Hi Guys,
Can someone please have a look for a couple of deaths.
Edward Earl born Cornwall approx 1823. Parents Richard Earl and Mary ??
and his wife
Louisa Earl (maiden name and parents unknown)
Had 3 daughters, Mary Louisa, Jane Coombes and Thomasine Benney (my gggrandmother) in Cornwall before immigrating to Victoria.
Edward and his wife owned a large drapers shop in Maryborough, Vic so I am assuming that they died there.
Any help much appreciated.
Also - I have all the imformation about Thomasine, but nothing on her sisters. Any information on their lives would be much appreciated.

Hi Clair
Found a possible marriage
Edward Earl Sept Quarter 1842 Stoke Damerel Devon
on the same page
Louisa Searle
Do you have death details for Thomasine Fairbank( Earl)?
Fairbank Thoamsine (as recorded) died 1888 Talbot Age 37 years
Father:Earl Edward Mother: Louisa Searl
Reg 7886
Can't see anything yet for Edward or Louisa's deaths or anything on Mary or Jane.
Did they all come to Australia - and if they did - when did they arrive?
Raylen :)
-
I have a record of Thomasine coming over in March 1866. Aged 12. I can't find anyone else.
Thanks for that maiden name - Searl. and I didn't even have their marriage date.
I do know that Thomasine and her husband Micheal died relatively young and left a child, Mary Ann to be raised by her grandparents. Dad even showed me the house they lived in, in Maryborough, so they Earls must be buried there.

It seems that there were 3 young children, Percy 9, Charles 7 and Mary Ann 4.
How sad :'(
Seems strange there doesn't seem to be any record of Edward and Louisa arriving
and no sign of their deaths in Victoria and only 12 year old Thomasina can be found.
I can't seem to see any of them on the 1861 census in England either ???
I'll keep looking

Hi Clair
As both Jane & Tomasina are with their grandparents on the 1861 census, Edward & Louisa may have died.
There is a death for a Louisa EARLE in Mar Qtr 1855 Ref: Liskeard 5C 49.
Jane appears to be a Domestic Servant in 1871 living with the Millett Family at 4 Buckingham Place Stonehouse Devon. Ref: RG10/2127 Folion: 8 Page: 8
In 1841 Census
Fore Street, Callington Cornwall (HO107/133 Folio: 39 Page: 33
Thomas SEARLE Head 50 Ag Lab born In County
Mary SEARLE Wife 45 Born in County
Louisa SEARLE Dau 17 Dressmaker Born In county
Caroline SEARLE Dau 7 Born in County
In 1851 Census
Moonsfield, Callington Cornwall (HO107/1901 Folio: 185 Page: 32)
Thomas SEARLE Head 66 Labourer Soulhill CORN
Mary SEARLE Wife 58 Lizant Corn
Catherine SEARLE Daughter 17 Callington Corn (I think this is Caroline in 1841)

The Earl families in Maryborough appear to be that of William Henry EARL & Selina ROBERTS, Henry EARL & Mary LEE and Richard EARL & Mildred HARLING-BARRETT.

Hello Clair
Have you had the opportunity to look at the shipping pages for Thomasina Earl''s arrival into Victoria on the WESTERN OCEAN in 1866
One would wonder if she travelled alone as a 12 year old (allthough she may have been a little older) or did she come out with another family?
Regards Jenn
-
Thanks for all that guys - its had shed some light, but also shed a gaping hole in what my dad told me. I was sure that Percy, Charles and Mary Ann (my gg grandmother) were raised by the Earl grandparents.
But if they in fact died in England, and Thomasine was in fact the only family member to come out - I wonder who the children were raised by.
It had to be one of the Earl family as they are quite prominent in Maryborough around then.
I have not been to the PROV office to see the transcript. With 2 little children its a bit hard.
What do you think would be my next step??? I am a bit lost.

Hi,
Yes, Raylen and Jenn, have to cheer with you about genni's work.
A chap by the name of
Maxwell Richard Harling EARL was living in Armadale and was born there in 1924. He enlisted from there for ww2.
His Next of Kin was Albert EARL.
The names RICHARD and HARLING are significant in the marriage .....
Richard EARL to Matilda HARLING -BARRET.
Armadale and Malvern are neighbouring suburbs of Melbourne.

Hi,
Hope I am not wearing out my help here, but I have digested the info, and have a couple of questions.
(1) Mary Anne Fairbank (Thomasine Earl's daughter) didn't get married until 1905, is she listed on the 1903 electrol role - she would have been 19?
(2) Still not sure who the 3 youngest lived with. Although Seline Earl lived till 1927, her husband, William Henry Earl died in 1885. That would have been before Thomasine had died (1888) and left the kids.
If Richard Earl raised them, then I have some inconsistencies with his wife. I have some pictures of their graves and it states his wife as Gerturde Elizabeth.
See attachments
(3) From the 1903 Electrol role a Edward Earl was a grocer. Can anyone with BDM access confirm that this person could have been Selina's son?
Thanks so much
Clair

Hi Clair
This Richard is William & Selina's son.
Ok, went to the SLV. Information as follows:-
"Omega" sailed from Plymouth 30th October 1853 arrived at Melbourne 17th January 1854
The Earl family excluding William & John Came on their own account to Melbourne 26th Jan - Day work was written in as well.
William & John were contracted by Mr Pearce of collingwood on the 20th Jan for 1mth wage 30 with rations
Their occupations were classed as Labourers
Family were CofE Henry(ag Lab), Mary, John & William could read & write. Georgina & Margaret could only read, the younger ones could do neither. Native place: Cornwall.
Selina Roberts sailed on the 'Clara' from liverpool on 1st Feb 1863 and arrived in Melbourne on 28th April 1863.
She was from Cornwall aged 19, could Read & write, Religion: CofE, occupation: General Servant. She was contracted by Mrs Leonard, 61 Spencer St for 20p Term 1 (don't know if this is year or mth, but probably mth, seeing she married William in 1863)
Thomasina Earl along with the Bennett family left Liverpool on "Western Ocean" 6th December 1865 Arrived in Melbourne 28th March 1866. Edward & Richard's occupations are given as Labourer. Mary A jnr & Thomasina are spinsters, Mary A snr is classed Wife.
Master: Owen Griffiths There were 5 cabin passengers & 230 1/2 steerage. Unfortunatley there isn't much detail as they came steerage and paid their own way.

Mary Ann EARL married William ROBERTS Sept QTr 1837 Liskeard (William died somewhere between 1851 & 1858)
Mary Ann ROBERTS married Edward BENNETT June Qtr 1858 (Ref: 5a Page 589)
I think in the light of overwhelming evidence I agree. So I am surmising that Selina's mother, Mary Ann Earl, was probably Thomasine's aunt (sister to Edward Earl). SO Selina and Thomasine were cousins. Must have been close for her to look after the children.
Can anyone look up the 1841 census for Callington, Cornwall to find out if MAry Ann Earl was
Found the following death entry:-
Mary Ann BENNETT died Maryborough aged 71 1891 Reg: 6954 Parents: Richard EARL & Mary GIDDIE
Checking the "Western Ocean" passenger list, entry on same page as Thomasina.
Edward BENNETT 31
Mary A BENNETT 38
Richard E BENNETT 16
Mary A BENNETT 13
I think this confirms that Mary Ann was Edward Earl's sister
Wow I think I am getting somewhere.
