Thanks guys for your help. I used to live in Garston, but I don't ever remember anyone mentioning these cottages. Probably before my time ;D
I will ask next time I go the records office, they may have a photo.

Just been looking up this cottages you mention redkop on the 1881
They are Aigburth/mossley hill end.
In fact they seem to have been around Carnatic road and elmswood road(which someone called elmswood st earlier)
Also which is interesting is
There are actualy two familys living at the end of the Stananought Cottages
in carnatic road named Stananoughton
Also George terreces are at the end of the cottages.
As you will know being a exgarstoite
Carnatic road runs from north mossley hill road to Victoria road and into sefton park
Elmswood road runs from the cotinuation of Rose lane down towards the park over Aigburth vale
If this is correct.
I think the cottages may have been situated along mossley hill roar north
Possible where the carnatic halls of residence are now.
As most of the old buildings still survive along mossley hill road north
Needless to say all are now rest homes
Hope this helps
Eric

Richard STANANOUGHT age 35 in 1881 bron mossley vale liverpool
Find him living at carnatic road.
Just click one household to the right
That will take you to Georges cotages
Keep clicking a good 7 to 10 times
You will get to the cottages.

I have just been studying the maps on Toxtethnet
Which just skirt around the area in question
I notice that along Victoria road
Which is where now the Aigburth arms and a sundry of 60s flats vacate
There are a row of cottages named Greens and Brookfield's
Also some terraces names Victoria , Gordon. and St Johns
So its possible Georges terraces where facing Hollywood road and birchtree road
Which are still there(well they were last night, but some right scallys live round there now)
I notice the Aigburth arms pub was then on the right hand side
Almost facing where the new one now stands.

In ancestry.com 1891 England Census house nos. 23-42 Gordon Terrace, Garston are named Stananought Cottages. My eldest daughter has ancestors at No.24, her gtx2 grandfather's brother William Henry Drew & family.

sorry everybody but I have never heard of Irwell St/george Terrace/gordon terrace or Stananought Cottages...and from everyones research I am a little bemused as to why they are classed as Garston when they are clearly in Aigburth...and don`t forget that in between Garston and Aigburth we have Cressington and also Grassendale....Garston wasn`t classed as being part of Liverpool until 1906 (might have been 1903) so I am a little baffled....sorry I couldn`t help...allan

I'm like you I can never get my head around some of the districts they have parts of Liverpool in.
My GrandFather lived under the bridge in 1911.
Yet it is down as a district of Wavertree and part of West Derby.
There is still an Irwell close just by the Aigburth arms pub
But now its flats
The streets I named for RedKop were from a map I was looking at on the now defunct Toxtethnet
The roads ran down from victoria road towards the park and aigburth vale(THE ROAD NOT THE AREA)
To me and you this is Aigburth, heading south as you say we go through Grassendale and Gressington before reaching Garston
But unless like you and me you come from these areas
You would be none the wiser
I was just looking at another posters interests, on it he has some streets where his family lived in 1911.
He has them down as west derby
But to me they are Old Swan, albiet just on the border of WD
Unlike Garston
But as we know they talk about the West Derby hundred and not the district as we know it
Which also incompassed parts of St Helens and Prescot

Hi
Caught my eye when you mentioned Stananought Terrace as I have heard of it.
My relatives, Thomas Scarisbrick lived there in 1877, number 30. My dad was born and bred in Grassendale, and he said it sounds like its the far end of Aigburth?
In 1877 the address was
30, Stananought Terrace
Toxteth Park
Liverpool.
Any help or does this confuse things more???

Hi BENS,
on my 1881 census, my family live in Stananought Cottages ,not Terrace . And, it does say, Garston, not Toxteth. ???
Thanks for your interest. ;)
Also,
this family had moved to, Victoria Terrace, Garston by 1891. Anyone know where this is/was ???
Thanks again everyone,
Red :)

Hi,

Hi Red
First of all Stananought Cottages were not in Garston, but in Aigburth. They were in the what used to be the old village of Aigburth in Aigburth Vale, these houses locally known as the `Terraces`, were demolished about 1965.
I used to live in 18 Gordon Terrace until they were demolished. Gordon Terrace was divided by an alleyway which we used to call `The Entry`. One half was numbered 1-22 and the top half numbered 23-42, this half used to be called Stananought Cottages pre 1905. So named after a local dignitary.

Just thought I would add My 2'apth:
I can remember (within the last 15Yrs) seeing a Sign on the centre reservation at Aigburth Road, just past the Vale that said:
You are now Entering 'GARSTON'.
As far as I concerned, the only reason everyone thinks Gaston does.nt go that far is because the City Council is Always changing the Road Signs (for Socio-Political reasons! ::) ;)

Heyesie.
I thought You would be the one to Know! ;D

My son and I have just driven back from Liverpool (avoiding the bridge) and I noticed the official sign saying "Garston" is opposite the Cricket Club. I quite agree with Garstonite about Grassendale and Cressington, having been brought up to say I lived in Grassendale, claytonbradley

The important thing to note is that when the census data refers to Garston, it is refering to the township of Garston and not the central village. Until its absorption into Liverpool in 1902, all the people living in the Garston Township paid their local taxes to Garston Urban District Council. This includes those people living in the Garston districts of Aigburth vale, Aigburth, Grassendale and Cressington etc. For a map showing the boundaries of the township of Garston, go to

My great great grandfather was James Stananought (1803 – 1870).
In the 1841 census he is recorded as living in “Aigbuth hamlet, Township of Garston”.
In the 1861 census he is recorded as living in Aigburth Vale with profession of “Builder with 8 men and 7 boys”.
He is buried in Toxteth (Smithdown Road) Cemetery, grave N362 with other members of his family.
The inscription on the gravestone reads “James Stananought, builder of Aigburth”’
I am not sure for certain, but it looks highly likely that he built Stananought Cottages.
Regarding Aigburth/Garston, at the north corner of Ashfield Road and the old bit of Aigburth Road, outside the old (NatWest?) bank there are a pair of boundary stones. The left one is inscribed TTP and the right one TG. TTP is the Township of Toxteth Park and TG is the Township of Garston.
From memory, the boundary cuts across the corner to Aigburth Vale then runs up Aigburth Vale.
