Hi
I see on Ancestry that there are directory entries for a A J Caldicott in Australia. I am looking for a Alfred Jolly Caldicott who left England about 1853 and moved to Australia, he was a printer before moving. I wondered whether someone could please look at these for me as I don't have an Ancestry sub.
Many thanks
Rosie

In 1894....the last entry.....he is at 36 Llewellyn St, Balmain. Page 574.

May I correct you deeiluka -
From the CD blurb
The Biographical Index was originally published in 1986 and is a major biographical work containing approximately 100,000 entries of South Austalians who were born or arrived in the colony during this period. The information was gleaned from research by the South Australian Genealogy and Heraldry Society in archives, public records, private papers and letters of administrations as well as contributions from individuals.
The South Australians 1836-1885 was published in 1990 to compliment the 'Biographical Index; and contains an additional 7,500 biographical entries.
The publication [CD and book] in 1990 have the contributors/submitters of the information coded and they are listed in the back of the CD/book.
To make a blanket statement that the information in BISA is all contributed information is not correct.

I stand corrected...... :-[
However, like anything, it does not pay to take the information at face value unless you check against other information.
.....dee

Oh I agree with you...secondary info only. Sadly there are many inaccuracies but a wonderful resource all the same.

It is a great starting point, Tee.....and if Rosie wants more information, it points her and us in the right direction.

Could this be a possibility for Alfred's death?

Hi Everyone
Many thanks for all your messages received since I posted yesterday afternoon.
I had been looking for Alfred Jolly Caldicott in the UK but couldn't find him after 1851 and neither could Willow 4873 so we came to the conclusion he had probbaly emigrated.
Shortly after this I discovered the research on Worldconnect that Sparret also found so then I was after looking for ANYTHING I could find on him to substantiate the info on this researchers pages. I know I should really have started by searching for his emigration after 1851 but I never was logical!
Anyway to answer Dee's question, yes that is the Alfred who I am looking for that you have found on BISA. He was married to Henrietta Saunders bn c1803 Birmingham and had the following children who were still alive in 1851 and all born Wolverhampton
Robert H bn c1833
Henrietta Harriet c1835
Sarah Jane c1838
Alice E c1839
I am actually seeking this info for a friend who is computerless so I may be a bit vague with some details. Also this is my first venture into Australian research so still 'green' concerning Australian websites and therefore extremely grateful for any help or guidance on this search.
:)
Thank you
Rosie

Hi Raylen
Thank you for this, it would certainly fit in with his age. Is there somewhere where I could obtain more details on it please?

Thank you, I think I may have been barking up the wrong tree with this search as he was obviously 'getting on' by these dates and other evidence points to him dying c1888.

The death of the wife is interesting
Death in South Australia
CALDICOTT Henriette
Date: 1866-07-02
Sex: F
Age: 62y
Status: M
Relative: Alfred CALDICOTT (H)
Residence: Melbourne [VIC]
Death Place: Nailsworth
District Code: Ade
Book: 18
Page: 330
Now does that mean she lived in victoria but died in South Australia
kind regards Jenn
-
Thank you Jenn
It certainly looks as though she was living in Victoria. Perhaps she was staying with one of the children.
According to Dee, BISA gives her dying Adelaide and being buried West Terrace Cemetery. Only the death certificate would solve this I suppose or is your transcription from this info? Sorry I haven't got to grips with Australian web sites yet.
Rosie
-
Rosie,
South Australia has excellent Births, Deaths and Marriages indexes that give quite a bit of detail, which is where Jenn found Henriette's death.
The death certificate for Henriette would actually have very little extra information on it, other than possibly cause of death.
If you would like any of the other members followed up for details in the Indexes, please let us know. :D :D

Dee
Thank you very much for the offer relating to bmd look ups.
I think you covered marriage and death info on Robert Henry on a previouse reply but I would be grateful for any information on the following siblings.
Harriet Henrietta who married Samuel Decimus Wastell 16/3/1861 Adelaide. She died 28/1/1913.
Sarah Jane who married Walter James Witt 29th June 1857. She died c1858.
Alice Elizabeth who married John Arthur Morrison 6th August 1879. She died in 1917.
Are these details available for anyone to look at or are they on a subscription site ?
Thanks again
Rosie
-
Rosie, unfortunatley these details are not available online at all, either free or on a subscription site. However, I can check them out for you and shall do so happily. :D
I have sent a PM.

Two of the children died young.

Sarah Jane who married Walter James Witt 29th June 1857. She died c1858.
The only thing I can see for Sarah Jane Caldicott is her marriage to James Walter Witt....no children, and no death for her, or James.

Alice Elizabeth who married John Arthur Morrison 6th August 1879. She died in 1917.
Nothing for Alice Elizabeth except her marriage ....no births registered. But she was aged 38 on the marriage entry.
Her death was not 1917 either, but the 4th December 1913 at Knightsbridge. She was aged 72, her husband was given as John Arthur MORRISON , deceased, and she was residing at Knightsbridge.
Ref = Nor 379/374
Her husband John Arthur MORRISON died aged 57 on 17 November 1901 at Medindie where he was residing. No relative was listed.

That is brilliant, thank you so much Dee. I'll have to speak to my friend tomorrow and see where he wants to go from here.

I'm a descendant of Alfred Jolly Caldicott via his son Robert Henry. Alfred migrated to Adelaide in 1853. He died in 1888 Parramatta, NSW. I published a Caldicott history in 1987 containing data on this family and related families such as Wastell. I will publish a Wastell counterpart in 2010.
The AJC in Sydney, listed in directories, was not Alfred Jolly but of a different family.
-
some information concerning these posts: Henrietta [not Henriette] Caldicott did not live in Melbourne, her husband went there, leaving her in Adelaide; Sarah Jane C's husband Walter James Witt died in South Australia in 1920; Alice Elizabeth Morrison had no children but raised some step-children; Robert Henry C was born not in 1831 but 1833; his wife's parents were Robert Tuckey Saunders and Emma Jones [not Peyton]; their 2nd son was Henry George.

Hi ger23ard
Many thanks for your replies to this post. I will pass them on to my friend. :)
I had forgotten I'd even done this so will have to get it sorted in my head ::)
You say you published a Caldicott History, is this still available?
Best wishes
