Title: Micheal HOUSEAL and Anna Maria BOOTE
Post by: Kiwi Girl on Tuesday 19 February 08 21:21 GMT (UK)
Hi there,

Anna was Michael's 3rd wife.  She was born about 1772 in Marylebone, London.  her father was Rev. Daniel Boote who lived  in Portman Street,  Portman Square, London.

I think they had 3 children William James Boote Houseal, Sybilla Houseal, & Michael Daniel Houseal.

I have information on Michael Houseal's ancestry but nothing further on Anna's.

I am also particularly interested in Michael Daniel Houseal's birth details.

Any help would be fantastic!

:)

Have you checked the IGI? www.familysearch.org

Anna's birth & baptism dates are there, father Daniel, mother Ann, plus two brothers births & baptisms, William Rowland 1774 and Daniel 1777
and Daniel's marriage to Ann Brown 1771
possible baptism for Daniel 1758 parents John Boote and Ruth
probably lots more, that was just a quick look

Hi Riwia,

Yesterday I found a reference to the English estates of American Settlers: American Wills and Administrations in the Preogative Court of Canterbury 1800-1858 by Peter Wilson Coldham.

It reads thus

Thomson, Ann, of New Jersey, widow, Administration to daughter Anna Maria, wife of Michael Honseal (sic) (Apr. 1801).

I'm reasonably sure it's Michael and Anna Maria Houseal that is referred to.

There was also a little reference in a book called Valentine's manula of Old New York

Mrs Jane Houseal, wife of Michael Houseal, Captain in his Britannic Majesty's service, died on Saturday last at Bedford LI (Long Island?) in the 24th year of her age. (poss January 1798?)

Actually I think Michael's children are

1. Bernard Houseal (mother Mary Shand Houseal) listed on the passenger list for the HMS Clinton and his christening recorded in New York on IGI. Possibly died young in Nova Scotia?
2. Edward William Wilbraham Griffith Houseal (possibly the child of second wife?). There is a marriage to Mary Christie in Paris at the British Embassy Chapel on IGI Subsequent marriage (2x) to Maria on Freebmd. He is the one that ran the school for protestant young men in Paris. Belle Thompson says that family history has it that Edward Lane went to school in Paris and I'm assuming that he went to the one run by his cousin?. This man is also one of the witnesses to George Dawkins Lane's second marriage to Jane Williams.
3. Sybilla Houseal - no record of birth but died of consumption at her brother EWWG Houseal's establishment in Paris according to the death notice in 1824 I think.
4. George Houseal was murdered in Rome 1837, definitely a brother of EWWG Houseal because he wrote an obituary.

I'm not sure about WJB Houseal and Michael Daniel except of course we know Michael Daniel existed.

There is also an interesting group of Honseals on New York censuses who were born in France. I'm sure they are connected but not sure how just yet. Maybe they are children of EWWG Houseal since one is Edward Honseal. Maybe I need to order EWWG Houseal's death certificate just to see if he had any children?

In a book called something like The Private Journal of Aaron Burr during his Four Years in Exile ?? there is a reference to a Michael Howseal German translator. At one stage he says "Home to receive Howseal, who was to call with some of his children. He came at four, and brought m'lle., who is very pretty and genteel and three boys. We had a little repast of peaches and grapes, bread, butter, cheese and wine, which cost three livres, and a nosegay for m'lle. Stayed till five".

I'm reasonably sure he is talking about Michael Houseal tho it is only a feeling.

Anyway, it's all just more needles in the haystack of Housealsbut it adds to the picture :)

Just checked the Ann Thomson thing. There is a marriage of Ann Boote to Benjamin Thomson at St Clement Dane in Sept 1786 so it seems reasonably sure to be Anna Maria Boote Houseal's mother.

Anna Marie was the daughter of Rev. Daniel Boote.  She had two brothers, William Rowland and Daniel.  I don't know what happened to Daniel.  William Rowland Boote came to the states in 1796 and joined the army.  Many articles about him.  He became a colonel.  He married Sarah Stewart Russell.  One of his children he named after his sister, Anna Maria.  Rev. Boote died and his wife remarried a Thompson.  I have a copy of his will which mentions Anna Maria.  One of Anna's children was killed in a riot in Europe.  The list of administration of wills that mentioned Ann Thompson was Anna's mother.  I have not been able to get a copy.  I have often wondered what happened to Daniel.  I have also wondered where Rev. Boote was buried since he was a minister.  Oh well, if you need more information on this let me know.

Does anyone know how we can get a copy of the administration of Ann Thompson's will.  Not sure how to get from the Cantebury Cts.

It may be available from the National Archives at Kew. I can't find any reference to that specific collection though  ???

They do have a copy of Peter Wilson Coldham's book that is referred to above.

Hi Suelkin,

I've only just read your replies and was pleased to see your reference to one of the sons of Anna being killed in a riot in Europe. It was actually in Rome and George is buried in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome. There are newspaper reports available and also EWWG Houeseal's obituary for his brother.

Hi Sue

Sorry about the delay in replying to you, somehow I missed your reply

I did have copies but they are on the hard drive of a slightly dead computer. I know I got them from British newspapers on line and I will try and get them again.

Can I ask what your connection to the Houseals is?

Thanks

Hilary

Up for auction was a letter from Rev Daniel Boote to William Henry Cavendish Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland

29.6.1772                   Letter from Rev. Daniel Boote, Portman Street,  Portman Square, London, to [W.H.C. Cavendish-Bentinck] 3rd Duke of Portland; 29 June 1772, Discusses arrangements for the ownership and patronage of the chapel [presumably at Lisson Grove], mentioning Mr Bliss's involvement. 2 ff

17.6.1772                   Letter from Mr Thomas Bliss to [W.H.C.  Cavendish-Bentinck] 3rd Duke of Portland; 17 June 1772
Refers to Rev. Harley's informing the duke of a new church at Lisson Green 'which it was worthy Your Grace's Purchasing'; expresses the wish for the duke to own it rather than 'that it should fall  into the hands of Dissenters, who have already made application to me on that head and offered very  advantageous terms'.

I had Daniel Boote's wife as Ann Brown but I have no dates for either Daniel or Ann.

Cheers,

 :D
