I am looking for the parents of George Hodgkinson. He was born in 1848 and died in 1892 (Burslem). He married Narah Jones in 1874 (Newport)
-
What was his birthplace shown on the 1881 census
-
Burslem!
-
Hi Bill
First - apologies. 11pm at night and the old eyes don't do what they should (see the birthplace!!)
I've checked the 1851 and there is no George Hodgkinson with a birthplace of Burslem.
The 1861 has no George Hodgkinson but does have a George Hodgkins b 1848 Burslem - parents John & Harriet and siblings William, Thomas, Hannah & David
I've checked the image and it's definitely just Hodgkins
There are a few George Hodgkinson's but with different Staffs birthplaces - I've also checked Hodkinson and checked the Welsh 1851/61 as well just in case
A copy of his marriage cert will give his fathers name which will help to find him
These are the only 2 possible births on freebmd
Births Mar 1847 Hodgkinson George Leek 17 68
Births Sep 1847 Hodgkinson George Wolstanton &c 17 264

Hi
He married Narah Jones in 1874 (Newport)
The 1881 has a 14 year old daughter Harriet b Longton Staffs but Narah was only 30 and George 33 in 1881
-
Something weird here
This 1871 entry fits Harriet's profile but I am not convinced the christian names are Fordyce. It looks to me as follows: Fordgw
Fordyce Hodkinson (see below) 23 b Burslem occ Potter
Sarah 20 b Salop Newport
Harriet 4 b Longton Staffs
Fordyce 1 b Fenton Staffs
RG10; Piece: 2872; Folio: 16; Page: 25
Although indexed as Hodkinson - the enumerator has shown an ^ and inserted a g between the d and the k
I can't find them at the moment on any other census
-
Right - the 1861 Hodgkins family I found check out on the 1871 as Hodgkinson but are indexed as HODHINSON. This is what I reckon:
The 1871 Fordyce is George with his first family. There is an 1866 marriage for a George Hodgkinson on freebmd but no spouse name to check it out. Given that his daughter was called Harriet and so was his mother ..................
A copy of his marriage cert to Narah will show whether he was a widower and will also confirm his fathers name and occupation
1861 census for Fenton - older children all b Burslem
John Hodgkins 39 coal miner b ?? Gowsale
Harriet Hodgkins 33 b Longton
George Hodgkins 13
William Hodgkins 11
Thomas Hodgkins 9
Susannah Hodgkins 7
David Hodgkins 2 b Fenton
Harriet Hodgkins 1 b Fenton
George Monks 23 boarder b Longton
RG9; Piece: 1940; Folio: 11; Page: 16
1871 for Fenton - all children below David also b Fenton
John 50 coalminer b Staffs
Harriet 42
Thomas 19
Susannah 16
David 14
John 8
Edwin 4
Aaron 7 months
RG10; Piece: 2872; Folio: 9; Page: 11

Why do people slightly change their names? Just to confuse us all.
It does look like George married twice.
Narah had a younger sister Sarah Jones (b 1851), both from Newport.
Relevant?

Could well be more than a coincidence but the George Hodgkinson marriage I found in 1866 doesn't cross ref to a Sarah Jones
-
Marriage certificate of George and Narah has arrived! Newport 1874.
George is a batchelor! Occupation - Bricklayer. Father John Hodgkinson (Coal Miner)
Slightly confused now, I was convinced George had 2 marriages.
Has he lied? Was 1871 Hodgkins family an amazing coincidence?
Any thoughts?

Hi
The 1861 entry and the 1871 entry are the same family. They are just spelt differently.
Given that his father was John & a coal miner which ties up with those entries - I'm sure it's the right parents
I can't find George in 1871 - I've tried both the Welsh and English 1871 but no luck
-
His Wife Narah is also missing in 1871. I can't find her anywhere. She is living with parents Caroline and James in 1861.
Interestingly in 1881 Caroline is remarried (James died in 1864) to John Key (Rey). She is living in Newport (341 Watery Lane). There is a grandchild called George Hodgkinson b. about 1870, but no parents. Could this be a child of George and Narah from before they were married? If so where are they? My brain is beginning to hurt so if anyone can help point me in the right direction it would be great.

Hello:
Just a thought could Narah be written as Sarah on the census records? There is a lot of mispelt names on the census records. have a few in my family.
My grandmother's maiden name is Hotchkiss and it comes spelt many different was included Hodgkinson or Hodgekiss. so don;t let the spelling for names put you off.
Cheers
Anne

It is possible that George and Narah are living together in 1871 as Fordgw and Sarah Hodgkinson even though they don't marry until 1874. Their children Harriet and George (Fordgw) turn up in 1881, Harriet with George and Narah, George with Grandma Caroline. It definitely looks like Sarah on census though. Still it explains why George is not widowed on marriage cert, and why George and Narah otherwise disappear in 1871.
Good thinking!
