Title: Rev Angus J MacVicar
Post by: nannettel on Friday 08 February 08 22:23 GMT (UK)
Hello all,
I'm looking for any genealogy files that would help me determine if this MacVicar family is connected to me.
I only know that the reverend's nickname from his children was THE PADRE. He was born about 1876 Scotland.
The Padre-Angus's father was also named Angus. I don't know his mother's name.
The Padre-Angus married Marjorie (Marsali) MacKenzie.
The Padre-Angus had a son named Angus born 1908 Duror, Southend, Scotland; he is a well known author and died Oct2001.
Other children of the Padre-Angus and Margaret are:
Archie born about 1911
Willie born about 1913
Rona born about 1917
Kenneth born about 1927
John unkown when born
If this family is connected to me, someone would have had to immigrate to Canada.
My earliest confirmed MacVicar/McVicar relative is:
John McVicar born Aug1834 Scotland died 13Jan1908 Gagetown, Michigan. The only information I have for his parents are the names-Angus McVicar and Ann(possibly McAly-or something like that).
John married Ann McDonald 31Mar1862 Ontario, Canada; Ann was born Dec1843 Scotland; died 07Feb1909 Fort William, Ontario, Canada.
Someone once sent me information stating John's wife and mother both had the maiden name MacDonald/McDonald.
If you can help with any information connecting the author Angus MacVicar to me, please contact me.
Thanx
Nannette

I am puzzled, the only Duror that I know (and can find on the map and in CANMORE) is just South of Kentallen.

There are several Southends but I can't see one around there.

Online biographies of Angus MacVicar the author say that he was born 28 Oct 1908 as a son of the Manse and grew up as Southend, Argyll, 8 miles south of Campbeltown.

That is the Southend that I would think of, so I was puzzled by the mention of Duror, unless it is just the name of a house.

John married Ann McDonald 31Mar1862 Ontario, Canada; Ann was born Dec1843 Scotland; died 07Feb1909 Fort William, Ontario, Canada.

The 1900 census shows that this couple immigrated to the US in 1884; their first American-born child was Mary b Michigan May 1885.

John was naturalized by 1901 - have you traced his naturalization papers?

Martin-
I know very little about Scotland, I can only tell you what I read in Angus's book "Salt in my Porridge" on page 17 he writes "She (referring to his mother) and I were alone together when I was born in Duror in October 1908." Then in the next paragrah he writes"When our parents came tot he Southend at the Mull of Kintyre, where five of us were born,........................."
I could have misunderstood what he was referencing. I know he was raised in the Manse; my understanding of that is-it is the house provided by the church.

Anna-
No, I have not  traced any papers yet. I don't know where to start or how to go about that.
Thanx, Nannette

Hi Nannetel,

Did you ever get a satisfactory response to this?

Angus McVicar (born 1908, author, etc) was my Grandfather's cousin (Angus MacAulay from North Uist / Fortingall) and I know he spent time (in his "youth!" and for later visits) in Canada visiting relatives, so if you need more information, I could probably ask around!

I know its an old post, so maybe you've got it all sorted....if so, I'd be keen to see if we connect!!  :-)

In fact, my grandfather's parents were Roderick MacAulay and Mary McVicar; Roderick's brother Alex went to Vancouver and married K.M. MacDonald.  They had three children: Mary, John and Ina.

I guess they are on the MacAulay side, rather than MacVicar, so perhaps it's not what you are interested in, but just thought I'd add it into the mix!  :-)

Thank you for taking the time to reply, even tho it is ian old post. Don't think I ever found out if Duror was the actual name of a place. But I did make the connection of Angus(the author) to my MacVicar/McVicar family. He is my 2nd cousin, 2x removed.
I have Rodrick MacAulay and Mary MacVicar in my tree. Mary is my 1st cousin 3x removed. I have his parents as Rodrick and Mary (Thomson) MacAulay but nothing else for them. I have Mary's parents as Angus John and Isabella(MacLean) MacVicar. I have 5 children for Roderick and Mary. Mary's brother John is my maternal 2nd great grandfather. Any time you want to share/compare info-just send me an email and I will be glad to connect with you.

Hi Nannette,

Your address didn't come through - it was removed!  Can you interpret this (*)

That aside, I am happy to pass my side of the family tree to you, once I get an electronic version sorted!

The only Duror I know of is on the west coast of Scotland near Glencoe / Loch Linhe and the only reference I know of it is a ghost tale called the Maid of Glen Duror!  I'm sure it'll be online somewhere!  ;-)

Have you read any of Angus MacVicar's books?  I have a pile here and it makes mention of the Manse of St Blann's, Southend, which is where I understand he grew up.  This is about 120 miles south of Duror.  There are some photos of the family therein; if you are interested, I can try to scan them and send them over to you!

Kind regards,

Deirdre

I shouldn't have posted my email address. I will try and PM you and send it.
Yes, I'd like to share/compare our files.
I have read a couple of Angus's books; the one I am starting now is Salt in my Porridge. I was looking for some info and someone told me it was in this book.

The entry for Rev. Angus J. McVicar in "Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae" says he was ordained to Duror 31st Jan. 1907, then moved to the parish of Southend in March 1910, so his son Angus b. 1908 would have been born at Duror and moved to Southend as a small child.
Here is a link to the volume of the fasti containing the entry for Angus J. McVicar, southen parish, p68.

As for where Duror is, this handy Gazetteer is great for finding Scottish placenames.

I have only one record of Flight-engineer Angus McVicar, but no details of his family except that he was teh eldest son.  His family were at the "Free church Manse, Dunbeath" so I assume his father was a minister.
Can you help me ?
