Title: Euphemia - pronunciation please
Post by: sueky71 on Friday 15 February 08 23:19 GMT (UK)
How do you say Euphemia?

I've got loads of Scottish ancestors and the name is quite common amongst them. I've always pronounced it to myself as Yew-femia, but someone recently mentioned an Aunt Effie, so now I'm thinking is it Eff-emia?

I've always heard it as You-feem-ya. Euffie and Effie are its pet names.

From another of  those 'names' websites:

However, if you were in a Greek-speaking country it would be pronounced Ev-femia.

Ask Lydart, she should know.  ;)

Apparently in Scotland Euphemia is an anglicised way of writing an unpronouncable Gaelic name, spelled something like Eighrig.  It was often shortened to Effie which corresponded more closely to the name said in Gaelic
