I am trying to find out about the ARIES family from Kidlington.
I have worked out that John ARIES was born about 1793 as his death
certificate states he died in 1843 in Kidlington aged 50 years.
He is described as a Blacksmith and a Publican
His wife Elizabeth (nee HINTON) died aged 91years in 1884. Elizabeth opened
and ran The Britannia Inn in Thrupp until she died aged about 91.
I wonder if John ARIES publican is related to Thomas ARIS who is recorded in
the Assizes as being a publican in Kidlington in 1755.
I would be grateful to anyone who knows anything about the Britannia Inn in
Thrupp or the ARIES , ARIS families.

Thank you for your welcome and of course the information. I'll need to check the parish registers to see if there are any other Aris or Aries at the same time. If not this looks like a good bet that this is the family. Fantastic.
Thanks again

Hello Trevtherev
The John Aris you describe is the brother of my greatgrandmother(x4) Amy Aris(Aries). Edward was his grandfather. I am doing research on my Mother's Line (Batts). Amy marrird Joseph Batts a Boatman from Kidlington who live near the Pub John ran with his wife. There is an interesting Newspaper article involving the Batts and Aris family in the Oxford Journal in the 1840's.
Kind regards

Thanks for your reply. Is the article about the drowning of the 2 boys when Mrs Aries failed to help? If so do you know who Emma Batts was the daughter of the constable who gave evidence?
Trevor

Hello Trevor
Yes that's the article, Emma was my great(x3)Aunt, daughter of Joseph Batts who was Constable of Thrupp as well as a coal merchant, and had a brewery on the canal at Thrupp. It's a sad article, the boys' father died a couple of weeks later from consumption. Are you related to the Aris/Aries family? I am looking at the Aris/Aries line at the moment but don't have a lot of in-depth Information. Edward Aris was my greatgrandfather(x6).
Kind regards Roy

Very interesting about the relationship between Emma and the Aries family especially as she gave evidence at the inquest. I have the family tree back to 1590 on the Aries side. John Aries daughter was my wife's Great Grandmother x3.

John Aries b 1769 m Hannah Beesley
John Aries b 1741 d 1783 m Elizabeth Hinton
Edward Aries b about 1707 d 1787 m Rachel Moulder
Willian Aris b 1679 m Elizabeth Barnes
Edward Aris b 1647 m Ann Bates

Anything we can share would be good.

I wonder if you could tell me the relationship between Emma Batts, the informant at the inquest and Amy Batts nee Aries the sister of John Aries.

Hello Trevor
Emma Batts was Amy Aries's youngest daughter, she married an Urban Francis Harriss a Tailor from Kidlington. Thanks for your Information on the Aris Line. I have been looking at Parish records and have had difficulty find the links between the Aries family. There are three People named Edward Aris buried in Kidlington in 1766, 1774 and 1787. Did you trace the line back through Parish Records or was it general family knowledge. Which line is your wife related to? is it the Shaylers' through Emma Aries or Deeleys' through Sophia Aries? I think John Aries (1741-1783) married twice, his first wife Elizabeth Scaresbrook died in March 1773 and he then remarried Sarah Hyatt in November the same year.

Hi Roy,
I got a lot of help from a fellow researcher through the Oxfordshire roots chat site who pointed me in the right direction. If you look on Oxfordshire rootsweb and go to archives and search for Aries you wuill see some of my correspondance. Two people, Dave and Wendy, helped me out with the dates going back. We also confirmed that John married Sarah after Elizabeth died. The transcripts of the parish records I checked as far as I remember.
We went to the Britannia pub and took pictures of the fateful canal. My wife's line is through Amey Aries' neice Catherine Aries daughter of John and Elizabeth. Catherine married twice, both husbands were drowned ( thankfully only one in her lifetime otherwise questions would be asked.) I will try and attach a photograph of her. (whoops site won't let me as it is too large)
Kind regards

Hello Trevor
I have been looking at the Parish Records. I see Catherine Aries was born in 1820, but i can't find any record of her marriage. Was she married in Kidlington or a different Parish?

