Title: Cariol Square
Post by: wilkied on Sunday 10 February 08 18:09 GMT (UK)
Can anyone advise me how I can look up records for people who were in Cariol Square jail?  My relative Sarah Cottenham was in on census day 1881, that is the reason I know about it but would quite like to know why.
Thanks Wilkied

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.  I would think your best bet would be to contact the record office in Newcastle and ask if they have the records for Carliol Square prison.  They may have their catalogue online.

I will send this link, if it works. It has prisoner records , images of prisoners and info on the conviction for newcastle. I have been able to find quite a bit out from the site.

The records for the Borough Jail of Newcastle upon Tyne @ Carliol Square are held at TWAS in Newcastle.See their online user guide @
Borough Gaol and House of Correction, Newcastle upon Tyne
The last of Newcastle's prisons, the Borough Gaol, was closed in 1925. It was situated in Carliol Square and was built between 1823-1831, to designs by John Dobson. Prior to that the Newgate or north gate of the ancient town walls was used to house town prisoners and the Castle Keep for Assize prisoners.
