Title: Address in Rhosnessney
Post by: Doggy on Sunday 17 February 08 15:27 GMT (UK)
Hi
I am just sorting through some old photos that my dad has and I'm curious to see if my grandfather address is still there or if not does someone know where or what became of it?
The address is 6 Park View, Rhosnessney.

Regards

A search on www.streetmap.co.uk does not show one in Wrexham. I would guess it was near Park Avenue which is in the same area and is still there. It might be worth enquiring at the A N Palmer centre to confirm.

Sorry.

Hi Peter

Thanks for looking.  They were living there from at least around the 1901 census until some time in the twenties I guess.  I forgot to look and see if it is on oldmaps.co.uk  ::)

Cheers again

Acton Park is in Rhosnessney area, could have been thereabouts,
if you give us a clue with names , ages, place of birth  for 1901 census ,could have a look and try to locate it.

Hi Wilcoxon

My grandfather was Percival Vaughan JONES born 1893 Ruabon, Father was Edward 1862 Ruabon and mother Jane Shropshire, Pontesbury.

If you need anymore then give me a shout.

Cheers

I would guess that it used to be roughly where Herbert Jennings Avenue now is. Close to Acton Park and Oak Drive is also close - there is mention of Oak Lodge and Oak Cottages in the 1901 which are no longer there as well. Acton Park Farm also used to be in the same area (I actually remember buying a bottle of milk from there) and again that is in the next pages.

Hi Peter

Thank you so much for looking into this.  I tried to look at old maps and the change in the area from the early maps to 1930's is amazing.  Any ideas what all the new housing was for (industry or overspill from other connurbations or something else)?

Cheers

Just new houses - probably about 40 years ago but I may well be wrong. Oak Drive where my grandparents used to live was definitely council property covering a pretty large area. The new houses may be council & private at a guess.  It is a long time since I saw them properly although I do go a little in that direction for old times sake!

Peter.

I`m certain there is a street index in  Palmer centre, but it could be only for town, I`ll have a look when I go again.
Around the Gate Hangs High area, heading back up to Acton Gate, it`s mostly private housing now, but I would imagine they are about 30 / 40 years old.
Practically every village on the outskirts of Wrexham has grown so much in the last 10/15 years, they are in danger of  meeting up in the middle.
All new soulless estates with no character. ???

It would be great if you could find anything in the Palmer Centre, please do let me know.
If you've seen the census you would have noticed that my G Grandfather Edward, was a modeller (in a brickworks ?).  They must have moved from Ruabon abt 1899 to Rhosnessney looking at the birth places of the children, but his occupation was still the same in 1891 & 1901.  Were there any brickworks close by?

Abenbury brickworks were about a mile away.
If you " Google " Abenbury Brickworks you should find the Wrexham Gov site , it has a bit on info on them.

Hi
The Acton estate was built following the first world war, :( ostensibly as housing for returning Military, but several strikes in the building trade in the 1920's put this idea on the " back Burner" :-[, and the houses were eventually completed, and occupied  by mineworkers employed at the newly sunk and opened Gresford Colliery.

Interesting chat on Rhosnessney.  My grandfather and family lived at 3 Park View.  Rogers by name.
My father was born there but in a few years they had left.  My grandfather was a 'Coal Hewer.

I feel that Park View was on what is now Rhosnesni Lane near to the Gate Hangs High pub. I am sure I have seen a photograph of it but I will have to check for you.

Yes, I thought I was right. You know how you remember something but you can't remember where you've seen it.

Park View is still there actually. It is on the left hand side of Rhosnesni Lane coming from Dean Road towards the now roundabout with Borras Road. Further along on the left is the Gate Hangs High pub which can be seen on the photograph.

Incidentally the Acton Estate was designed by Lord Abercrombie in the 1920's and was built on land previously belonging to Acton Hall.

It was the Garden Village estate which was built in 1913 that was built to house the miners and officials of Gresford Colliery.

Garden Village is further north on the left of Chester Road going out of Wrexham town.