Hi Roy,
Catherine Aries’ first marriage was to George Wing (shoemaker). They were married in St Pancras Church in London on November 23rd 1842. George Joseph Wing drowned. The Oxford Journal tells the sorry tale of a drowning in the River Cherwell in Oxfordshire, and must have reminded Catherine of her own mother’s controversial involvement with a drowning in her home village of Thrupp five years earlier. Little did Catherine know that her second husband George would also suffer the same fate in London less than 30 years later. George Wing and catherine had two children , (John) Walter Wing born 1845 in Bow and Frederick Wing on 3rd November 1846 at 5 Three Colt Court, in Shoreditch.
In 1851 the family resided in Summertown and Catherine is a housekeeper. By 1853 there was an addition to the family in Summertown St Giles, Oxfordshire, Catherine Elizabeth Wing was born, father unknown. Her second marriage to my ancestor George Pearson was in St Paul’s Church in Oxford on Dec 2nd 1852 in the presence of Catherine’s brother, James Aries and sister, Sophia Aries. George and Catherine lived in Oxford City for a few years and George continued as a railway porter on the newly established railway line. Whilst in Oxford they had a child of their own, George Augustus James Pearson. It seems that George was tempted by a position close to Catherine’s family. Before 1860, the Pearson family move to just up the canal from the old Britannia Inn to a small village called Aynho near Deddington.
The family decide to have George junior baptised alongside their new addition to the family Charlotte Louisa a small baby in 1859 as they settled in Aynho.Elizabeth Aries was in Thrupp just six hours by boat along the canal from Aynho. George resigned from the railway at the request of his builder brother and came to London, took an inn near the docks, spare time supervising the ballast being brought in for his brother. That was a sorry day for the family , the children soon became orphans.
In 1872 Catherine fell ill and succumbed to a bout of fever and congestion of the lungs. Catherine’s mother, Elizabeth Aries travelled from the Britannia in the small village of Thrupp to be with her daughter but even her care and support could not save Catherine from the inevitable. On 26th October 1872, at 1 Shirley Street, just a month after starting up the public house, Catherine’s life slipped away, her mother with her at the end. Catherine was just 50 years of age had been married to George Pearson for 17 years. They had moved from Oxford to Northampton to London.
George’s fortunes had been mixed as a railway porter, station master, beerhouse keeper and now, as Catherine’s death certificate showed, a labourer in the shipyard and it was the Docks that would claim George’s life nearly 4 years to the day after Catherine’s death, leaving the children destitute and alone.
on Monday 9th October 1876 George Pearson was found dead next or near India Dock & Tavern.
He was 41 years old and his occupation described as an Innkeeper. The cause of death was determined by John Humprhreys the famous coroner for Middlesex who registered the death after the inquest on 11th October. The conclusion was that George had died violently having been suffocated by drowning with the added haunting phrase, “How not proven!” George was buried in West Ham cemetery 17th October 1876. In 1876, clutching her belongings, the youngest child Martha left London leaving her brothers and sisters, as well as her half brothers and sisters and travelled all the way from London to the small market town of Holt where her father had been born having lost her parents tragically within four years of each other. There she met John Lake and married him. Their son Reginald Michael Lake was my wife's grandfather.
I hope that helps. If you have anything I could add to the family tree I would be grateful. I have written a substantial history of the Aries, Pearson and Lakes and would be happy to send a disk with the relevant chapters ( you wouldn't want to read all the other bits not connected to your family)
Kind regards

Hello Trevor
Thanks for the information, it is most interesting and sad. Catherine was witness at her brother James Wedding to Sarah Shayler in Oxford. James moved to Minnesota and had a large family there. The father of the two boys who drowned in the canal died from consumption within a week. Also as you know Elizabeth's husband John Aries died a couple of weeks later. The mother of the drowned boys gave birth to a son called Thomas who later would marry, his wife having twins, its a tragic story all round. iI will be uploading my updated tree onto GenesReunited soon and you can use any information off it you wish. It would be good to listen to your CD, i'm very interested as i'm developing the Aries line in my own tree at the moment.
Kind regards Roy

Hello Trevor
I Hope you are well. I have been doing some research into the Airis/Aris/Aries in Parish records in Oxfordshire. You probably already know this, but i found three Edward Aris's all baptised in 1707!! (all in parishes close to Kidlington). Is the Edward (from Bodicote) you have in you line going back to 1590 definitely the correct one? I hope i'm not being too pushy, but i'm just trying to verify the correct line. Thanks for your time.
Kind regards Roy

Hi Roy,
Never can be completely sure but hope so.
