Title: Melbourne Meet - 19th October 2008
Post by: little meg on Monday 25 February 08 07:46 GMT (UK)
Hi all,
don't panic, a year hasn't gone by that quick.
Lones reminded me today that we need to make a decision on dates for the interstaters, and anyone having to come a long distance, allowing plenty of time to make plans for the trip  ;D

We decided to stick with October, and on a Sunday as both seemed succesful last year.

Here are the dates for October:
5th October
12th October
19th October
26th October

There is a strong chance ;) it may be at my place again, and if we are real lucky, I could have a nice little deck at the back door. 8)
Plans in the making!!!!

Ok, so now it is up to you, let us know what dates are a definate 'NO', and we will work from there.

And I have plenty of time to work on a quiz  :P :P :P :P, separating you know who.

Well you don't have to seperate me and Doug, I think we both came last..... :-\ :-\ ;D ;D

Looking forward to it, any of the dates suit me.

I hope to see all the old friends (from last year) and meet a heap of new ones too.  :D 8) 8)

I'd really love to come......but the first two dates are not good for me....school holidays still in one state or the other, making travelling on public transport and accommodation a problem.

I'd definitely prefer one of the later dates.

Well Dee, we can't have you miss out this time around.
First in, best dressed.

We are now looking at 21st and 28th October.

Would love to finally meet you ;D

Hi Dee,
the first Sunday in October is the 7th, which is still part of school holidays here in Victoria, so I think I can safely say that we will disregard that one.

It is a good thing you are on the ball and checking school holiday times.
thanks for that  ;D
I think having the last two dates as the better option is a safe idea.

Just had our first quote come in for our deck :o :o :o :o :o
Anyone in Rootschat a builder,   ;D who lives in the sth east suburbs of Melbourne ;D ;D

I'd love to meet you, Margaret and dee!  Must see if I can find several other good reasons to spend money on an air fare to Melbourne at that time!  ;D ;D  (Need to justify it with my Scottish soul and my retired person's bank account!)

It'll be a train trip for me, Marie....I can't fly.....
And like you, I have to investigate the costs. My first priority this year is a big trip to Sydney to see my new grandchild who is due today! (First baby so could be days late!)

But I am planning on getting there at this stage. There are some family history things I'd like to do while I am there as well .......like visit Phillip Island where my gg-grandfather established the Isle of Wight Hotel, and the St Kilda Cemetery where he and his little son Freddie are buried.

Wonderful news about your grandchild about to arrive, dee!!!

If I went by train it would take forever, from Queensland!  And unfortunately I don't really have much in the way of family connections in Victoria!  Ho hum...

Shouldn't really need too many excuses to visit beautiful Melbourne!  Though if there is some decent cricket on, that will be another important factor!  ;D ;D

Seems to me that the 28th looks like being a winner.
Unless there is any major problems.

So everyone, tell your family, no weddings on that day or babies born, or getting sick  ;D

Lones, any comments on that date?

BIG apology to everyone! :-[

It appears I was looking at one of those 3 year calendars, which sits beside the computer and will now be thrown in the bin.  ::)
I have amended the dates at the top of the thread.

So now the question is:  Is the 26th of October suitable for everyone.

Very, very sorry, for not checking properly, it was only that I was putting the date onto the main calendar when I realised my error. :-[  :-[  :-[

Oh no...I thought it was me that had read the calendar wrong as I originally told Lones I couldn't make the first or last weekend but then I saw your dates so thought I'd goofed and could make the last weekend.  Consequently, this means 2nd or 3rd weekend is only good for me, but please go with the majority, don't want others missing out because of me.

Hiyah there mates.

What a great bunch of people saying they will/may travel to Melbourne!!!   8)

People I have great admiration for,  :D :D
People I respect   8) 8) and
My good mate CP ;) :-*

Yes, Oct 19 is fine for Karon and I.  It is in the diary now.  So God wiling, we will be there and maybe for a weeks leave too.  Any ideas for local accommodation, eateries etc etc.

Look out Melbourne... cos some of us New South Welsh peeps have strife with some of your right hand turns  ??? ???.    Last time I was there I created havoc of the highest magnitude at Flinders Station and held up about 8 lanes of traffic.  Lady Police person was most unimpressed but was gracious enough to halt all vehicles to let us mugs get out of the way  :-[

What I would love to see most on Phillip Island is some family history stuff....the grave of Joseph Bauer, my great grandfather's brother who is buried in the Cowes Cemetery.......and the Isle of Wight Hotel, which their father first established back in the 1870s.

The middle part of this web-page tells some of his story for those who haven't seen it.....

Hi all,
I have been thinking about ideas for the Melbourne Meet and one of my 'projects' will need your help.

What I would like from everyone is a pic of a place where your ancestors came from.  One that is of importance to your research.
It can be local ie: Australia, or, England, Scotland and Wales etc.
It can be of a village, inn, farmhouse, even the ship your ancestors came out in.
If you don't think you have a pic of the village your family came from we can do some googling. ;D

If you are coming as a couple, ie Robert and Karon  ;D, you will need to provide 2 pics based on your own family lines.

Sorry, cannot give reason for this request, hopefully it will be worth your anticipation.
If you do not have my email address to send a pic, please p.m. me for it.
I will need some time to accomplish this 'project' so please get back to me as soon as you can.  ;)

thankyou
Margaret

Hi Caz,
great photos there, think I like the Lion pub one.

My family lived opposite the White Lion pub in Kildwick Yorkshire and then one of the sons when he came to Australia opened up a pub called the white lion in Deniliquin.  It is still there - not in the family though.
So a 'Lion Pub' seems appropriate to me ::)

Thankyou for being early ;D

Hi Sadie,

Yes, the official date is the 19th October, and it will be great to meet you.

