I am looking for any descendants of Thomas Keegan and Mary Breen who married in 1835 and lived in 18 Irish Street Enniscorthy. He ran a general dealers/pub. I know they were still there in the 1890s as he is in the trade directory. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello npl,
Welcome to RootsChat.
What denomination were Thomas and Mary? Were they members of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), Methodists or possibly Presbyterians?
You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hello Christopher,
Many thanks for your quick reply. Thomas Keegan and Mary Breen were Catholics. They were married in St Aidans Cathedral in Enniscorthy. I have the records of their childrens births, but no parents names were given when Thomas and Mary were married. I don't know how to get around this to go back any further. There was a George Keegan who was one of the Edentubber martyrs in the 1950s, but I don't know if he was a descendant of Thomas and Mary. I would love to find out.

Patrick keegan was Georges father, he was involved in the Old IRA , i am led to believe. They were was a very strong Nationalist family. Both are buried in St Marys Cemetery. George had a massive funeral so you should look up the local newspapers reports. There is a memorial at the junction of Irish Steet and Island road in memory of George I think. I would think that if you put a notice in a local paper with a contact number, you might get get some interesting information. What have you got to lose by trying that idea? In 2016 it will be 100 years since Enniscorthy came out in support of the Easter Rising see if the organisation of this celebration can help you. I think that Georges sister married a chap named Pierce Nolan. Best of luck. John Whelan formerly Island Road.

If you look up the Sinn Fein easter commeration parade in Enniscorthy , you will see the oration taking place at the grave of Pat and George Keegan. I think that Georges sister Mrs Nolan lived at Ballybuckley , Bree, co. wexford. Her obituary was in The Echo about 2 months ago. I believe some of her children still live in Ballybuckley. Regards John Whelan.

Mary Keegan and Pearse Nolan are my parents, and George Keegan is my uncle. Thomas Keegan of Irish Street is my great grandfather.
