where was the workhouse in St Neots Bedfordshire in 1871 and are there any records of the people in there. Thank you
-
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/
Hope its useful.
Linda.
-
Actually mrsben, its in Huntingdonshire.
Linda.
-
Apparently the St. Neots workhouse was at Eaton Socon, Bedfordshire
Who were you looking for?
Barbara
-
Hi Mrsben
You might find this site helpful (it has photographs and a plan):
http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?StNeots/StNeots.shtml
As Barbara says the new workhouse is in Eaton Socon. From the above web site I guess that it lies on the north-east side of the junction between the Great North Road and St Neots road.
All the best
Gobbo
-
Hi Gobbo, yes that's the same website as Linda gave earlier, it's a very good site
but I'm still trying to find the actual workhouse in the 1871 census, normally it would be listed in the enumeration districts :-\
Barbara
-
Hi Barbara
I notice from the web site, which gives the 1881 census, that Eaton socon is in Bedfordshire so Mrsben was right when talking about the St Neots workhouse in Beds.
All the best
Gobbo
-
Yes, she is right, but the older one was in St Neots I believe!
Linda.
-
Yes Barbara, there was a small workhouse in St Neots before the 'new' one was built in 1841/2. The new one concentrated the inmates from a number of small workhouses in and around St Neots.
Gobbo
-
Barbara....
It is listed as St Neots union Workhouse.
one of the pages is ...
RG10/1536 F 124 PAGE 37
it runs to page 43 where there is the last entry.
Does that help?
Tazzie
-
Many things regarding Eaton Socon are available here :-

cheers John

Does that help?
Yes thanks Tazzie, it does, got it now, (how very odd that it's not listed on the enumeration page I looked at) but still waiting for mrsben to tell us all who she's looking for, will bookmark it until I know if she wants an actual person look-up! Don't think I'll list all the inmates if there are 7 pages of them
;D ;D

I am trying to find why Thomas Hilson Woodham born 1858 was in there. the next time i find him he is married to Martha in Gt Staughton.
-
I notice in the 1871 workhouse there is also a Rachel Woodham age 4 born Stow, Hunts.
Back to 1861 in Stow, Hunts there is a Thomas Woodham age 3 (OK its says born Stow & in 1871/1881 he says he's born Eaton) with parents Richard & Fanny, & William F age 6 & Charles 7 mnths. Could that be him ?
Have you got Thomas's father from his marriage to Martha Edis in St Neots 3b/669 in Oct/Dec 1879
I'm also interested in the 'Hilson' name as I have a number of Hillsons in my tree from Little/Great Staughton
Regards John
-
Yes John's right,
1871 RG10/1536 Fol.124 P.42
Rachel Woodham pauper inmate 4 b. Hunts, Stow
Thomas Woodham " " 13 b. Beds, Eaton Socon
in between them are John & Esther Wakefield & 4 children - don't know if that means anything to you, odd if Thomas & Rachel are related that they weren't listed next to each other
Barbara
-
Good thinking Barbara; John Wakefield married a Hester Woodham at St Neots 3b/751 in Oct/Dec 1859.
But the Richard & Fanny(Frances) & son William are still about in Stow, Hunts in 1871 - but Thomas is not with them.
-
* bingo *
1861 census in Gt Catworth has John Wakefield age 46 born Gt Catworth ; Drover & wife Esther age 22 born Stow with 3 year old son in law Thomas Woodham born Stow, plus 8 mnth old Jonathan Wakefield
RG9/973; Folio: 85; Page: 13;
-
Son-in-law often meant stepson
Right, so here are the Wakefields from the 1871 workhouse:
all pauper inmates
WAKEFIELD
John mar 57 Formerly Drover Hunts Gt. Catworth
Esther " 32 " Labr. " Stow
Jonathan 10 " "
Elizabeth 6 " Gt. Catworth
John 4 " Stow
Mary 10 months " "
Waiting for mrsben to come back on-line now!
Barbara :)

