Hi Jean

Just reread your reply and noticed there are Craigs in your family.

My great great grandfather was Thomas Craig, born in Ireland in 1839. I have a copy of a letter stating he was a sergeant 2/16 Reg. This letter was written at his request when he left the Army, dated Aug. 23, 1873 at Aldershot, North Curragh, Ireland.  We are not sure if this was the year he came to Canada or not. He had a son Alexander W., born July 27, 1870 and Baptized July 31, 1870, signed by H. Whinny, Chaplain of the forces. Any possible connection.

Don't think so Ann,

I can trace my Craigs back to around 1790 and they were are all born Scotland, originating in Perthshire.

One of the children born to William Clazy and Isabelle Purvis had the middle name of Johnstone...her first name was Jane.  I always thought it might be a maiden name from mother's family.

I also have an Eleanor Craig who married James Oswald Clazey in 1870.  Her family though may have been from Burnt Island.

I do not know if this will help...William Clazy and Isabelle Purvis named their oldest daughter, Jane Johnstone Clazy.  She was baptised October 1819, Coldstream.  I have always wondered at her middle name...assumed it was a family name from some line.  This family moved a bit...

a wee look at the igi's suggest that william dickson married margaret burnet at ladykirk, on the 16th june 1822.

a further check says that margaret burnet was the daughter of robert burnet and elizabeth logan and that she was christened 24th nov 1804 ladykirk.

a wee check of the census says

1841 census; hutton hall barnes cottages

robert...age 71...ag labourer
elizabeth...age 68

both born berwick

1851 census; hutton hall barnes cottages

robert...age 81...ag labourer...born eccles
elizabeth...age 77...born ladykirk

I have been researching a William Johnston born abt 1817 who married Eliza Fish abt 1840 and had 4 children in Chirnside between 1841 and 1848. Does anyone know where he fits in this family? I don't have the names of his parents but feel it is the same family.

Eliza is in the 1851 and 1861 census living with her own family, but her husband is not at home. In 1871 she is described as a widow, so presumably William must have died between 1861 and 1871.

Do you have any more information about them?

William Johnston, 24, carter, is in the household of William Fish in the 1841 census, with Eliza Fish, 24 and Janet Johnston, 1 month old so presumably this is he with his wife and daughter, his parents-in-law and his sister-in-law. Is this where you got his DoB?

Hello Forfarian, that is the only information I have about William. I can’t make out Eliza’s  marital status in 1851 but I believe she says she’s a widow in 1861. I have not been able to find an actual marriage record for William and Eliza.
So the one and only time I see William is in 1841.
But I do have a theory. In 1850, there is a William living with George Johnston born 1808 living in New York. William is 33 born in Scotland but the relationship to George is not given. George died Sept 3, 1883. George had married Jeanie Deward/Dow Orr Aug 29, 1835 in Ardrossan, Ayr, Scotland. George, a baker, and Jeanie are found in 1841 in Gorbals, Lanarkshire with children William, Elizabeth F., Hellen, and Jane A. These are the same children in the same birth order that are in Johnstown, Fulton Co. New York  in 1850, along with William age 33. I don’t find William again.
But in 1875, William’s daughter Elizabeth now married to George J. Logan is living next door to George Johnston.
When George died in 1883, his age was 75 years five months 24 days so I work that back to April 10, 1808. I found the birth of a George Johnston, April 24, 1808 in Chirnside and his parents were George Johnston and Elizabeth fish and he named his first daughter Elizabeth fish Johnston. So my theory is that George was born in Chirnside and William is his brother, but I can’t find William’s birth.

So are you saying that both George and his brother William married (two different) Eliza(beth) Fishes? And that William left his wife in Scotland and went to the USA with his brother's family?
Title: Re: Johnstone Family, Chirnside, Berwickshire, Scotland
Post by: Peggy13 on Tuesday 11 March 25 22:11 GMT (UK)
No, George married Jeanie Orr but his mother was possibly Elizabeth Fish, and his first daughter was Elizabeth Fish Johnston. And William is possibly his brother who was in Johnstown, Fulton Co., New York in 1850. William's last child was Margaret born Apr 23, 1848 and she married Alexander Nesbit Telford in 1872 in Chirnside before emigrating to New York in 1906 and she died in Hastings-on-Hudson in 1923. William's oldest child was Janet Fish Johnston, born in 1841, named after her grandmother Janet Fish, and she died in Feb 16, 1917 in Yonkers, Westchester, New York. William's daughter Elizabeth Logan died in 1913 in Yonkers. William's nephew William died in 1918 in Yonkers.
So 3 of 4 of William's children ended up in New York as did possibly William himself and William's nephew. So it could be possible that William and George are brothers. Yes, I think William left his wife in Scotland.
