Title: Bacchus 1851 please
Post by: ard on Sunday 24 February 08 03:33 GMT (UK)
Could someone please look up the following family for  me, please (our libraries are on strike!)
I think they are all of one family.
What I'd like to know especially is where the parents were born and if the age for Joseph is really 14 and not 1...
and any other details available are always welcomed!

1851 census
BACCHUS ISAAC 49 Hull, Humber
BACCHUS ANN 46 Hull, Humber
BACCHUS JOSEPH 14 Hull, Humber
BACCHUS MARIA 10 Hull, Humber
BACCHUS MARY 6 Hull, Humber
BACCHUS FREDERICK 4 Hull, Humber

Much thanks.

Hope this helps......

1851

HO107/2362/ 477/ 3
Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England
12 High St

Isaac Bacchus 49  Head Post Office Messenger
Ann Bacchus 46  Wife
Maria Bacchus 10  Daur
Mary Bacchus 6 Daur
Frederick Bacchus 4 Son
Joseph Bacchus 1/4 Son

All born Hull.

And the 1/4 alongside Joseph is as it is on the image......which would explain why someone may have read it as 14.

Yes, that is helpful, Dee, thank you. I knew there was a Joseph born in 1851 so he was maybe 1/4 of a year? At first I thought there might have been two Josephs but it just wasn't making sense!

Does anyone know if Selby is part of Hull district? In the 1881 census record, that is where Ann was recorded as being from (Both Isaac and Ann are in the 61 and 71 census but I don't have the details for them either.)

Cheers,
ard

Details do help - for one, it confirms that the Frederick Bacchus cork cutter who was a convict in 1881 was of this family!

Thanks for looking and copying, I appreciate it!

Only additions I can add for you are Kingston upon Hull, Aftass or Abtass Alley as the residence, and mariner as the occupation of Isaac.

Glad to have been of help.

Interesting, your mention of the surname Bacchus and the Wife born Selby, Yorkshire.

Added:
Various, Mariners, born at, or with their abode Selby, are listed in the Trinity House Hull, Muster Rolls.
 ---------------
At Selby, Yorkshire, there was a Public House, called the Bacchus & Barrel, Micklegate, Selby. In 1822 Samuel Coates was likely the Publican / Licensee of the Bacchus and Barrel, Selby.

Because in the Will of Elizabeth Hawdon of Selby, Yorkshire, Proved 1825 (written June 1822 and online f m p ) she mentions the Public House called the Bacchus and Barrel, Micklegate, Selby, (saying in Micklegate otherwise called Wide Street, Selby), now in the Tenure of Samuel Coates.

The Will of Eliz Hawdon also mentions a dwelling house and workshop adjoining the Pub occupied by Henry Atkinson, [possibly the Tinman, who married Ashton Bacon, at Selby, in 1791] and another dwelling house behind the Pub, occupied by Charles Turner.

Added: this newspaper snippet appeared at bottom of Marriages search ...

Hull News, 8 July 1865
Hull, July 3rd, Mr Wm Gofton, of Riverhead, Driffield, to Maria Townsley, eldest surviving daughter of Mr Isaac Bacchus, Grocer, Hull.

The name Isaac Bacchus appears in a few Yorkshire newspapers.

MAJOR EDIT
(For some reason I mistook Selby as Ann's maiden name (which didn't fit with my records) rather than the place of birth (which does) so I have removed that part)

It's been a good while since my initial post and I'm a little confused about the subsequent dates of the entries but thank you dee for the 1861 census details - I'm not sure that I had noted them.

I have that Isaac Bacchus married Ann Townsley in 1832 and that they had six children: William, Sarah Ann, Maria Townsley, Mary Elizabeth, Frederick Mamby and Joseph.

Maria Townsley Bacchus married William Grofton in 1865 and had at least 6 children. She was Isaac's eldest surviving daughter (per the marriage announcement - thanks for that Mark) but not the only daughter.

Mary Elizabeth Bacchus married my great-great grandfather, German born Ludwig Hoffman, his third wife. They first emigrated to Montreal, Quebec, Canada where their last child was born but later went to South Africa, where both Ludwig and Mary Elizabeth died in their senior years.

Cheers

Mark, thanks for your information!
Really interesting about the public house called Bacchus & Barrel in Micklegate, Selby.

From what I have been able to find, Selby is in North Yorkshire (being from across the pond, I'm not at all familiar with the intricacies of Yorkshire ridings).

While, the census information has Isaac Bacchus being born in Hull (East Riding for anyone not familiar), it doesn't mean that his family ties do not extend to Selby. Something to look into, anyway!

Nevertheless, it appears that Isaac was baptized June 15, 1803 (Holy Trinity, Hull) son of William and Mary Bacchus and that he had at least two siblings, Mary (1793) and William (1801). I have no more information on the siblings but it may even be that William was responsible for the pub in Selby, although this doesn't really fit the early dates associated with the pub being in the hands of Samuel coats. I have no idea how common the Bacchus (with its various spellings) surname was in Yorkshire.

Cheers

Samuel Coates was only confirmed as occupying at the time Elizabeth Hawdon's Will was written (in 1822). Some pubs changed Publicans often.

Selby, Yorkshire, is in the West Riding, but some records and administration come under the North Riding County and Archives.

Some Selby, Yorkshire, records are in the East Riding Archives and other Archives at Hull; Leeds and elsewhere.

Bacchus is not a common surname in England & Wales.

(So much for Wikipedia!) Thanks again for clearing some of that up for me.

I was thinking more of Bacchus in the pub's name as a family connection to Selby. I expect that the names endured longer than the publicans!
