Hi there,
Wondered if anyone could help me finding Laura.
She is the sister of my Grandfather.
Laura Simmons born 19th September 1892,
3 Court 2 John Street, Barnsley
I have her birth certificate.
Her Parents were John Simmons and Annie Selina Fisher.
They only had my Grandfather Herbert and Laura.
I have her on the 1901 census living at 2 Court 4 School Street, Barnsley. with her Mother (her parents were separated) and her Stepbrother George W. Fisher (born before Annie's marriage to John) and a lodger. It does look like LALORA on the 1901 census, but I suspect their dialect was strong.
Herbert aged 14 yrs. was not with them on this census and I cannot find him (perhaps he was in the pub)
I have looked through all the registers at Barnsley Crematorium and found no burial, I have looked though the birth indexes and cannot find a marriage or a death. AM I MISSING SOMETHING.
Please help.....

1901 RG13/3016 folio 8 page 8 Uppingham Rutland
High Street
Herbert W Symons age 16 born York Yorkshire boarder
Lots of other young boarders
Caz
George Fisher would be Lauras half brother not step brother same mother different fathers.
Annie Simmons born 1862 died 1911 age 50 Barnsley Yorkshire/West Riding 9c 359
Wonder who reported the death.

Hi Pam
I dont think this is Herbert in Rutland, he did not have a middle name
and yes you are right it is her half brother, brain not quite in gear,
and Annies death was reported by her son George W Fisher.
I have even placed a notice (last year) in the Barnsley Chronicle and had one reply from a lovely aged gentleman which turned out to be no relation at all.
I have been researching family history mine and most of my friends for a few years now, and Laura is really a problem to find.
thanks anyway

Hello Caz,
Herbert Simmonds is on the 1891 census age 5 a boarder along with Annie and other Fishers.. living with the Emma Willer houseold. at Worsborough Bridge.
I live in Barnsley by the way.

Hi again Caz.
I have Herbert born 6th December 1885 from BDM Free.
Also married December1912 to either Elsie Edwards, or Ethel Malkin. do these names ring any bells?
Percy.

Hi Percy
Nice to talk to a Barnsley person, I live in Silkstone Common.
My Herbert was born on 18th August 1885 at 17 Joseph Street, Barnsley, if you know the area, Joseph Street is just off left up New Street.
my Herbert married Ethel Malkin.
The Herbert bit I am ok with, I have all the dates and certs except where he was on the 1901 census aged 15yrs. He was a bit of a 'rogue' so goodness knows where he was.
It is the sister I cannot find, on the 1901 census she is living with hee Mother Annie Simmons and it looks like LALORA on the census, you know the Barnsley dialect in those days, Annie probably said to the enumerator "ar Laura". I have Laura's birth cert. 19th Sept 1892 and then the 1901 census and absolutely nothing from then on.
Thanks for trying to help

Hi Carol,
Have you tried searching the marriage index on ancestry using the wildcard spelling of Simm*** to see if that brings up any possibilities for her marriage?
Did Laura have a middle name?
Jen (another Barnsley Lass)

Hi Jen,
Laura did not have a middle name, I have done the ancestry thing, and have only found a Laura Simms. I looked on the 1901 census and the only Laura Simms in the Barnsley area, ws 11 yrs and living at Wombwell with her Grandmother. I did not feel that was enough to send for the cert. I am a true Barnsley lass, £7 is a lot of wasted money, I have done it a few times over the years. I have even waded through the deaths and marriages on the index three times over the last year, and that is so boring, but have found nothing. if she died she is not in the grave of her parents, I have found them in Barnsley cemetery, this is now becoming an obsession with me.
I am so grateful for any ideas anyone has, so thank you.
