Could anyone please tell me where I can find out where a plot is in the churchyard from 1855? I'm not sure who to contact.
Thanks Sue

South Ayrshire Council have a section on their Cemeteries & also a photo of St Quivox Churchyard. The link is:-

St_Quivox_Churchyard2_jpg.htm
They will probably point you in the right direction if nothing else.........& Rgds.

I have records showing some of the Monumental inscriptions of the St Quivox churchyard and a plan of the churchyard ..... although it is likely that the plan and numbering system used don't correspond to the official lair numbers I can check
-
The name is John Storrie or Storey as it is spelt on his death certificate. He was 16yrs old & it states on his death certificate on 15th February 1855 that he was buried in St Quivox Church yard as certified by John Ferguson Grave Digger.
Many Thanks
Sue
-
Sorry, no Storrie or Storie (or variants) in the lists ..... there are several lairs without headstones and for which no details were known at the time of compilation.
-
Thank you for looking anyway.
I'll perhaps get in touch with Ayrshire council as there must be some records held for burials.
Regards Sue

9 February 1855
Fatal coal pit accident - On Friday morning week an accident of a fatal nature occurred to a lad named Storrie, about 15 years of age, residing in Whitletts, at one of the pits of the Ayr colliery, known as the Black Diamond Pit. It seems that the deceased and his father worked in the same room, and, on going down the pit on Friday morning, finding the props they had previously put up had been removed by the night shift men, they, fearing the roof would fall, put in props to support it. The unfortunate deceased was told by his father to put in a third, but he did not consider it necessary, and shortly afterwards a portion of the roof fell on him, killing him instantaneously. [Ayr Advertiser quoted in Glasgow Herald Feb 19 1855]

Hello Falkryn,
When you have time could you check if there are Paton graves, also Mitchell,
Regards Margaret
Sorry I may have missed your post - there are 3 Patons mentioned
1) Janet Paton wife of James Cochrane died 1869
2) George Paton and his family (including wife Annie Mitchell) - George died 1914 , Annie in 1912
3) David Paton died 1776
-
Many thanks Falkryn,
George and Annie were my gggrandparents, was hoping to find another George who married Mary Campbell in St Quivox church in 1801 and died c1841 might have been buried there also,
Thanks again Margaret
-
Sorry no trace of any others - there are several Campbells listed but none of them show any links to your other names.
Unfortunately pre 1855 death records for St Quivox are as rare as the proverbial hens teeth (according to the local FHS they have been unable to trace any surviving records for the parish)

If you have any time, would you be able to tell me whether my great grandparents are buried there?Mary Mccracken nee Cameron,1853-1937 and Thomas Mccracken,1856-193?,and my granny,Mary cameron Mccracken Harvey,1884-1962.Thank you so much.

Looking for Brac(k)enridge family from that area. Mary Brakenridge (McLatchie) in 1851 census (Maybole) lists St Quivox as birthplace. I can't find any info on her birth, or her parents. Mary and Margaret are listed as servants in John Dick household 1841, and presuming it is she married to John McLatchie, blacksmith, in 1843, and in 1851 census with children, also Maybole. Any help on the Brackenridge line greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Gary
-
Sorry no Brackenridge or McLatchies - although there is one Margaret Breckenridge there is no obvious link with your names.
The 1821 census for the area which only lists the head of the household and their occupation has 3 McLatchie families. The same census also lists two Brackenridge families :
John a sawyer living Garden Street Wallacetown
Thomas a weaver living Content Street Content

I have a Agnes Brackenridge who was born in 1807 in Kilmarnock and died on Aug 5 1873 in Kilmarnock. She was married to a George Blackwood born on May 30 1805 in St. Quivox.

Hi, I was wondering whether you could do a check for me on St. Quivox churchyard buriels?
The individuals I'm researching are Bridget Scullion nee McShane/McCheyne died 2nd Sept 1890 and her widower John Scullion who died in a mining accident in Dalmellington on 10th Sept 1907. They were both RC, originally from Ireland, and married in the St Quivox Church, I'm wondering whether they were buried there too?
Many thanks, Gill
-
Sorry, no trace of either in the MI's list.
-
Sorry I do not have a John Scullion, but I do have a Felix Scullion (died 5 Sep,1889)who was married to Mary Ferguson. Marriage and deaths both in Urr,Kirkcudbrightshire.

Hello:
Researching Skellys from St Quivox.
Found a Luke Skelly (married 1796) and his son, Stewart Skelly. (married 1823) Stewart may have been a gardener, according to a marriage certificate. They appear to be direct descendants of my maternal grandmother. (Agnes, b. Prestwick, 1892, d. Cambuslang 1961)
Wondering how many Skellys from the same family were buried at St Quivox?
Can you help?
Thanks,
Gary

I'm surprised to hear that there are no death records for St Quivocks as I'm sure I have read some.
They may have been post 1855 but I doubt it as I was looking for a 1810ish birth. I was searching for my Greers/Griers-Gilbert Greer claims he was born there. Amongst the records which were on film at the LDS Family History Centre in Hyde Park were many many death records. They were extensive including cause of death-chin cough comes to mind & a very detailed description of two or three"unknowns" who were buried at the expense of the Parish-I'm sure they were hoping to recover the costs if a relative came forward later.
I had never seen such detailed records before & the handwriting was clear & very legible.
I am 99% it was St Quivocks although I never found any Greers/Griers amongst them.

According to the local Family History Group there are no known burial records in the Old Parish Registers for St Quivox.
Unfortunately this state of affairs was not unusual with regard to deaths which are poorly recorded in many places.
