This picture was taken in the late 1940's. Does anyone recognise anyone?
-
Hi Chatsworth. Are they in Belfast.
There is only one name for M,Nerlin in Belfast 1949.
Mary M,Nerlin, The Charlotte Confctnry 74-76 Shore Rd, T.N 46761.
Any help to you,
Anthony
PS, Hi everyone hope you are all keeping well
-
Hi Anthony,
Unfortunately it doesn't help. The only person on the photo that we know is the lady front row right, she is Doreen McNerlin. She is the dau of Daniel Campbell McNerlin bap. 4 Sep 1881 Aghadowey, and Helen Gertrude (Kyte). His father was also Daniel McNerlin and mother Margaret Barr.
I would guess that the photo depicts decendants from Daniels either brothers or sisters. If you look at entries from Ollie H we are both seeking connections of the same family.
-
Hi Chatsworth.
Is this birth any use to you ?.
Daniel, born, 13 April 1872, Bellarena, Newtown Limavady, Co., Londonderry.
Parents, Daniel McNerlin and Margaret Barr.
Regards,
Dixie

Thanks for your efforts Dixie. But that is the wrong Daniel. Ours was born on 17 Jun 1881. He was baptised on 4 Sep 1881 at Aghadowey. How ever as for the people in the picture we are unsure as to where the picture was taken. We just live in hope someone may recognise one of them. The young girl front right is the wife's mother when she went over for a visit, but she passed away in 1997. We haven't been able to establish there where abouts from her belongings. Such a shame Thanks again. Ron

Both Barr and McNerlin are names that are very frequent around Londonderry city and out to Limavady and certainly the McNerlin name seems only to appear in Londonderry records. Perhaps your family moved from there to Aghadowey area.
Also if you search rootschat for "mcnerlin" you will find other posts regarding McNerlin families.

Hi Chatsworth.
If you attach the photo to a message, the larger image may get you better results.
The Daniel I posted, like Mary, I assumed he had died.
Hope you have luck with the photo.

Hello Chatsworth,
That's a great photograph. I'm sorry I don't recognize anyone. It might be an idea to post on other websites relating to Northern Ireland as well as sending it to some local newspapers to see if they'd publish it along with a short article. The Belfast Telegraph is a daily paper covering Northern Ireland. RootsChatter Blackadder is the Editor of the Ballymena Times ... he might be able to point you to a weekly paper covering the Aghadowey area.

My grandfather was James McNerlin born in 1893 in? His brother Joseph was married to the lady M McNerlin who owned the confectioners on the Shore Road in Belfast. I'm starting to trace our family tree and currently am making enquiries re grandfather's WW1 war record as he served in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers hoping this will give us his origins. As he had no sons the name is now redundant for our branch of the family. If anyone has any info I'd be delighted to hear from them.

Liz,
Did your James McNerlin marry Elizabeth Anderson in 1913? If so I may be able to help.

Liz,
I believe this is the family you are looking for in the 1901 and 1911 census. See http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
They lived in Lewis Street, Duncairn ward in 1901 and in Keadyville Avenue, Duncairn ward in 1911.

Hi K...the quick answer is that I don't know. Both my grandfather and grandmother were married twice. I don't know the maiden or surname of his first wife. His second wife's name was Elizabeth but she came from Scotland. He seems to have travelled back and forth from Ireland to Scotland quite a bit and his family came from North Belfast, i.e. Lewis Street and then Keadyville Avenue. The family eventually lived in Jellicoe Avenue which was purpose-built housing for WW1 veterans. My great-grandfather was a boilermaker and my grandfather a plumber. My grandfather had a lot of brothers and sisters but they either died young or emigrated. Hope this is understandable and thanks for your quick reply.

Hi,
The 1911 census shows that Joseph McNerlin (sen) had been married for 23 years. There was a marriage of a Joseph McNerlin to Mary Laverty on 24 Nov 1887 in Billy Church of Ireland, Coleraine district. The fathers' names were Robert McNerlin and Moore Laverty.

Hi K - Joseph and Mary married in 1897 must be my grandparents. I'll try to investigate this further. How I wish I had asked all these questions when my grandparents were alive. This is a lot more than I knew. Thanks so much.

Hi,
I think that Joseph and Mary, married in 1887 would have been your GGrandparents and going back a generation earlier I can find the Marriage of a Moore Laverty to a Catherine Jane Mullan in Derrykeighan Church of Ireland, Ballymoney on 4 Sept 1860. The fathers' names were John Laverty and William Mullan. Children of the couple were :-
15 June 1864 Margaret registered in Dervock
14 May 1866 Elizabeth
9 May 1870 Moore registered in Dervock
11 may 1872 Isabella registered in Dervock
24 Oct 1874 William john registered in Ballydivity
30 jan 1877 Catherine Jane.
Mary was possibly born before 1864 when Civil Registration of births started.

Hi, I have an idea about at least one of these faces. Was any progress made with these original queries? Many thanks!

Hi everyone, I might be able to help. I am related to the McNerlins through a marriage, way back.... There is a Daniel McNerlin in my family tree who married Margaret Barr. When she passed away he married Elizabeth Cox. Daniel and Margaret had a son, Edward Ralph McNerlin, who married Cissy Lewis and they had a son, Edward Campbell McNerlin. I could give you more names and information if you think these are your relations. The family lived in County Down, though, not Belfast, near Seaforde.
