Confused of Manchester!!
My ancestors Ellisons who were woolstaplers, a colliery owner, a turnpike surveyor and were listed as gentry (where did it all go wrong!) came from Birkenshaw, were married and some are buried in St Pauls graveyard.
I have some info on them but according to censuses back to 1841 sometimes they listed the place born as Birstall and sometimes Birkenshaw. Is this one and the same place or very close?
One family lived in Threelands house which was on Birkenshaw Lane and brothers or sisters lived a few houses along the same road. Did this lane change to Bradford Road or am I getting confused?
I have googled Threelands as it was a big house and it comes up as the HQ for W York ambulance NHS. I don't know if this is one and the same place.
Can anyone shed any light for me please

Hi
Birkenshaw used to be in the parish of Birstall....Doubt it is now but they arent very far away.Threelands is now the home of West Yorks Ambulance HQ its a big place and im sure it used to be an old peoples home before that. But Birkenshaw Lane and Bradford road are NOT the same.
Ive come across the name Henry Ellison in my research Yorkshire Tar Distillers at Moorend Cleckheaton was owned by the Ellison family as was another chemical works in Heckmondwike (White Lea it blew up in 1916) he eventually retired to Morcambe.
I live close by if you have any more questions.

Hi Ady
Thanks for replying.
I havent got a Henry Ellison in my tree so far, but I havent come that far forward in the 1800's yet. I only have direct and a few aunts and uncles along the way, so will check but some of the Ellisons did live in Heckmondwike.
Do you know where I could get a photo of the Threelands that is still standing West Yorks Ambulance HQ? I have a photo of it in 1903. This was definately on Birkenshaw Lane Birkenshaw.
Another link is that some of the Ellisons lived in Grange over Sands which is near Morecambe.

I took a drive past today and the area which i thought the house stood is now a building site!! there are a lot of development going on up there.I drove down Birkenshaw Lane and across onto Old Lane and that would have taken you pretty much straight to Threelands The area there has some big houses which were on a par with Threelands....
I used to go up that area as a kid 25 yrs ago but wow its changed loads!!
I think its the same family Ellisons from Grange Over Sands way. My grandma was friends with some Ellisons in Cleckheaton and thats how she met my Grandad he moved down from Kirkby Lonsdale to work at the Ellison Chemical Works at Moorend.
Theres an Alfred Ellison on the Hunsworth and Birkenshaw Great War Memorial. an original Bradford "Pal" 16/855 Is is service number born in Birkenshaw Killed in 1918.

Thanks again for info.
I am so pleased at least I know that the building is now no more! Been wondering about this for the last 4 years. I live in Manchester so it is a little far to check out.
My Ellisons all lived in large houses along from Threelands, they all had plenty of money so perhaps those houses you saw were connected to my people.
Between 1910 and 1920 there was a Colonel Anderton living in Threelands and then another mr Ellison but he had no connection to my Ellisons..coincidence.
oops, I think I got it wrong, some Ellisons were not from Grange over sands, but Kirby Lonsdale! Levens Hall.
Just checked other info Hartlington Mill in Bradford was managed by Benjamin Beaumont -Ellison for the Ambler family in 1800's. He eventually married a daughter Mary I think. They were one of the family of Ellisons who lived at Threelands.
Has anyone heard of this family?
I will check out Alfred and Henry Ellison to see if somewhere they are a link to me
thanks again

Hi The Andertons were a big family around here in the 1890s-1930s
Re: Kirkby Lonsdale if you ever find a link between a Margaret Tallon( she married William Taylor both born c1892) and the Ellisons could you let me know as family rumour has it thats how my grandadWilliam H Tallon and his brother in law John Willan moved down from there to Cleckheaton in 1919/1920
Thanks

I noticed a post about the Ellison family of Threelands, Bradford Road, Birkenshaw. My husband's grandfather had a sister who married Francis Beaumont Ellison and lived at Threelands. They appear in the 1911 Census with 8 of a family. If this is your line I can send a pic of the lady and more info.

Answering your original question
Start years of parish registers for baptisms
Birkenshaw, St Paul 1832
Birstall parish 1558
Therefore your family in 1841c ?? or later censuses could be either depending on year of bapt and abode. Pre 1831 baptisms would be in Birstall parish - Sub chapelry Birkenshaw or abode Birkenshaw
Also Birth place was not always the same place as the baptism parish, census usually give place of birth and the 1841c usually just give county of birth.
My granddad was born in Harthill Nottinghamshire Dec 1867 baptized in Wales village parish Yorkshire Jan 1868 and his brother born Nov 1868 Harthill Notts bapt Scarcliffe parish Derbyshire Dec 1868
Harthill and Wales village are about a mile apart each side of the county border and Gt Granddad moved from Harthill to Scarcliffe Dec 1868.
So things arn't always what they seem in the census years.

Hi Jutland 3
I have Francis Beaumont Ellison in my tree. He was my 2nd cousin 3x removed. He married Maria Hunter in 1900 and when widowed married her sister Barbara Hunter in 1922. His great grandparents were John Ellison and Hannah Wilkinson. They were my 4 x greatgrandparents.
I have portraits of both of them and other info.
Hi Dobfarm
thanks for the info re Birstall and Birkenshaw, it has been confusing but I will look at my info along with the info you gave me and see where I go from here.
Many thanks

related to the Ellisons of Haifax but believe the cleckheaton branch came from queensbury or bingley. Bingley lot were related to the family which owned fox's biscuits. don't know where the queensbury ones came from. halifax one's may have had some links to newcastle. in terms of threelands the old ambulance station you can get some details regarding what it looked like on old maps or on things called goad plans from local planning office.