For those of you who have not yet sent me photos (of ancestors homes etc), and you know who you are  ;D ;D, please don't forget. . . . I think it will be worthwhile. ;D

It is likely to be lunchtime, as it was last year, and that seemed to work nicely.
Naturally as the time draws closer we will remind everyone and give out more details on time, place, what to bring etc.

yep, I'm counting :o

Still haven't heard back from a few that came last year, but will send them another pm when time gets closer.
Sorry you haven't been getting notification, I should have mentioned it to you, but then again ....

They start on the deck next week, yippeeeee. We have decided to pull down the old pegola too and put another in its place matching the deck/pegola.
The person who came out to do measurements said it could handle 20 people.
 ;D
i have been busy cleaning up the yard in readiness, and still had time to cook a lamb roast, and do a couple of photo restores 8)

Thankyou to all those who have sent me pics for my little project.
And for all those who haven't, hmmmm, you know who you are :-*
Remember, a pic (only) of a place your ancestors came from, be it a church, village, farm house etc.

cheers

Hi all,
just thought I should mention, if there is anyone who wants to come but have put off the thought because of a physical disability, then worry no more.

My house is set up for such problems,
 - easy access stairs with hand rail to the front.
 - hand rails for both toilets (yep two of them  ;D)
 - ramp will be built with new deck. wide enough for a wheel chair.
 - if you are in a wheel chair you can access the house via the back yard.

and I am sure many willing helpers will be at hand.
So you see, there is no excuse  ;)

Also have ducted heating and air con throughout!

Trish - please do tell about this 'Trish Dish'.

Trish,
I had not read that as a possibility at all.  To this mugs reading it would seem to have an Irish flavour to dah stew  :D ;)

But I could bring a huge black cauldron and stew you like some natives were depicted in the comics back in the 1960's  :o :o  I'm sure you would be sooo tender as to not need tooooooooooo much boiling up  Trish ::) ::)

Perhaps I should find the time for a photo restore so you can all read it straight  :-*

Hi all,
some of you may know that I recently went to a workshop called ' Writing a Non Boring Family History", which is based on a book written by Hazel Edwards.

Hazel has kindly offered to leave some books with me, in case some of those coming to the Meet might be interested in buying them.  They are reasonable priced and having read her book can verify it is worth it.

The books are:
 - Writing a non boring family history $20.
 - Non boring travel writing $20.
 - The business of writing for Young people $10.
 - How to get your book off the ground $10.

she does have other books but I chose this selection as I felt they were more apropriate to our needs.

We almost had her for a free talk but unfortunately she will be away on the 19th.

hoping this idea is to your liking.  ;D

Now Margaret,
That is good imaginative thinking, and fast thinking too.  Karon and I are so looking forward to the day in Melbourne.

I am hoping to get another roots person in to the meet and so far as I know she lives on  the east side of Melbourne.  Her Roots name is kayec, not that she is on/in roots often.  However she is my 7th cousin found via one of my Roots messages, and we are related way back to about my GGGGgrandmother.

Any way.. thank you for the updates.

That is great that you found her in Rootschat, well done!!

Great Marie,
I am sure the books will be a hit - it is inspiring to get all that documentation into some readable form ;D ;D
. . . and thats the hard part.

I have been playing with my Simpson lines and in doing so have learnt a lot about the overlanders and squatters, and to think I hated history at school.  :o

Hi again Margaret,
I did speak to, sent a PM via RootsChat and emailed KayeC on Wed 16th inst.

She can see no reason why she shouldn't or couldn't come to the meeting.  We are staying at her place so will bring her with us if she comes along.  I have given her the link to this thread and the reply # where you ask for the item for the surprise.

Thank you for keeping us up to date :)

Hi Margaret,

I'm just back from a trip to Europe which was fantastic but expensive (even got some family history done in Ireland!  ;D )  Am booked in with friends for a French immersion weekend in northern NSW in early November (that's one of my other passions!)  With the crashed sharemarket affecting retirement funds, am still trying to decide if I can afford a trip to Melbourne as well!  Sorry to be so slow deciding, but once I've fought off the jetlag I may be able to make an intelligent decision!  ;D  Would love to be there, so we'll see...

G'day again,
Little meg, as you answer Yvonne, could you also let us know what else we need to bring to help with the day please.

If you have told us before then remind us all again.  You are doing enough making your dwelling available for us all.

We are leaving Bathurst early Friday morning and hoping to make it to Melbourne in the days travel.  But.. we do have our tent in the boot if we don't make the distance in a day.

Hi Yvonne, Bob and Karon,
my computer is playing up big time, some Antivirus software has snuck in on me and blocking things and cutting out and giving me the ....... :-[

12pm is fine, and what to bring is what ever is convenient.
Finger food is the go and seemed to work last year.
Lones and I are making sandwiches which should cover the 17 people plus 1 (jodie - daughter, just can't shake her off  ;D)

BYO drinks, but tea and coffee will be provided.

Have a safe trip Bob and Karon, drive slow ;)

As a newcomer to all this and I don't drink as I have to drive what can I contribute? Some finger food?

Travelling by train so will need to bring something really portable on the genealogy stakes. Will put my thinking cap on.

Hi Robyn,
I am sure there will be a few that won't be able to drink, will have plenty of tea and coffee available, and some soft drinks too.

If it is too difficult for you to grab something re; food, don't panick I am sure there will be plenty of food to cover you.
Else grab something simple from the nearest bakery  ;)

You got the train line sorted - The Dandenong line.  If you need more info please pm me.

Robert and Karon, yes, if you have something interesting (other than a piece of redgum) please do bring it along.   But then again- I am curious, yeah go on, bring the wood with the leather attached.  We all want to know what on earth you're talking about now. ;D

cheers
