Hi Willy's son
Glad you found your way here :D
I think Charles Wood(s) is a bit more tricky to find than his son :(
As I said on the other thread:
I've looked for Wood/Woods in the Ulverston area in 1861. The onle couple who were having children were:
Sunderland Terrace, Ulverston
RG9/3168 Folio 14 Page 22
John Wood, 27, Butcher, b. Cumberland, Drigg
Sarah, 23, b. Lancashire, Kirkby (?)
Fanny, 7 months, b. Ulverston
There is also an interesting possibility:
?Sontergate, Ulverston
RG9/3168 Folio 76 Page 12
Betsy Wilson, wid, 51, Laundress, b. Lancs, ? Egeton cum Newland
James, s, unm, 22, shoemaker, b. Lancs, ?Greenodd
Thomas,s, unm. 20, brush maker (app), b. Lancs, Greenodd
John, s, unm, 16, clogger (ap), b. Ulverston
James C Wood, boarder, 2, b. Ulverston*
Gadget
* another one to scrap - the C is for Christopher
I followed up the Ulverston couple to check if they had a Charles later but nothing on the 1871. John was still a butcher in Ulverston and they'd had quite a few children in the 10 years but no Charles :-\
I also had a look on the 1910 and 1920 USA censuses for any clues - there are quite a lot of Charles Wood(s) born England but none of the ones that I looked at seemed to match. The Charles (plasterer) one with Catherine seemed to fit, except that they'd been married over 20 years on the 1910 :(
I'll keep looking and I hope others will as well.
He could have been born somewhere else but where? He could have changed his name ....... :(
Best regards

KarenM has found a possible in 1881.
RG11/3986/88 Page 5
Charles H. Wood age 19, painter & paper hanger, born Manchester, Lancs
He has a brother William, age 22, same occupation, same birth place , living at the same address.

That does look pretty good - well done Karen.
Now to see if they had a father , John - has anyone found anything on the 1871 yet?
Off serious searching for the weekend :D

Hi all
I have been away for a few days but once again many are stepping in and helping.
Thanks everyone for all your help.
If we are as successful as before I know he will be found.

Bringing this up for air...perhaps this should get renamed the
"Charles Wood Challenge" ;D as it surely is one... ::)

Thank you everyone for all the work you have done researching the Woods family.
My mother, Dorothy Beatrice Viola Woods was James Woods' daughter and I am his grand daughter (adopted).
We had been told that James was a "Home Child", a "Barnardo Boy" and that he had been at the "Loyal True Blue and Orange Home". How exciting to finally have some real direction!
Should anyone be interested in this branch of the family, I would be more than happy to share what information I have.

Welcome to rootschat Vgraham! This was a very involved thread, and so many of us worked on it so looooooog ago! Many of us were newbies...(no, not you, Gadget ;D) ....and Genie, bless her, now gone. I'll nudge Willy's son with a private message...Hopefully his email used to sign up back then is still active...
There is a lot more information available these days, if you have any questions of us. You can add to this thread, since it is a single page, if it is the same subject ie:this Woods family.... and I know there will be someone happy to answer your query. J.J.

I read through the entire old thread and although a sister and brother to Roger did chime in, it was only once and so I cannot private message them...How sad that you have found this so late, but I am sure other descendants will look in eventually....Not everyone is interested in genealogy and it often can be only one per family if that, so....patience...
Perhaps another Ontario rootschatter has some details/phone numbers of one of the above to share with you....although this would likely have been mentioned by now, but you never know....
all the best, J.J.

Hi J.J. and Vgraham - and welcome :)
I thought I had had some e-mails from Willy's son way back - but couldn't do a big search as I was on a slow connection. Have just found them as our lovely Genie had passed on my e-mail to him. It was back in 2008 so he might have changed it by now. I know he'd been ill as Genie kept me up to date with the happenings over there.
I'll try and e-mail him and draw his attention to this thread.
Finger's crossed that he's still using the old address.

It is wonderful that you still have the same email address and are now on...a descendant of James has replied on the previous page as username Vgraham...you can go to the bottom of this page and back to page one to see the reply, or just click on the link below this to go there as well.
Now I am once again worried, though, as I did not suggest Vgraham put up another reply, I just assumed there would be another answer and there has not been one. Hopefully with this notification, as we cannot private message as we did you.
