Jamie,
Sorry but I doubt there are any connections between our Lees families. Mine only moved to Fife in the 1870s before which they lived in Midlothian.
Cheers

BETT/BEAT (1680s-1770s) - Crail, Aberdour, Dunfermline (John married Isabell Norrie 1709)
I have a Margaret Beat(t) or Bett who married William Malcolm, 25 May 1798 in Abbotshall. No more information than that, unfortunately.
Sorry but I doubt there are any connections between our Lees families. Mine only moved to Fife in the 1870s before which they lived in Midlothian.
I have Lees from East/Midlothian as well. John Lees married Elizabeth White 20 Sep 1794 in Whittinghame, had at least five children:
Elizabeth b1796
Archibald b c1797
Isabel b1799
Agnes b1801
Jane Hastie b1806
Archibald Lees married Janet Dudgeon 17 Mar 1827 in Gladsmuir, and Margaret Ritchie in Prestonpans 16 May 1856. They had at least ten children:
John, Adam, Peter, Elizabeth, John, Euphemia, Margaret, Archibald, James and Agnes Dudgeon.
Euphemia Lees married Andrew Sanderson 18 Jun 1862 in Edinburgh Parish. They were my great(x3) grandparents.

Interesting. I have an Elizabeth WHITE who married a David LEES b. 1830. Date and location of marriage unknown at the moment.
He was son of Robert LEES and Margaret COWAN. Robert was born in Dunfermline Fife in 1784.
Robert's parents were David LEES and Marion/Mary HAY, who had 10 children including Robert. The majority born in Dunfermline, Fife.
Do you know who your John LEES' m. 1794 parents were? Where is Whittinghame I am not familiar with it.

Hi Jamie,
A Google for:
GENUKI + whittinghame
finds
http://www.clerkington.plus.com/GENUKI/ELN/Whittinghame/index.html
This has a brief and a lengthy description of the parish (and the village), a map of where the parish is within East Lothian/Haddingtonshire, and a link to a modern day map.
Regards,
JAP
-
Thanks. Difficult to get my head around the areas... as they seem so close to other areas. Anywhoo, close to Dunbar?
Jamie
-
Again, Google is your friend. :)
From the previous search, I find that East Linton is probably the nearest present day village/town to where Whittinghame village was (according to GENUKI). Looking on a modern day map site (e.g. streetmap uk, multimap) for Dunbar, I see that Dunbar is about 10km ENE of East Linton.
And zooming out on the map, I see that Dunbar is some 50km or so from Dunfermline, Fife (as the crow flies westwards from Dunbar across the Firth of Forth).

Again, I understand maps and Google. Nice to discuss with someone who is from there to get an idea of distance from their perspective. When you live in a country where it takes a week or more to drive from one end to another, difficult to wrap your head around short distances.
Thanks for you help.

Hi Jamie,
Hate to tell you but I am Australian. All my ancestors arrived here between (as far as I know) 1841 and ca 1890.
Depending on how much of a lead foot one is, it takes a pretty long time to drive from one side of Aus to the other. ;D Especially observing present day speed limits. >:(
Best of luck with the genealogy.
Regards,
JAP
PS: Have to admit that I've driven in many countries including Scotland and Canada. :D
-
Well Jap didn't mean to discuss with you necessarily, thought someone else might lead the conversation, someone who has done the driving in Scotland.
Anywhoooo
Jamie

???
Incidentally, re your post at reply #3.
My understanding is that Bo'ness was in the county of Linlithgow/West Lothian.
I wish you well in your future research,
JAP

BETT/BEAT (1680s-1770s) - Crail, Aberdour, Dunfermline (John married Isabell Norrie 1709)
The furthest back I have been able to track so far is that I have a John Beat (b.1806) from Kingsbarns who later married a Janet Thomson in 1827.

Adrian - I have a John Taylor marrying a Helen Fife/Fyfe in 1784. Their daughter is Mary, christened 1785 Dysart. Mary went on to marry Lawrence Lennie in 1807 (Edinburgh) and are my 3xg grandparents.
I know Taylor is a common name (coincidentally my surname today) but thought I would throw it out there anyway.

I have in my tree a Christen Kinnell born Kinghorn, Fife 1708 to James Kinnell and Elsbeth Beatsone. She was mt great grandmother x5.
In 1730 she married James Gray and their son Robert was born in Kinghorn in 1737.
Robert married Kathrine Moffat and their son David was born in 1769. He married Elizabeth Darney and they had a son Robert born 1797.
Robert's second marriage was to Henrietta Paterson of Aberdour in 1841 in Burntisland. My great grandmother Maggie was the last of their children born in Burntisland in 1851.

I hope there are people who are reading this forum. My parents were James and Martha Currie (nee McDonagh) who emigrated to the US in 1949. They and the rest of my family lived in Methil and Buckhaven. I'm trying without the aid of documents to go back a few more generations. To the best of my knowledge, my father's parents were Patrick(?) and Elizabeth (Forbes) and my mother's parents were Michael McDonagh and Mary (Anderson?). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying without the aid of documents to go back a few more generations.
You should be able to find all the documents you need at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
James Currie and Martha McDonach were married in Buckhaven in 1937. You can download a copy of the marriage certificate, which will tell you their ages when they married and the full names of their parents including their mothers' maiden surnames.
Then you can work back from there.
