Title: Music in Selby 1850
Post by: Lynnr on Friday 07 January 05 17:45 GMT (UK)
Looking for historical info on the town of Selby, approx 1850. My grgr grandfather John Hirst lived at #21 Gowthorp, which I believe was the main street, in the 1851 census, which lists him as a "professor" of music and dealer. I am assuming that perhaps a music shop was downstairs and they lived on top. They are not there in the 1861 census.

Hi gowthorpe is still the main street in Selby - I  go down there most days, could take a digital pic of the building if you like.  I would suspect that if your ancestor was marked down a a professor, he was probably attached to the Abbey.  I'm very local, if there's anything I can help with, do let me know. Thanks for the tip on the Abbey.
And to the kind person who volunteered a picture, yes I would like a picture of #21 Gowthorpe.....should I send you my e-mail address or is there another way?

It looks like you could send your email address as a personal message, so it doesn't go on the public board - I'll get back to you as soon as I can with a picture.  Noticed Regan on your research list - were any of them from this area, too??

William Regan was Irish, he married a Rayfield from the Rochester Kent  area, they went on to raise my grandfather, among others....who came to Canada in 1900, and who married Lavinia Hirst, granddaughter of the John Hirst from Selby.
