now. But maybe they'll be useful in the future. I am always on the lookout for Mallandaines and file bits away until they fit in the bigger family tree (I just found my first Australian convict!!) so hopefully the same will apply here.
There are about 12 images in a zip file - which isn't permitted so I changed it to a txt file. Try renaming the file to fairbrass.zip and opening it. It should work but if not, pm me and I can arrange to email it to you. There are some births, marriages, border crossings, etc.
Some of the names include:
Amy Dorothy
Bessia Louisa Elizabeth
Charles (about 10 ships crew manifests on the west coast from 1928 - 32 but I only dl one, also listed as Charles F)
James
James George
Lilian Mae
Louise
Marjorie
