Can any one advise what former District of Killearnan (1841 census) became in the 1851 census.
going mad !!!!!!!!!! ??? Dof
-
Going by the index on ancestry it still seems to be Killearnan, parish no.68, county Ross and Cromarty Roll 15
Who are you looking for?
Barbara
-
Donald (Don'd) Fraser married Mary McIntosh Registered in Hillkirk OPR 1850
The entry gives Mary's parish as being Killearnan, Red Castle (Which is now Redcastle)
I went into FreeCEN Killearnan Census 1941 to try and find her parents
I found one Mary McIntosh ,a female servant aged 18which means she would be 27 when she married in 1850
However when I tried to access the 1851 ii was advised that this parish did not exist for the purposes of a census
I have failed to find either Wm's or Mary's parents in the inverness area
Any help would be great

FreeCen is still "work in progress" and Killearnan is not completed yet, so is not online. The full 1851 census for Scotland can be found on line at ScotlandsPeople or Ancestry (and elsewhere?).

I have failed to find either Wm's or Mary's parents in the inverness area
Do you mean Donald & Mary's parents? If you have the marriage cert can you give their parents' names?
Barbara
-
Sorry Barbara
It's old age, Wm. was their son Yes I meant Donald Fraser's parents and Mary McIntosh's parents As the marriage was registered in the old Parish records it does not mention the parents. Subsequent searches through the local district censuses has failed to find any ref. to their families prior to the marriage
Thanks ADP for advising that the census is not on line yet
Thanks for taking the time to worry about it Dof

There are umpteen McIntosh in Killearnan in 1851, who would I be looking for?
Barbara
-
Hopefully the parents of Mary McIntosh, Though how you would prove that they were the parents of my Mary who married at Kirkhill Inverness I don't know
Dof
-
Do you have any idea of names of any siblings that might be found with the parents perhaps?
-
Barbara,
No I don't only clue might be with the children of Wm. whose kids were May, Cathrine (Kate), Mary,William, and Elizabeth. Knowing how family names get passed down from generation to Generation. This is not an exact science. I am sure the Fraser clan would have been resident around Inverness for some time , the McIntosh may have come into the area.
ps Is there any other way of looking up census other than Scotlandspeople as its costing a fortune chasing red herrings?

I'm looking on ancestry but of course I can't see the images on there. It may be cheaper for you to look at those than the Scottish site.

Giving you what I can see 1851 Killearnan McIntoshes then maybe you can pick out which might be related and which image you want to view

Thanks Barbara, you have gone to a lot of trouble on my behalf
I will try and repay some one else when I get a bit better at this.
It is annoying when you come to a dead stop on a family line and have to look for others to assist
Thanks again Dof

The only ones I can see with a Kirkhill connection are Andrew/Ann & family.... pity the 1850 Scottish births aren't like the rest of the UK with a cert showing parents - that would have settled it :-\

I am still fairly new to Rootschat, but happened to run into the 1851 census outlined, which lists my line of McIntoshs. It is the first family listed in Redcastle. They actually lived at Revulet cottage, which apparently was built by Andrew McIntosh. My grandfather, Andrew James McIntosh, was born at Revulet cottage in Killearnan, in 1892. His father was William McIntosh, born 1836, and his grandfather would have been Andrew McIntosh, as listed in the 1851 census. Andrew McIntosh, born in 1798, was the son of John McIntosh, alias Gow, and his wife: Margaret McFarquhar. John McIntosh was born in 1753 and Margaret was born in 1757.
We are travelling to Scotland next June, 2009, and spending some time in both Muir of Ord, by Redcastle, and in the Banff area, where William McIntosh's wife (Williamina Watson) was from. In the Muir of Ord, we are staying at a B&B, where the owner's maiden name is McIntosh (although spelled MacIntosh).
I would love to be able to meet any decendents from from our McIntosh line when we are visiting. I am also interested in learning a bit more about the Gows, who apparently were blacksmiths, and assumed the McIntosh name in the mid 1700's. I would not have a clue as to how I would find out info further back from the 1700's. All my McIntosh family line appears to be based in the Black Isle, and specifically the Killearnan area. We also have some Grants in the family, as Andrew McIntosh (born 1798) married an Anne Grant, born 1803. Anne's parents were William Grant and Christian Bannatyne.
We do have a lot of info on this line of McIntosh's, although not all of the decendents from the large family of McIntosh, nor do we have info about the Gows, which would be interesting to learn.
Your prior messages have been very interesting and I thank you for putting on the info regarding the 1851 census.

Barbara,
would you happen to have the 1901 census information for Killearnan, and specifically for Revulet cottage, where my gradfather was born and raised. It would be interesting to know all of who was residing in the residence at that time. Likely the head of household would have been a William McIntosh. Thanks,
Heather

Hello Heather,
I'm not able to do an address search without a surname, don't have access to the images, and the only McIntosh/McKintosh surnames living in Killearnan don't come up with the address Revulet, sorry
Maybe someone else will be able to help
Have you had a look on scotlandspeople?
Barbara
