Title: SELLERS family - Colyton 1871 please
Post by: SCH2 on Sunday 17 February 08 18:09 GMT (UK)
Hi there,

I am looking for the Sellers family of Colyton.
John Paris Sellers was born 15th December 1861 according to his naval records.

There is also a Walter Sellers born Colyton 19th Nov 1855 and I am wondering whether they were brothers as the name Walter continued further down (or is it up?) the family line - I had a great Uncle by that name.

I am also wondering whether I can find out where the name Paris came from - a female member of the earlier family's maiden name perhaps? John's BMD entry has been transcribed as Farris!

Many thanks
Sue

Hi Mum 44

I think it's the timing that determines the red warning (not too sure though) and we were approx 3 minutes apart.

Hi Sue

SARAH Sellers would be around 60 in 1871 and there was no son George on the 1861 census - do you have the correct family?

Nice work Tazzie, i was hoping they were the same family.

Wonder if we can find out about the George.

I'm sure they are - it's unlikely that the 11 year old son of a druggist would be working as a servant

If you check the replies above - there is no son George on the 1861 census and you will see Sarah was 42 in 1861 and 50 in 1871 - it's therefore unlikely she would be 53 in 1871

Thank you so much for all your hard work Tazzie.

Do you know whether James was living next door to the Parris family in 1841 as well? I was thinking that Emily may have been a Parris before her marriage! :-\

And this one!!!!

Marriages Sep 1839

Du Chemin  Emma    Exeter  10 103
Goodridge  William Newton     Exeter  10 103
Parris  Sophia Sarah     Exeter  10 103
Pates  William     Exeter  10 103
Thomas  Elizabeth     Exeter  10 103
WHEATON  William     Exeter  10 103

So, just to recap...
it looks as if Sara Sophia Parris married William Newton Goodridge in 1839, with whom she had Margaret, Thomas, William and Kate. William Newton Goodridge must have died between 1849/1850, because in 1851  Sarah was a widow and Kate was only 1yr old.

She and James Sellers married in 1854 and lived next to her parents (the Parris family).
They had Samuel K (c.1855), Walter (19/11/1855)
John Parris Sellers (1861) and Amy E (c.1859)

I have plotted all the info so far and it's looking good, but have I missed anyone out?  ;)

What happened to Samuel? Perhaps he died.(sorry, thinking aloud now:-[)

Extracted baptism on the IGI for Sarah Sophia Parris 20 March 1818, and sister Elizabeth 1816, both at Colyton.

Maybe the Elizabeth who married Samuel?  Or Thomas Goodridge ?

Parents John and Elizabeth;

John Parris married Elizabeth How : 7 Nov 1815 Colyton  - extracted record.

Hi Sue

I've been looking at the Parris's - half a story!

The Parris' living next door to James Sellars in 1851 were:

John Head M 30  Anniutant  B. Colyton
Elizabeth  Wife 35   ~        B. Chard, Somerset
Elizabeth Mother 36   ~     B. Axminster, Devon

This last is obviously (  ;D ) incorrect, at least her age must be.

John Parris was baptised at Colyton 31 Mar 1822, he is obviously Sarah and Elizabeth's brother.

In 1841 he was living alone in Colyton, of independent means.

A John Parris married Q4. 1848 Axminster to Elizabeth Quicke.
That is the only John Parris marriage to an Elizabeth that I can see between 1841 and 1851 in Devon or Somerset.

I can't find mother Elizabeth in 1841 - not sure how old she was, whether she was already a widow and where she was living.

So - there is - as I said - half a story - and I'm now going to call it a day !

Thanks Mum44

Have you got the original for the 1851 census?

Perhaps if we could see it we could decipher how old Elizabeth (mother) REALLY was, that is if it is a mistranscription rather than a dyslexic enumerator! ;)

Hi Sue

Well, it was either a dyslexic enumerator or a lying old lady ( ;D ) because it is clearly 36. !  Maybe he got confused because the other Elizabeth was 35 - and wrote it down automatically - 35,36, (and James Sellers, next line, 37)

I am not sure if this thread died, but James Sellers was (I think, though there are some date errors)  my great, great grandfather, via (and the rest is definitely true)  his son Tom Henry Sellers, born in Colyton. His daughter  Emily Ida Sellers married my grandfather Theodore Stone, and produced three sons, one of whom Brian Stone was my father. Has anyone made any more progress than recorded in this thread?

