Hello,
My 5xGreat-Grandmother, Mary WEIR (PEAT) was born in Scotland in 1758c.
How would she have got from Scotland to Northumberland? Would there be records?
Mary was convicted in Northumberland 10 August 1793. Transported to Australia in 1794.

Scotland and England were both part of U.K. so no records were kept of people travelling between the two. As to the route she might have travelled it probably depends on where in Scotland and Northumberland she moved to and from.

Travel from Scotland to Northumberland might have involved only a few miles crossing from one side of the border to the other or it might have involved a journey of 100s of miles from the north of Scotland. She probably walked or got a lift on a carrier's cart for part of the way. Alternatively she might have travelled by sea - say from Leith to Newcastle- but this would have involved payment. It was possible to travel by stage coach but this would have been very expensive.

I'm a frequent traveller between Northumberland and Scotland :)
I see that you say in previous posts that she was b, Lesmahagow, Lanark - possibly this one:
25 August 1756, Mary Wier, daughter of William Weir and Marion Pait, Lesmahagow.
(I wonder if the Pait came from her mother?)
If she lived over that side, she might have taken various routes through the borders. For example, down to Carlisle and across.
Alternatively, she might have travelled via Edinburgh and then down the coach road (old A1) via Berwickshire and into Northumberland.

I did think of mentioning all the scenic routes, Michael, but wondered how she would have got from Lesmahagow to, say, Jedburgh, etc. - via Edinburgh, maybe :-\ :-\ :-\
