Title: Lewry - Marsfield
Post by: Valley on Sunday 24 February 08 13:09 GMT (UK)
Hi
I have a Alice Mary Lewry born 1867 Mother Mary no father listed on BC
In 1898 she marries Stephen Charles Smith but now she is Mary Alice married in Brighton. Stephen and mary / Alice had 3 children all born Maresfield, this much I know. My question is who was Mary Lewry parents and where did they come from as I have a peice of paper written ages ago here goes,
Sarah and George Lewery? diff spelling Aunt and uncle to mothers mother 1846 lived nr Brighton and Daughter contracted scarlet Fever from children (nursemaiding) at Crowborough. Returned home with disease and all three in family died within 14 days. Does anyone think the familys are related if so I would love some help with this.
My grandmother was Mary / Alice Lewry  and Stephen Smiths Daughter Alice Emily Louise.
Many thanks in advance

Val

I imagine that it means the child was being looked after. It could be that her parents were killed by the Scralet fever and the Markwicks looked after her as she grew up. It would be interesting to find the 1881 census info.

HO107 1111 7/20 8
Lovel Farm, Cuckfield
George Lewery, 34 LB (I presume Labourer)
Sarah Lewery, 35
James Lewery, 12
George Lewery, 10
Maria Lewery, 7
Elizabeth Lewery, 5
Sarah Lewery, 1

The 1851 census for the George and Sarah above is

HO107 1642 201 21
Brook Street, Cuckfield
George Lewry, 45 Farm Labourer born Cuckfield
and includes
Mary Lewry, daughter, 10 born Cuckfield

If this rings any bells I can give you the rest of the family.

A marriage for George and Sarah

George Lewery and Sarah Heasman
10 October 1828 at Slaugham botp by banns
Witnesses - Jn Juniper and Baraba Ayers

Now that is interesting because some of my Lewry siblings marry Junipers.

I have searched on Ancestry and these do seem to be the only George and Sarah Lewry/Lewery and they had a daughter Mary.

Do you have any more details about Mary to help pin her down?

Hi
No more details of mary only birth cert of her daughter born 1867 without father named daughter alice mary born village of Maresfield . I saw the workhouse Alice but it would only make her in her teens so let that one ride.

Hi Val

It does seem too much a coincidence to have another George Lewry married to a Sarah and had a Mary.

I will see what I can find.  Lewry seems to have been big in the Cuckfield down to Brighton area, but Mary could well ahve travelled East.

Hmm  just to confuse things totally ::)

There is a Mary Lewry born in Maresfield 1839 to Daniel Lewry and Mary Martin.  I went to the Sussex Weald site and found that.  But that doesn't explain where the names Sarah and George came from.

Of course as Daniel's grandfather was born in Keymer they could be distantly related and the Sarah and George's Mary went to Maresfield to work with distant cousins??

I can't find any other census records for Mary and presume she must have died before 1871, perhaps of Scarlet Fever.  I'll try and trace this other Mary and see if I can rule her out.

Well I don't seem to be getting very far, except my theory is that if Alice was the child of the Mary born in Maresfield, daughter of Daniel and Mary.  Daniel died in 1839 and Mary remarried a James Turner.

Now if Mary had given birth to Alice and then died of Scarlet Fever wouldn't Alice have gone to grandparents who are around for at least the 1871 census?

Anyway let me know what you think

Hi Val

I can't find a Sidney Harmer on my tree, but I am sure they are connected.  My Harmers were from Ashburnham and Dallington and before that Heathfield.  I don't have any Ponts on my tree either but I know there are loads of them around.

If I am reading it correctly Val we need to establish whether Daniel is brother to George Lewry?

Hi
I have been reading with interest your postings on these particular Lewry's.  I have them all in my Lewry/Lewery One Name Study and I will search for Mary/Alice's mother in my notes.  Do you have the marriage cert for M/A to Stephen Smith?  Coincidentally, yesterday I received full details for all Lewry/Lewery marriages in Brighton but unfortunately only up to 1880.
I have about 20 George's in my database, obviously many of them will be duplicates yet to be tied up.  Mary is much worse with almost 40 entries !

Hi Val
Is the box for fathers name on the marriage certificate blank?  Also, what is the origin of the piece of paper that you mentioned in your first post?
Yes I would like to see the scanned docs and put the marriage cert in my records if that's OK with you.
Have you looked for a baptism in the original PR's as they do occasionally give the father's name?