Hi Merlin,
Welcome to the Sellers Saga!
Do you think that your Tom Henry Sellers was the same as Thomas Goodridge b.1849, who then later became known as Sellers? Do you have a date of birth or any other information for him?  According to things found out here, Thomas (Mother Sarah Sophia Parris/Goodridge/Sellers) was born in Exeter and were living in Bedminster when he was 22 years old (in 1871).

Regards
Sue H

No, he was not.  James Sellers remarried and Goodridge was his stepson. I have an e-mail from the Colyton local history people which I could forward if you e-mail me on

Every so often I come accross this thread - I am researching my father's side of the family and have the tree public on ancestry.co.uk if you want to look. I think Paris actually may refer to a street in Exeter. I know at some point there was a John 'Paris' Sellers living in the street but have lost the information due to a computer crash. I think this would have been to distinguish him from my own relations who lived and had carriage works in Exeter which were fairly extensive. They began in Egypt Lane and extended to Bedford street and also to Catherine Street - making them situated exactly between the Half Moon Inn and the London Inn, and near to Bedford Circus and therefore at one point fairly well off! (Later Sellers not so lol.)

http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/32129810/family

I am actually wondering if James Rueben Sellers links to the druggist mentioned here but haven't had time to investigate as yet. One reason for this is that the mother in that generation is Rebecca Davills of Crediton, which is not far from Colyton. My father is in the John Alexander line of the tree and the one where the tradition of naming the son John Alexander or John Alexander Rounsiful (or variation of Rounsiful) ends with his elder brother. Sadly they named him Eric. It is odd but my initials are J.A and Jackalyn is a female form of John.............when my kids were born it was absolutely imperative they began with J.......(but I digress!)

Here is the link if it helps any. It is a work in progress and will probably change a bit (sure I have the Alexanders reversed or maybe their wives reversed!)

Incidentally, in case it ties in anywhere. My parents did do some research in Exeter and seem to have visited a Sellers Cottage and for some reason acquired a copy of Samuel Anning Sellers will. I put a post on Exeter Memories website.

So far I have only been able to trace the Exeter Sellers. I am certain that they are descended from John  Sellers of Broadclyst and Rebecca Davills of Crediton.

In 1859 a  John Alexander Sellers married an Emma Sophia Lendon. She might tie in somewhere for someone else? The family is in the census for 1851 and 1861 but by 1877 the John Sellers branch had left Exeter. Here is the link as it has some of the dates in.

Hi Jackalyn,

Thank you for your posts. I am afraid that at the moment I am not able to spend much time on the family history stuff as I am preparing to go to my son's wedding in Vietnam! However, your Exeter link makes very interesting reading, but coachworks do not ring any bells!

The fact that there are familiar names such John Alexander (my father) and Ida (my great Aunt). Ida was a Tremeer, who married into the Sellers family - to Walter Paris Sellers, makes me think that there is possibly a link, but I don't know what!!!

Hopefully I will have more time to investigate further on my return, but if you find out anything further in the meantime............. ;)

Hi,
Hope the wedding goes well. I have Walter William Cuthbert but he is born in Exeter to John Alexander and Elizabeth Cuthbertson. Of more interest to those who are looking at Colyton I found some notes my mum made on my parents trip to Exeter. Some of them actually contradict what is in ancestry searches but seeing as they are both still compos mentis and were younger then and actually saw the graves I would go with my parents record rather than possible input mistakes by subscribers to bmd indexes. Unfortunately this was a fair few years ago and my mum used pencil for the notes so they are very faint.

I have a few Colyton Sellers that might be of interest.

Geoffrey Sellers and Ann Bussell 1776
John and Mary Rochall ?Rockhall 1774
Geoffry Sellers and Sarah Skinner either 1767 or 78

No idea why she thought this, but my mum has a note that my James and his brother Thomas 'may have gone to Brixham.'

I also have an 'extract of will' that says John Seller to be buried in the church of Colyton 1573

James Sellers transported for life on the Ganymede in  ? for stealing a purse containiing 13 gold sovereigns in 1834. http://www.sellers-sellars-sollars-zellars.net/england.htm

1723 Oath Rolls at 'The Golden Lion, Colyton,'-John Seller marked S which I think refers to the prayer book rebellion and whatever it was they had to sign to say they followed the common prayer book - http://www.foda.org.uk/oaths/QS17/2/2/17b.htm
