Title: Help with Beards
Post by: NZBeard on Tuesday 26 February 08 21:02 GMT (UK)
Hello,
Any Information on this branch of the Beards would be much appreciated thanks.

My grandfather Ralph Beard and his sister immigrated to New Zealand on the Merope.  The Merope left Gravesend on 21/6/1874 and proceeded to Plymouth. Embarked immigrants on 26 June, got to sea on the 27th.  Arriving Sunday 27/9/1874 at Lyttelton New Zealand.

From the passenger register:
Beard Ralph, 21, and Mary Jane 22, (no surname but possibly Seymour as Ralph married a Mary Jane Seymour in 1878).
Address: Gloucester.
Henry Niblett, 22, and Rose, 25 with their son William 5. (Rose was a sister of Ralph).
Address: Gloucestershire.

Mary Jane died on 19 Feb 1895.
Ralph remarried Mary Anne Hughes on 8 Jun 1898, in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Mary was from Dungannon, Ireland. Born abt 1862, father James, blacksmith and mother Elizabeth nee Hogan.

In 1861 Ralph, aged 6, was living at 1 Guinea St, Kingsholm St Mary
Also at the same address were;
Father William, approximate age 40, widower, Labourer, born at Upton, Gloucestershire.
Sister, Prudence Beard, 4, (Mother was Ann Beard who seems to have died before 1861).
Sister, Rose Beard, 14, maybe 11?
Maybe housekeeper’s daughter, Clara Clark, 10.
Maybe housekeeper, Elizabeth Clark 33.

In 1871 Ralph, aged 16, was living at Passage of Columbia Lane, St John The Baptist.
Also at the same address were;
Father William, approximate age 50, widower, Labourer, born at Upton St Leonard, Gloucestershire.
Sister, Prudence Beard, 14

I have Prudence’s birth Certificate which says she was born on 29 October 1856, father is William Beard and mother is Ann nee Hall.  Cannot find a birth certificate for Rose or Ralph.

Regards,

NZBeard

Hello and welcome to rootschat,

well after a very long search, for the family in 1851 to see if there were more clues, I eventully looked up the marriage of Henry Niblet- and Rosa Beard.
This enabled me to find the family in 1851:

HO107; Piece: 1962; Folio: 280; Page: 47

Back Terrace, Hamlet of Barton St Michael Gloucester

William Beard 36 yrs labourer b Gloucestershire
Ann 26 yrs b London
Henry 2 yrs b Gloucestershire
Rosa 4 yrs b Gloucestershire  (has been listed as 9 yrs but looks more like 4 )
plus lodgers

but I still can't find a birth for her   ::) There are two possiblities for Henry.
What a bother.

there is this possible marriage for William:
December quarter 1844 Shoreditch
possible spouses William Beard and Ann Hall.

best wishes
heywood

Hi NZ Beard, and welcome to Rootschat

I happened to see your message before it was modified, so used that information to look up a baptism for Ralph Beard at St Mark's, Kingsholm, Gloucester.

This looks like your Ralph in the baptism register:
20 Aug 1854  William Ralph, son of William and Ann Beard

If you want to order a birth certificate from the GRO the reference is
Sept qtr 1854 Gloucester Vol 6a Page 213

Also on FreeBMD you will find:
Rose Anna Beard Sept qtr 1850 Gloucester Vol 11 Page 3(5)0
The 5 is in brackets because the number isn't clear.  You can look at the scan of the entry on FreeBMD to see this.  This baptism wasn't in St Mark's PR.  The date of birth doesn't tie in with that 1851 census age, though.

Henry isn't easy, either.  There are two in Gloucester, but they are too old to match yours.
June qtr 1849 Vol 11 Page 367 or
June qtr 1850 Vol 11 Page 377

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi greymouth,
Welcome to Rootschat.
NZBeard has not been on Rootschat since 2009 and has not as you can see acknowledged all the info posted by other Rootschat members.

Hopefully he/she has not changed their email address and should get notification of your reply. Then they can contact you on here to start with.

I actually had an Uncle Bill (William Edward Arthur Beard )1913-2001, who died in Blenheim NZ. He spent most of his life that I know of in the Whangarei area.
Unfortunately due to the 100yr rule on NZ BMD I dont know his Parents names.

I hope NZBeard contacts you but if you need any help with your Beards please just ask as this is a great site for help.

Cheers,
Trish :)

Hello,
Sorry I have not been back to Rootschat for so long.  Thanks to all of the information and time members have spent researching my original post.

I have managed to get birth certificates for Rose Anna, Ralph, actually William Ralph, and Prudence.  Ralph threw me for some time as the information I had for him never noted the William.  He must have been called Ralph to differentiate him from his father who was also William.

Rose Anna born 30 August 1850 at Hucclecote. Father William and Mother Hannah, formerly Morly.

William Ralph born 25 June 1854 at what looks like 20 Columbia Street, Kings Holm. Father William and Mother Ann, formerly Hall.

Prudence born 29 October 1856 at Guinea Street, Kings Holm. Father William and Mother Anne, formerly Hall.

I would like to see what information you have Greymouth.  I have some information from Ken who is living about 40km north of me.  If I am putting 2 and 2 together correctly from your on-line name, you will be related to him and you will know what a cold Barber is.   Rootschat recommends not posting our email address on the site so am not sure how to contact you directly.  My phone number is the first one in the same book as Ken’s but with the other surname spelling.

Thanks for all the information.

Thanks for that.
Uncle Bill went to live in Blenheim with my elder Sister abt 1995.
I visited there in 2007 but did not see the grave. So it is good to have an exact date.
Looks like I will have to wait til 2013 to see if his Birth comes up on NZ BMD site.

Cheers,
Trish

Hello, wondering if NZBeard can help?  My grandfathers mother was a Rose Baird,he was born 27 december 1912 possibly christchurch definitely south island,  know nothing else about her,(she was 23 on his birth certificate, which I havent sighted yet) she didnt marry my grandfathers father Duncan Gordon Millin, and left when he was very young, he was told she had died but we know she was still alive for many years.  I see there is a rose lillian hannah beard living with kate and william beard in sydeham on 1911 electrol role, I think this is your Ralphs daughter?  Is there a possibility that she is my great grandmother?  Any suggestions would be great, regards
laurine
