Hello there and Welcome to Roots Chat :)
I have had no luck in finding much about the arrival or marriage etc
I would suggest to you that you get a copy of one of the chidrens's birth certificates
because you should find the following information on them
"Birth Certificates
Full name, sex, date and place of birth
Mother's details including full name and maiden name, age, occupation, place of birth
Father's details including full name, age, occupation, place of birth
Date and place of parent's marriage
Previous children of the relationship "
it will cost you about $30 from NSW BDM's
or around $15.00 if you use a transcription agent.
have found a Wilbert Frederick COX dying in 1972 reg no 69480 parents James and Ada (NSW)
so this could be Wilburt F Cocks?
kind regards Jenn

you can "google " transcription agents NSW and find
Joy Murrin
Laurie Turtle to name a couple
I must admit to using Laurie very efficient and friendly and quick, that just my own personal experience.

Hi cfuller1958,
Me again ;D I am still trying to break down this same brick wall! The only thing I have come up with is: *Ada's NSW Birth Reg: 649/1859 MACMULLEN ADA E EDWARD EMMA SYDNEY
649/1859 MCMULLEN ADA E EDWARD EMMA SYDNEY
*I now have a copy of the birth transcription for Ada in my possession, it states that Ada's mother was 17 yrs. old when she gave birth to Ada Esther on the 21st. February 1859 at Elizabeth street Sydney. NSW. Father Edward was 22 yrs. old and gives his birthplace as "At Sea" his occupation at the time of his daughter's birth was given as Coach Builder.
*As far as I can ascertain, Ada was the only child born to Edward & Emma... at least in the NSWindexes. ???
Further enquiries into her father Edwards' background led me to what I think is his arrival in 1857 at age 24 on the 'Beejapore', parents John & Margaret of Glasgow? He was to stay with his brother William who was an Innkeeper in Lower George street Sydney (have had no luck confirming that bit). I had reason to believe that Edward & Emma went to Tasmania but I cant remember why?? Then my search went cold again!
*Edwards' age is out by at least two years here but it is the closest (no only :() thing I have been able to find... another brick wall! I could try his Scottish roots but wanted to follow his Australian history first if possible.
Any ideas???
Regards Jools.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Edward was born at sea, he would have arrived in1837, I think. ???
Jamjar
-
Your'e absolutely right Jamjar :-[ Guess thats explains a lot about why i'm in this pickle eh? ;D. Wev'e been chipping away at this brickwall for so long I must be ready to believe anything! ;D ;D
Ah well back to the drawing board I guess.
Jools
-
Don't lose hope Jools. ;)
Jamjar
P.S. Have just had another think about it. Just because he was born at sea doesn't mean he wasn't born at sea long before coming to Australia, on a voyage to elsewhere. His death certificate would be handy.
Think I've now confused myself, which is easily done. :o
-
Nah I won't but I do feel pretty stupid :o about that last 'faux pas' :-[ ;D ;D
*Edwards' daughter Ada's birth certificate in 1859 states his birthplace as being 'At Sea'.
At the time of his daughter Ada's birth: His age 22yrs. His place and time of Marriage was given as Windsor, NSW. 1858.
You would think they would be easy to find??
I don't know where or when he died??
Jools
Ps He could have lied about being born at sea so as not to betray his real PLOB... for whatever reasons :-\
-
Where was Ada - mother- born?
Jamjar
-
Birth Reg. number: 649- 1859 NSW BDM Sydney
Name given as Ada Esther McMullen. Father: Edward McMullen - Mother: Emma Dunn.
Jools
-
It doesn't appear Emma was born in NSW.
There's a marriage of an Emma Dunn in Windsor , but in '66.
There is always the possibility that they didn't marry.
Jamjar
-
That's certainly possible Jamjar as she was only 17 when Ada was born, 'though under informant, she did cite her name as "Emma McMullen mother Elizabeth Street" (place of birth). He was five years older than her so perhaps he just got back on the boat?? ;)
Jools.

Possible birth: V18432340 27A/1843 Emma DUNN father Nicodemus and mother Elizabeth, no suburb/area.

Sydney Post Office Directory 1857 (Cox & Co).
Here Goulburn Street intersects
Nicodemus Dunn
Tried to figure what it intersects and it could be Elizabeth. All the streets on the same page, reach Elizabeth.

Maybe a long shot but, remember the reference to the Beejapore? maybe it is not him but related just the same as it mentions his brother: William who was an Innkeeper in Lower George street Sydney. Is that the same thing as a licenced Victualler??
Jools.
-
Yes, it's the same thing, I believe.
Jamjar
-
Sorry I'm not much help to you here Jamjar, wouldn't you rather be out celebrating Australia Day 2day instead of looking up my family history ??? I do appreciate it though.
Jools
-
Nope, it's too hot. :(
I am off now to get some groceries, though. ;)
Jamjar
-
Thanks for all your help have fun :)
Jools.

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
Sorry I have been missing in action for long time. Family matters.
Her comes a reall spanner in works. My original research was to do with my Grand Mother Ethel Cocks/Cox. As you know Jools. I have been chassing up Link Up to do with Ethels posible Aboriginality and they are now saying she may have been adopted along with a sister and brother. Possibility that James CoCks was a relo of the father of Ethel. The plot thickens.

HiiiiiY'self!,
Blimey! this family just keeps throwing us curve balls!
Who are suggesting the adoption bit? Tch! ::) I hadn't got Ethels' birth cert as I didn't think I'd need it because I have my Mums and Ada's B'certs. plus various marriage certs. (I opted for every second generation to reduce costs ;)) Looks like I'd better get it, but would it be that informative as to mention adoption on it and possible Aboriginal roots?? Maybe these genies here can shed some more light on that part and tell us where we need to go.
Hope you can stay tuned for a bit to help out, I have to go out this 'arvo but can't wait to get back into this one.
I'd been busy chasing up the other side when I found you here and so I have to get all this info out again to be better prepared!
Jools.

Link up is a Aboriginal orgination that helps link families to their past.
I had to get Dad to sign paperwork as he is the eldest living relo. When I asked him he didn't say his mother wasn't Aboriginal, but didn't say anything.
The problem is Nan would have been classed as a White aboriginal and back then some records just weren't kept. Also if child was adopted by relo's nothing more was said. Also .... Heee heee, not all births were recorded straight away and the adoptive family registered the birth....
My next door neighbour is a aboriginal and comes from the Nowra tribe. She remembers a elder by the name Queenie rose, but unfortunately Queenie has now passed away, so things are getting harder. Wish your mum had of shed some light when she went down there. Why did she go what info did she have to go down there. The government knows more than they are telling us. They put my adult kids on abstudy just recently for Tafe courses and also paying for some of my grand kids school things.... They don't do this unless there is proof of Aboriginality....
See I said the Plot thickens...... LOL
-
On the other hand, I do love a good mystery and a challenge ;) must be in the blood eh? lol
Have to go, be back later,
Jools.
-
I have ordered the birth certificate for Ethel Cox, however this may take a couple of weeks to arrive. Hopefully it may shed some more light.....
Jools.
-
jools
birth cert will be under Cocks for surname
-
You had me running back to double check but yeah I did order for Cocks as it is regd. under that name on the NSW BDM.
Jools.
-
I've been trying to find ways to connect all of the above info but i need more convincing evidence. I think i will just have to wait until Ethels' birth certificate arrives, their email said to allow 2wks... meantime I'll move back over to the other side of the tree :) my oh reckons I'm out of my tree ::)
Jools ;D ;D
