Title: Looking for information on Kadansky
Post by: BB2018 on Monday 10 January 05 02:02 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone,

We're trying to trace part of our family - surname of Kadansky.  Earliest record we have of a Kadansky in the UK is Albert Charles Kadansky in the 1871 census.  His origins are uncertain - in the 1871 census he is listed as from LeBoeuf, Germany.  In 1881, Copenhagen Denmark and in 1901, a polish subject so who knows where he is from!

He was a painter and paper hanger living in Hull till he died in 1918.  Also listed in numerous directories as the caretaker and assistant missionary of the Hebrew (or Foreign) Mission Room, 45 Great Thornton Street, Hull.  He married three times - 1st wife we cannot find a death certificate for.

Our great grandfather was his son and for some reason, (unknown to living family), became estranged from his father and the rest of the Kadanskys.  The mystery of this family breakup and who the Kadanskys were has spurred us on in our research.

It is both a blessing and curse that we are researching an uncommon name like Kadansky - easy to pick out our relatives on records but little to go on.

So...

* has anyone come across the surname Kadansky in their research?
* anyone got any tips on tracing AC Kadansky back to his homeland (i'm not sure Leboeuf as a place exists)?
* anyone know anything about Hebrew Mission Rooms (we think this is linked to the London Jewish Society and was an organisation to convert jews to christianity)?
* what possible answers could there be for no death certificate for his first wife - we've searched under her maiden name and as he did not move house/areas, is he really likely to have been a bigamist?

Any comments/thoughts to help us on our trail would be much appreciated.

Hej Binky & Chewy,

You have a Polish name if you change Kadansky to Kadanski. There is a problem though because the " n" should have a line above it and a Polish website might reject your enquiry if you use the wrong alphabet.

I'll see what I can find for you but please wait a couple of days for me to get back to you.

In the meantime you might like to check links from Bob in Berlin

I don't think LeBoeuf is a german name: the B could be a mis-transcription of ß, or 'scharfes S', sometimes spelled sz
but Leßoeuf or Leßöuf or Lessoeuf or Leszöuf and variations thereof aren't german names either. If you can find out any more there, I can look again.

Good luck,
Bob

Hi John

A warm welcome to RootsChat!  ;)

Your post might be better as a separate thread.  Would you like me to split it out for you?  You may get a better response.

Best wishes

in the 1871 census he is listed as from LeBoeuf, Germany.

Could LeBoeuf be a mishearing of Lebendorf?

There are 2 villages by that name in Meyers Gazetteer:

Hi all,

Just to add my 2 penn'th  ;D:

Seeing as Denmark seems to be playing a role, I was wondering if it should perhaps be Laboe? [laˈbøː]
It's up near Kiel on the Schleswig-Holstein coast, i.e. not far from Denmark. The history of Holstein (a sort of tug-of-war between Germany and Denmark) is interesting, and Laboe itself is a pretty little place with an impressive marine memorial, and a submarine on dry land. We went there a few years back.  :)

There is a very scant English WiKi site for Laboe:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laboe

but if anyone is interested in reading the German version (or copy-&-pasting it into DeepL  ;D), there is a lot more info in it:

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laboe

The history of Holstein:

@manukarik:

You never know which of these suggestions might prove helpful one day.

I was going to say that we will probably never find out, as the thread was started 18 years ago. But then I noticed that the UP was online here yesterday! So maybe we'll get an update!  :)

Hello all,

Thank you for the helpful information and suggestions on possible origins, particularly on potential place names in Germany.  Unfortunately I've not been in a position to move things on and discover any more about A C Kadansky since the original post in 2005.  I plan to get back into research mode soon - after 18yrs, i'm hoping there is a lot more online (fingers crossed esp in Europe) than when I first started looking into this.