1881 living at West Lodge in Leighton, Hunts, lodging with William Bell, widower & his daughter Martha.
RG11/1602 Folio: 64 Page: 16
Esther Wakefield, age 46, widow, born Stow, Hunts
Mary Ann Wakefield, age 10 born Gt Catworth
-
1851 there's a family in Stow, Hunts; transcribed as Wooden
This is real spider's writing on this sheet !
HO107/1750; Folio: 549; Page: 6
W Woodam, head, age 56, widower, born Milton, Beds ; Farm Labourer
Elizabeth Woodam, daughter, age 20, born Stow
Louisa Woodam, daughter, age 12, born Stow
Ester Wood ?, daughter, age 10, born Stow
Eliza Wood ?, daughter, age 7, born Stow
So it seems Esther/Hester Woodham had Thomas Hilson Woodham when she was about 19 & not married - & the father was most likely a Mr. Hillson
& & & who is father W Woodham born 1796 Milton Ernest, Beds ? ?
-
Hi John ....
That matches this family in 1841 ... HO107/451 F 4 P 6
Listed as Wooshaw ??? ::)
Long Stow Hunts .
William Woodham 40 ag lab
Elizabeth 40
Mary Ann 18
Maria 17
William 15
Richard 12
Elizabeth 10
Sarah 7
Esther 2
Louisa 8 months
Christopher dau child 6 months.
There is a William b Milton Ernest 1799 son of Philip & Sarah.
Tazzie
-
Thanks Tazzie,
I notice on the 1841 it says William was born in county; = Hunts.
I have a William W in my tree, chr 1799 Milton Ernest, son of Philip W & Elizabeth (Brown)
..... where did you get Philip & Sarah from ?
John
-
This William Woodham born Milton appears on 1871 & again on 1881 still in Stow, now married to a 74 year old May/Mary born Broughton, Hunts.
A William Thomas Woodham married Mary Ann Clark in Jul/Sept 1879 at Huntingdon RD vol 3b page 425. Wonder if he named his father on the marriage certificate.
** that may be red herring **
1891 has William T age 35 & Mary A Woodham age 37 living in Spaldwick, Hunts
-
Hello John .....
Yes where did I get Sarah From ??? On IGI it is Elizabeth as you say.
Sorry :-[
Tazzie
-

-

Morning 'cousin' Linda , I don't let that thing call work stop me.. I sit at a computer all day so its easy to flip to internet mode.
Anyway I wish Mrs Ben of Bedford would come back & give us some more info on why she's after this Thomas Woodham; & if she knows about anyone called Hillson.
I'm now off out for the day - catch up tonight. John

The BFHS has the Melchbourne Monumental Inscriptions & I had them about a couple of months ago & made some notes regarding the Woodham family. I have 11 names on my list.
I have Thomas Hilton Woodham buried 14/06/1934 age 76,
alongside his wife Martha Harriet buried 03/02/1929 age 68.
Also their son Frank buried 26/09/1959 age 80, with his wife Ada Mary (ne Sturges) buried 02/01/1967 age 85.
Mrs Ben - as you're in Bedford why not visit the Beds FHS meeting - next one is on Fri March 7th see http://www.bfhs.org.uk/
Just come back from a nice sunny but bracing day at Southwold.
Cheers John
-
Mrsben, Susan, ... do you have either or both of :-
birth cert of Thomas H W in St Neots 3b/273 in Oct/Dec 1857
marriage cert of Thomas H W to Martha Edis in St Neots 3b/669 in Oct/Dec 1879
...... & if so who is his named father
Thanks John
-
Is this the same sort of time that your Hiltons were in Staughton John??
Linda.
-
Linda, It is around the same time. A Joseph Hillson b 1847 Little Staughton married Elizabeth Partridge in Eaton Socon; & he did have a number of younger brothers. His father had a number of brothers each potentially providing sons, but I have not really researched the Hillson/Hilson family, as it is one of my out-lying branches.
John
-
Hmm, good chance you may have a link there somewhere then John. We will see what mrs ben comes back with.
Linda.
-
