Post by: valerie kehoe on Wednesday 31 March 04 01:05 BST (UK)
Does anyoe else have links with  'O'Brien's of Dunmanway c1810? GgrandfatherJohn was born c1829 -his brother Michael in Bandon1830? Parents believed to have been John and Mary (Leary). Also, any link with the sept name of 'Hourihan-O'Brien'? Name was anglicised to 'Bryan' when family resettled in London c1847+. Valerie

Hi Valerie

Sorry we haven't been able to help you so far on this one.

Have you made any progress,  or do you have any further details that could help someone to find what you are looking for?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes

Hi there, - no I haven't received any replies re my O'Briens!  I know there were plenty of them - even in Dunmanway.  I keep thinking there MUST surely be someone out there with a link to mine!  Let's hope 2005 will be more fruitful!

Best wishes - Valerie

Hi,

Dunmanway catholic records are available from Jun 21 1818 in the National Library, too late to find John but perhaps some other siblings would show up.

http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Cork%20South-West&parish=Dunmanway&churchid=48

If there perhaps an O'Brien message board you could try too?

Kate

Hi
I have a Denis Bryan.  First record i have is his marriage in St Clement Danes, Strand, London 0n 7th May1860 to Eliza.
Both give their birthplace as Cork, Ireland, both born in 1837
Their daughter, Catherine/Kathleen/Kate married Joseph Gillings, a painter and decorator at Emanuel Church, Forrest hill on 16/08/1881. Their daughter Winifred was my grandmother.
Denis and Eliza had other children - too may to list but I will if you are interested.
Does this link in at all?
Thanks
Ken

I have some old dates on the O Briens. Not a particular date just references of O Brien's in different centuries. I am looking for Clancy history and OBrien pops up a few times. If your interested I'll post them for you.
  Good luck with your searches

caclancy,

I have an O'Brien-Clancy link too.  Mine is a Thomas O'Brien abt. 1819 who married Mary Clancy b. abt 1823, both in Ireland but don't have an area yet.  their children were James. b 1844, John1856, Michael 1859 and Catherine 1862, probably more as there is a big gap between the birth of James and John.  James was born in Ireland, but by the time John came along the family had moved to Glasgow Scotland.  Any bells ringing?

Sorry I haven't answered back yet :-[. I've been away for a while.

So back to the O'Briens. I just have old some names and dates to give but I hope they will help either or both of Kerry and Ninatoo.

The Irish sept where I found the O'Brien surname was of the Dalcassian origin, which was a branch of the McNamara's, seated in north Clare and their ancestor, Cormac Cas was the son of 3rd century King of Munster, Oilioll Olum. This is where I found the  Clancy's connection to the O'Briens. The Clancys were hereditary brehons to the O'Briens who had great power in county Clare.

Apparently one of the last Clancys brehons rescued Murrough O'Brien(Chief of the Dalcassian Sept). Story goes that in 1543 Murrough returned home to County Clare after accepting a peerage from Henry VIII. The O'Brien clanmen rallied together and ambushed Murrough and was saved when this unknown Clancy( cannot find a first name) diverted the clansmen wrath elsewhere and hide Murrough to safety.  I guess in laymans terms the Clancys were not of the same class as the O'Briens.  They were bodyguards/personal policemen to the O'Briens.

Thats all I have but I find this history fascinating and I am still digging so I will keep you informed. Sorry my info isn't very accurate in the dates though, but it is interesting to say the least ;).  Have a great day.
