I am trying to trace Stephen Calverley in the 1841 census. Old family notes say he was born 5 March 1820 in Yorkshire to parents Stephen Calverley (born c.1785 in Whitewell, Yorkshire) and Mary (nee Wilson born c.1789 also in Whitewell, Yorkshire).
There is no record in the IGI of Stephen's birth in Yorkshire. However, the IGI does show a Stephen Calverley, parents Stephen and Mary Calverley, christened in Tatham Fells 9 April 1820. IGI also records what appears to be two siblings, John 31 March 1816 and Thomas 29 June 1823 both christened in Tatham Fells. One possibility is that Stephen was born in Yorkshire and christened in Lancashire?
Stephen Calverley married Ann Slinger in 1844 in Slaidburn Parish Church and they left for America in 1848.
Grateful for any help with Stephen and his family in 1841.

Hi
Old family notes say he was born 5 March 1820 in Yorkshire to parents Stephen Calverley
Does his marriage cert confirm his fathers name as Stephen?
-
You may want to check out the 1880 US census which is available free on www.familysearch.org as Stephen & Ann are on it

Hi,
Firstly after a bit of tracking I think the one in Tatham could be the correct family, although at first glance I thought against it. By the way. there are only two Stephen Calverleys on the 1841 census and I am also fairly sure that the one in Whitewell is your Stephen. The other one is still in the same area on the 1851 census.
Now, as you already know, his father Stephen Calverley married Mary Wilson at Waddington on 29th October 1807. He was from Waddington and she was from the parish of Mitton(keep this in mind). Both signed and the witnesses were Ralph Earnshaw and William Blackburn
Baptisms in Waddington:
18th September, 1808 Ann daughter of Steven Calverley of Waddington
11th Februrary, 1810 JAMES son of Steven and Mary Calverley of Waddington
5th April, 1812 Margaret daughter of Steven Calverley of Waddington
James Calverley born WADDINGTON aged 41 turns up on the 1851 census as a farmer of 118 acres at Oxenforth Green, TATHAM. He is also at the same address in the 1841. Possible mother Mary, Farmer of 48 Acres is only a few folios away and born in what really looks like Balshaweaves but I bet it is a pronunciation error at the time and the fact that there was a "Balshaw" in Tatham. My money is on Bashall Eaves just above Mitton. ;D
Hope this helps,
Mo
P.S,. Yonderpeasant - that dog looks decidedly Wheatie ;D Am I right?

Thanks everyone for all your help and the information found.
In addition to the three Waddington baptisms the IGI appears to record a fourth, Lucy Calversley (sic) baptised 16 January 1814, father Stephen, mother not shown. I think this Lucy married Richard Downham in Slaidburn in 1833. 1851 adds weight to my belief that the family moved from a white to a red rose county.
I have Ann Slinger in 1841 and have seen the 1880 US Census. Through Google I also found some biographical sketches of the Calverley family and Slinger family - some of Ann Slinger's siblings also left England for America.
Mo - curious to know record source (parish records?)of witness names from an 1807 marriage?

Hi Gerry,
The parish records are actually on Ancestry (up to 1812 thats why I missed Lucy) under "Parish and Probate Records" Yorkshire. I just typed in Stephen Calverley and looked at what came up. It even gives the Officig (sic) Minister as Robt. Smith.

Mo

Hi there! I know this is an old thread but I've been doing a lot of background research on my family and I am a direct descendant of your inquiry Stephen Calverley and I have some information on him and wanted to know if you needed any more. Also, if you know anything beyond the 1785 Stephen Calverley (Grandfather of your inquiry) I would be very appreciative to hear it!!

Hello alarksnest
Welcome to Rootchat and I hope you enjoy using this forum.
My interest is really with the Slinger family but I became involved in correspondence with a descendant of Stephen Calverley who lives in Wisconsin USA. My posting on this forum was to do a little research for him and he would be your best source for Calverley history.
I found nothing on the Calverley family before Stephen born c.1785.
I will send you a PM about contact details.
Regards
Gerry

Hi all! My name is Sean and I am an American descendant of Stephen Calverley and Ann Slinger's daughter Mary Wilson Calverley. She was my great grandmother. I have been in correspondence with Gerry, mostly regarding my Slinger ancestors.
