Hi everyone,
We have recently been undertaking historical research into the surname of Kadansky. We have traced an Albert Charles Kadansky as living and working in Hull from around 1871 until 1919. He appears to be of Eastern European origin, various census’ listing him as German or Polish or maybe even Danish. We are not sure which though which is a bit problematic for further research!
We have found that in a number of local directories of Hull in the 19th century, he is listed as an assistant missionary and caretaker of a Hebrew Mission Hall, situated at 45 Great Thornton Street, Hull. We have tried to find further references to this institution on the net and by email with Hull CC archives but have not found anything concrete.
Does anyone know what the Hebrew Mission Hall would have been – which denomination is it? Does any specific information or records relating to this Mission Hall exist and/or could anyone recommend any resources which could give us more background on the organisation Albert Kadansky worked with?
Any little snippets of information however small would be of great help with this giant jigsaw puzzle!
Thanks,
Binky and Chewy

Hi Binky and Chewy! ;)
Welcome to RootsChat.
Presumably a Hebrew Mission Hall would be Jewish. The Yorkshire BMD site http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/marrcov.html lists various churches etc. that they have indexed. One of these is Thornton Hall (Great Thornton Street) and another is Great Thornton Street Chapel.
The website http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/Hull/HullHistory/HullHistory9.html has several mentions of Great Thornton Street but mainly refers to the Methodist Chapel there I think.
Best wishes

Thanks for the prompt replies! Much appreciated.
We too had thought that maybe this was a Jewish institution however understand that it is unlikely to be Jewish for Jews but rather Christian mission to convert the influx of immigrant Jews. Apparently the word 'mission' is key as Jewish institutions would not be called this.
The Kelly's directory of Hull for 1899 lists the Hebrew Missions Room as being in conjunction with the LJS (not completely sure what this stands for - maybe London Jewish Society) and states the Revd Krunig as visiting cleric. Again this does indicate that maybe this is not a Jewish organisation......unless someone knows otherwise!
Sorry not to put this information in the original post.

Hello Binky & Chewy,
The mission in question is a Wesleyan chapel.
It was built in 1842 and could seat up to 1,400 people. Sadly, it was destroyed by fire in 1907.
However, it was replaced by Thornton Hall.
I have a picture of both buildings if you are interested.

Hi Kooly,
It was on Great Thornton Street. I believe also that it was very near Porter Street.

Hi Kooly,
Porter Street is somewhat near Paragon Station, isn't it? I'm sorry, my geography of Hull isn't that good. I'm more of a recognising streets and roads by what landmarks/buildings are there.

Hello Binky & Chewy,
I have further information regarding the chapels near Great Thornton Street.
There were also two Lutheran churches very close to Great Thornton Street; one German, the other Danish.
I thought that you may find this information intriguing, since you stated that your ancestor could have been of German or Danish descent.
Best wishes,

Thank you for your helpful information and insights. I've not been in a position to move my research forward since 2005 - hopefully back on it soon. I did visit Hull for the first time last year and stood where the chapel would have been on Great Thornton Street - all modern housing now.
