Hi
I'm looking for Matthew Jackson who married Elizabeth Watson in 1855 in Guisborough.
I have found him in the 1881, 1871, and 1861 census for Guisborough but have not found him yet in 1851 or 1841.
In the other census he says he was born in Wensleydale.
I would be most grateful if someone could find him in the 1851 census for me.
Cheers,
Bry.

Hi Bry,
This may be him in 1841, as his father is Leonard - Matthew's son named after him perhaps?
1841 HO107/1254/8 fol.7 p.9
Preston, Wensley, Preston-under-Scar, Yorkshire
Leonard Jackson 50 Coal Miner
Anne " 20
Matthew " 18 M (I take this to mean Miner ?)
Elizabeth " 10
all born in county
Now to find 1851

The only possible I can see in 1851 is married, so I wonder if he married twice.
Although living in Gateshead, the Donaldsons came from the Yorkshire Dales, and the marriage was at Leyburn:
Matthew Jackson to Elizabeth Donaldson Sept qu 1847 Leyburn 24/379
1851 HO107/2402 fol. p.
Swinburn Place, Gateshead, Durham
Joseph Donaldson head m 52 Labourer Yorks Newsham
Jane " wife m 50 " Moulton
Henry " son s 18 Labourer " Spennithorne
Eleonar " dau 13 At home " "
John " son 11 Scholar " "
Thos. " " 7 " " "
James " " 5 " " Preston
Matthew Jackson son.in.law m 28 Labourer Preston
Elizabeth " visitor m 29 "
Ann " " 4 Scholar Spennithorne
The only way to find out is to get the marriage cert for him and Elizabeth Watson, that would also show his father's name and occupation which would help to confirm (or not) the 1841 census, and show if he was widowed.

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for your help.
They certainly look worthy of further investigation.
Matthew was an iron stone miner in Guisborough and as you've mentioned had a son Leonard who then had a son Matthew who was my gt grandfather.
I will get a copy of his marriage certificate and see if it mentions him as a widow.
Thanks again,
Bry.

I managed to get to the record office today and lookup the marriage details.
According to the certificate, Matthew was a bachelor and aged 21 (but based on the census records I reckon he was closer to 30).
It may be that he didn't know how old he was (it certainly appears that way from the census records).
Unfortunately it doesn't say who his father was, just that Elizabeth's father was John Watson which I already knew.
Perhaps he was not able to write as he and Elizabeth signed their names with an X.
I'll have another search on ancestry tomorrow if I get chance to get to the library in my lunch hour.
Bry.