Hi
One or more of the Bradford, Leeds, Dewsbury, Huddersfield & Halifax libraries will have old maps and maybe old photos of that area. Some libraries do free half hour look ups and copies of section of the maps also of photo's don't cost that much.

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat web site :)
I'm not sure what your request really is about , as whether your doing Henry Ellison's Ancestry or The origins of the tar company
Here is a little bit about a Henry Ellison involved in tar concerns ? for others who may known more ???
YORKSHIRE TAR DISTILLERS - In 1886, Henry Ellison of Cleckheaton purchased four acres of land. This firm became known as Ellison & Mitchell Limited and distilled tar. In 1927, the important tar distillers amalgamated to form the Yorkshire Tar Distillers Limited. The Kilnhurst works expanded from four acres to thirty acres and a quantity of tar being distilled increased by five times. In later years the company was acquired by Croda and operated until circa 2000.

Hi MMM 45 and Dobfarm,
Thanks for your prompt replies. I am new to this site so I don't know how to send you personal messages. Maybe if you send me your direct e mails we could have a more in depth conversation.
My interest in Henry Ellison is driven by our interest in a steam locomotive that we are close to completing at the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway in Derbyshire. It was bought new for use at the Kilnhurst tar plant and is named 'Henry Ellison'. We are trying to build a life around the name and to make contact with living relatives who we can invite to the re-dedication ceremony for publicity purposes.
I am close to building a basic family tree of the Ellison family but it is only what is available on the Ancestors website. At the moment it is a bit sterile and I need the personal touches, hence my appeal for help from people who are directly related to either the plant or the people.
I hope that you can help.

Hi, NGHIC .
First you need to post another reply! (3 in all) to use the PM system of contact. Rules of the website is -all new members need 3 posts (I haven't a clue either why?) on the public board forum threads to use the PM's.
3 other guides and general rules
1) Rule- We never put our email address on the public boards
2) Rule -We never talk about living people by name or age (or date /or year of Birth etc)
as they may personally object or legal reasons
Guide - ID theft is rampant, hence we try not to use our own I D's and advice most members not to give out their email address- (willy nilly) to any unknown new members as there are people who pretend to do ancestry to obtain ID's/Email addresses (ie:~ to send out spam/scam mail) or join websites like this for just that purpose. They usually show themselves up by direct questions or haven't time or patience as normal members doing honest family history interests! have.
Not so much now! but many banks used to use mothers maiden names as security questions.
Therefore a new-bee asking about using PM's and wanting members to sent email addresses by PM's sets alarm bells ringing. Most ancestry new members come straight in yapping about their own ancestry first and wanting info or help with it!
******************************************************************
However! A slow approach though the normal routes as below may bring results and in time members may ? build up a trust with you in the same interests as you.
I advise using the Forum tab & Help tab at the top of page menu and look down the list.
Use this forum board in the link below and start a fresh topic of your interest

As an after thought,
Tell them of your research first
Try the Librarian at YAS Leeds as they may know of someone who is researching this family Ellison history or the Tar company as they get lots of family history research requests,
http://www.yas.org.uk/content/contact.html
Worth a try.

Thanks Dobby for your replies. I did not realise that there is a protocol for using these sites and that identity theft was such a problem. I can now see that trying to trace the relatives of once wealthy people could be regarded with suspicion.
However our task is honourable (go onto the evr website if you are interested) and we will continue ever onwards. Thanks for the Leeds suggestion, I will contact them in due course.

Hi,
These fraudsters, scamsters and hackers spoil most peoples lives or hobbies but they play the numbers game and soon spotted mainly by their own stupidity -ancestry is the long game -theirs is the very short game (or long game in HMS Prison ;D ;D ;D ) with hope to trip people up.
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
Just keep asking at places where people research-WYAS archives at Sheepcar Leeds or Wakefield also Kirklees & Leeds Libraries.
Good luck ;)

Dobby helpfully suggests contacting WYAS. Note that their Sheepscar premises are now closed and WYAS are due to re-open in Morley, probably in November.

I know this is a very very old post but I believe I may be able to shed some light on the original posters question.
You're all right really..I grew up in Birkenshaw around the corner from "Threelands". When I was a child it was an old peoples care home known as "Threelands Grange".
The West Yorkshire Ambulance Service had their HQ in the original old house that was surrounded by a huge wall.. I havent been to Birkenshaw in about 10 years now but I believe the old peoples home was pulled down and a new housing area was built there. I think the old house was taken down too.
My great great Grandmother, Isabella Briggs (nee Murray) was in service at the house in 1886 and when she left to get married she was presented with a bible by her employers Mr & Mrs George Ellison, I still have the bible and can photography the inscription if you like.
Anyway, I know quite a lot about Birkenshaw and so if you have any questions, I'd be only too happy to answer them or try to find out :)

Hi Jensav
I had forgotten I posted this original one!! Thanks for the info.
George Ellison was a cousin so many times removed, living in Threelands Grange which was originally my ggg grandparents house. His wife was Mary and he died in 1896.
On old censuses the addresses were given as house names originally so I have a few names but don't know whereabouts in Birkenshaw the properties were. I will go and have a dig through masses of paperwork and check.
If you could photograph the inscription in the book that would be good, but how to get it as I cant put my email address on here?
I will get my thinking hat on again and let you know if any questions.
many thanks K

Why dont you send me a private message with your email address and I will send you a photo of the inscription? It pretty much just says that the bible is presented to my relative by George Ellison in remembrance of her services and the year etc but it is handwritten and presumably by Mr (or Mrs) Ellison as the handwriting differs from where my relative has added the births of her children etc..its a beautiful black leather bound bible.
