Title: Mullen/Roe
Post by: Alcluith on Monday 10 January 05 11:49 GMT (UK)
I am searching for information on my wife's grandparent
Christopher Mullen and Sarah Jane Roe they married in Holyhead 5 Sept 1906 and had four sons Christopher, Albert, Gerald(Father-in law) and Joseph.
Joseph lived in the family home in Marino Green Fairview up until his death. The only other information is that Christopher's father was a Joseph Mullen.

Any information would be helpful ;D

HI,

You can nfind them in the marriage indexes available on film at your local family history centre. Find the birth entry of the child born nearest to 1911 and find the family on the census.

Following on from my previous request.

In 1911 census I have Christopher Mullen with his wife Sarah Jane and children Albert, Christy and Joseph. Gerald, my wife's father was born November that year.
Christopher was listed as coachman, which confirms what we already knew.
Christopher dies in 1915 aged 42.
Family oral history said that the woman, who both Christopher and Sarah worked for, arranged for Gerald to go  a merchant navy school in  mainland England when he was 11 year old (1922). To date we have not been able to confirm this although we have a young Gerald in the merchant navy late 1920s from his MN records.

Going back to the 1911 census we believe that the woman that employed Christopher was Margaret Paul m.s. Low who was Scottish and a widow in 1911 as head of family with her brother Alexander Low in the household.

I would be interested in finding out more about the Paul family in Dublin
anything would be appreciated.

The correct  address would be

Marino Green,
Marino Dublin 3.

The the estate was built 1926.

Try the school records :

Scoil Mhuire Marino: http://www.scoilmhuire.org/

St. Joeseph Fairview: http://www.stjosephsfairview.ie/

Class photo's were taken at the end of most years and at Communion+
Confirmation. There should be something like a class photo or something -

What are his details???

Cheers

The family lived in Drumconda up until at least 1922, when Gerry was sent to England, I am assuming that the family moved to Marino Green after that I assume after 1926.

Would there be school records for that area?

When did they start taking School photos?

regards

This was a school also that  closed down  in the  1960's - it is now a training  college for the fire bridgade. It is located beside the "CASINO". This is about

This 40 min walk from Marino. This was an  industrial school for children that
either were orphaned or parents fell on hard times, or for runnaway

By 1926 all the boys had left school and were working.
The boys would have been at school around 1914-22 the family were living on the estate of a Mrs Paul, which we believe now to be the Regent Hotel, but not certain. There was also a cottage called "Broomhill"  involved, but again that's only verbal family history.
Again Family history states that Gerry was sent to a naval School in England, arranged by Mrs Paul, when he was eleven, but we have not been able to trace him in any Naval school. From what we have been able to find out there were some schools near Liverpool but the were more correction schools for wayward boys, so maybe the story was only a cover. Anyway we have Gerry later in the 1920s on board various vessels working in the Galley and eventually he come to Scotland in the 1940 as a cook for the Americans.

Gerry passed away in 1976 but he never told his family about his live in Ireland, he did visit Dublin in 1950 but never returned. His brother Christopher, who lived in England visited once and we have visited his brother Joseph, who lived in Marino Green, I believe his wife still lives there. It was Joseph who gave us some information and we have researched the rest.

Great to see the Broomville location. Weve, driven past that several times but neve knew about it.

I believe that Mrs Margaret Paul was Margaret Low from Scotland I believe born near Aberdeen. She had something to do with the Botanic Gardens in Dublin but it has been some time since I researched her.

The area around the Regency Hotel was  known as the "GARDEN FARM".  It was landscaped by Niven (1799-1879/Scotland) Secretary of the Royal Horticulture Society of Ireland, and was curator of the "Botanic Gardens" located  about a mile away from "GARDEN FARM". Experiments were carried out in the GARDEN FARM to extract Sugar from Sugar BEET. This was ahead  of it's time as the process was not practice till about 70 years later.

The next owner was Robert Paul the Director of  "Paul &Vincent" Iron work company in Blackhall Street Dublin. The Family was from West Meath and were Presbyterian. The Paul family flourished and and they designed an Italianate Villa  on 13 Acres of land with ornamental gardens. The estate passed onto the Cuddy Family around the 1920's and they renamed it St.Annes (not to be confused with the massive Guinness Estate located in near by Clontarf).

Hi CPH

Yes I research genealogy and its strange that Gerry is one of my brick walls and him being my father in Law it does not make sense.

I spend 2 years in Dublin back in 1995,Spent a lot of time watching them film Michael Collins (stilla great movie) but at that time I did not think that I would have problems with Gerry, so only reserched earlier lines.
Unfortunately when Joe passed away so did all his knowledge, although  when visited he was having problems remembering and got a lot of things mixed up.

The results of one of my other lines of research can be seen at www.fighterboy.org.uk

Hi

The only other suggestion is that you advertise

i)   Marino Church (St Vicinet De Paul) monthly News Letter
sent out to everyone in the parish

ii)  Evening Hearld (NewsPaper)

iii) North Side Paper (Free Circular Mag)

for 1) + 3) would sent use a photo + text

for 2) just text (charge per word)

You prob best give a po box or postal address  if some one is in their  70's or
80's they wont have email.

ISBN: 978-0-9564110-0-6

If you want a complete history of the area, and you want detail and
photogrpahs, this book is a must.  It is 182 pages and has the same
dimensons as a "Shoe box" this probably to cater for an excellent
spread of photogrpahs and text. The book is well wrtiten in a factual
sense. I received the book as a present. There is 20 euro price tag on it, if
so, then it is very good price for an excellent piece of work.

http://www.dublinpeople.com/content/view/2719/56/

As the book is supported by the Heritiage Council, Government
Publications, in Molesworth Street may stock it....

what I suggest is that you write to your correspondent in Marino
Green and include your contact details. Alot of times when house
changes hands, all the old family history ends up in a skip. You will
find that people here in Ireland are very helpful and if they can help
they will.

hi

Just Google'd your the address for Marino Green. The address is for Emperor Tiling, Contractors their contact #'s are on the internet, perhaps there might
be some items left in the attic or something. I would say the house changed
hands in the last 4-8 years, as houses selling+buying was a national pastime.

Goodluck!

Thank you for that Information and the links.

I am not sure if the family had any links with the IRA certainly Gerry never talked about it and when asked he would point blank refure says therewas a lot more to it than people knew, remembering this was back in the 60s early 70s. I think he would have been to young at eleven to be invovled as would his siblings.
There was a Christy Mullen and I did a bit of research but it was not Gerry's older brother.

thanks again for the information
