Title: Hill Hall or Mill Hall, Alton
Post by: Simon and Chris on Saturday 09 February 08 22:29 GMT (UK)
In the 1841 Census we have found some relatives apparently on a Farm called Hill Hall or Mill Hall in Alton.  It's next to Brick Kiln Cottages.  Does anyone know anything about this farm or its location, please?

I do have several pictures of Will Hall Farm and house. The house is still there and has only recently been sold by Winchester College (they bought it in the late 1400s and still own the land). Poor William Gunner had just lost his wife in 1841 so it must have been a sad household that Charles was in. I suspect that he was housed in one of the attics. I was up there when the house sold. They must have looked then much as when Charles was there. The Will Hall land butts onto Shalden and an earlier member of Charles’ family may have also worked for the Gunners:-
