Hi Chris,
It's Carol from Ontario, Canada, still researching the BREEDS family in Sussex and Kent.(we have "spoken" before).
Whenever you have time, I would appreciate it if you could check for a George F. Breeds born c. 1875, and/or any other Breeds/Breads that you have time to list.
Two of my great uncles (Breeds) moved to South Africa in 1903 and I was told that one of them (ore a descendant) returned to England, and possibly settled at Lewes.
Thanks!

Hi Foxglove

Breed / Breeds/ Bread/ etc is a very common name here in Sussex

At one time Boykett Breed, Merchant, and family, owned half of Hastings as well as the Brewery and a Bank.

Because of this, can only look for specific people in specific places

Sorry

Hi again Chris,
Sorry I didn't make myself very clear - I am primarily interested in knowing if you have a burial for a George Breeds born about 1774-75, at any of the Lewes locations you have listed.
I wasn't sure if you had found that many in Lewes.
Thanks.

Hallo Chris,
would it be possible for you to see if you had anything on an Ann Weston, she was alive in 1828 , when her last child was born,( although she might have died as a result of that I dont know)The family moved to Lewes in 1828 and were still there in  the 1851 census. They lived in the High St, husband was a John Weston, in 1851 there was just a daughter at home, Lucy. What I'm trying to do is prove that Johns wife was an Ann!!,

Have checked South Malling Lewes Burials with the following results

1866 May   27   Weston   Rose   f   6 years 9 months   6   T.P
1869 April 7   Weston   Kate   f   4 years   4   T.P
1871 June 25   Weston   William George   m   40 years   40   T.P

Checked All Saints, Lewes - there were 19 Westons - but most of them were in the 1700's or early 1800's - so think they were possibly before what you are looking for.

Not able to check St John the Baptist in Southover at the moment.

If they were living in High Street there were two possible churches near to them - St Michaels in the High Street and St Annes without at the end of the High Street (just outside the old castle walls)
Unfortunately I do not have any info from either of these.

Hi Chris,
If you have the time, would you check for a Fanny Bacon who died between 1842 and 1851 in St.Mary in the Castle?  She would have been in her 20s or 30s.
Kind Regards

Hi Juliette

Have just checked through

Hastings, All Saints 1813 - 1853
Hastings, St Clements 1803 - 1856
Hastings, St Mary-in-the-Castle 1828 - 1857

without success I am afraid for your Fanny Bacon.

Whilst there are lots of females called Fanny, there is not one person with the surname BACON in any of the burial registers between the dates listed above.

Sorry to have to give you a negative answer.

Only wish I could have been of assistance to you.

All of the Databases in my lists of Archives that are shown at the start of the Sussex Pages have been transferred from cd or book into a second 40g hardrive on the computer and is used exclusively for Archives/Data only.

So, within minutes, if not seconds from reading your query, I am able to access the data and come back with a reply.

If I can help you in any other research in ussex - you know where to find me

Hi Mandy

Now thats a new angle

Having a data base that has the transcription of the Burial Register, Transciption and Photograph of the Headstone, plus a copy of the Death Certificate would be quite unusual.

Thanks - can you can send it as a jpg file so that I can attache it into the database.  If the others pertain to St John Sub Castro - OK

Hi Chris,

My first attempt at attaching Catherine SETFORD's death certificate failed - it was too large.  Have now reduced it to under 300k so hopefully it will appear this time.

She was born 1836 in Cuckfield and married 1862 in Ditchling as Catherine TULETT to Thomas SETFORD.  He died 1905 in East Chiltington and was buried in Barcombe.  Their children were born Cuckfield, Chailey, Newick, Plumpton, Streat and Barcombe, so they got about a bit.

Hi Again

You wrote - Next time I'm in Lewes I shall have to have a wander round the churchyard.

There are some 800 stones in the yard at St John Sub Castro, and although we have surveyed it and drawn a 100:1 scale plan - I have not as yet been able to shrink it down to a suitable size for reproduction. (Its about 5 foot x 4 foot)

As you enter the yard from the main footbath, stone 543 is approx half way down on the right hand side, (where the ground dips) just after the clump of trees over the big Cooper tombs.

(The dip in the ground, level with the Russian Monument is the extension to the old churchyard in 1864)

Would be very grateful for details of any transcriptions of Tredwell/Treadwell's to be found in Lewes (from 1840 to about 1880).  Can't be definite about which parish in Lewes though   ;)

Many thanks and keep up the good work.  Your fame has spread - I'm researching from Ireland.

Hi there Amy

Thanks for the welcome back - in some ways its nice to be back on line, in other ways its even better to be still exploring Castles in South Wales or wandering around the Roman Baths at Bath or deep underground in the Cheddar Gorge or Wookie Holes - ah well, heres to next year.

St Annes in Lewes has not been covered as yet by myself as I understand a start has been made on it by another organisation (think it is the Sussex FHS)

So unfortunately I have no info at all, except a description of the church.

Sorry to be so negative Amy

According to my database there is just one stone in Southover to the Stanfords

No 293 in St John the Baptist, Southover

Charles Stanford aged 85 - died 26th March 1895
Martha Stanford aged 96 - died 22nd November 1906

Unfortunately I do not have the full details - it is in my office at Lewes; will not be there till next Monday. (I only work one day per week on a Monday)

Is this who you were looking for

Hi Cullen

As regards your request for Simmons / Simmonds in the Lewes area

Do we have any specific name or time period that we are looking for as I seem to remember that there are a few in the various churchyards in and around Lewes

It would help narrow things down a bit

Chris,
I would be most grateful if you could look up Sellens/Sellins/Sellings in your database.  Hopefully there aren't too many.

Regards

Mark

Is there any record of a George William Hills being buried in Lewes some time during or after 1920?

It would be confirmation of my grandmothers story that her father-in-law died and was buried in that town, after disappearing from a taxi rank on Brighton seafront.

Maybe then I could begin to piece together some details of what befell him, and maybe something of who he was. Its confusing me that he may have been buried in Lewes if his family were in Brighton.

Thanks
