Title: JOSEPH POGSON
Post by: cyprus on Saturday 16 February 08 17:37 GMT (UK)
Joseph Pogson was born in 1830 in Lingards Yorks to James & Betty Pogson

Joseph married Charlotte Armitage in 1852, and had a son Sam (my gt gt grandfather)
Charlotte died in 1856.  Leaving Sam behind Joseph left for America in the 1870,s
Joseph appears on the 1880 USA census for New London Norwich Conn. with new wife Margaret ? (born Scotland) and son George D (born 1874 Main)
Joseph also appears on the 1887-89 directories for Norwich Conn
Josephs son George D appears on an 1896 directory for Norwich as 'rem to Arizona. George D appears on the 1900 census for Pima Arizona.

After this there is no trace of the family.  Letters from George D in 1886 to his stepbrother Sam in the UK speak of cousins, Aunts and Grandparents (poss his mother family) visiting them in Norwich.

Any Ideas where to look to find out what happened to the family and who Margaret was.

They do seem to disappear, don't they? I would try contacting the Pima county Library

http://www.library.pima.gov/

Maybe they can give you  little guidance. I would also try the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness site for Connecticut. My guess is his parents died before that directory listing for George in Norwich, or his dad would have been mentioned there. There could be a tombstone or church that might give you guidance.

And here is a site for Norwich genealogy: http://www.norwichct.org/content/169/177/default.aspx

It's a start at least.

Many thanks for your suggestions.
Have spent the day looking through cem records for both states.
But still nothing. Lots of sites bring you back to Ancestry (of which I have been a member for yrs).
Have looked at chat rooms for both states, and left messages, but if George had no children I may be the only one looking for them. Hopefully someone will be looking for a marrage to Joseph Pogson, ie Margarets family.

Many thanks for the information.
Joseph Pogson was born in 1830 ish. He did not appear on the UK census for April 1871, so I presumed he had left the UK by then, but could not find him on the 1870 for the US. So I thought he had moved between the census dates. So much of the information for the Pugson man is the same, down to occupation I feel this must be him.
I did find the naturalisation record last year. And the entry in the Norwich directory for Joseph and Margaret's deaths. There son George D seemed to remain in the area until 1895 (directory information) in 1896. He was listed as removed to Arizona . The 1900 census gives a George B as living in Pima Arizona, after this I found no trace of George D.

Yes, he seems to disappear again.  Didn't find a death record for him in Arizona.
