Title: Jane Darling wife of Robert Mason.
Post by: frek on Monday 04 February 08 17:00 GMT (UK)
Could anyone help me to trace Jane Darlings baptism please? She would have been born pre 1777.
In addition I would like to trace her death.

Jane married Robert Mason 19.7.1793 at Chirnside.
Jane died after December 1803 (son John born 31.12.1802). Some time after this Robert married Christian Wilson.

There is a headstone in Kelso Churchyard for Robert, Christian  and other family members.  There is no listing for Jane on this.

Any help or advice would be welcome.

Hi Frek

The only one that I can find bpt. Chirnside was in 1782 - a bit too late  :(

Do you have the children of Jane and Robert in bith order, in case the old naming patterns might help  :)

1769  - to Alexander Darling and Mary Utterson
1775  - to Jacob Darling and Isobel Purvis
1777 - to Jacob Darling and Isobel Purvis - obviouslythe 1775 one died  :'(

Just been checking up on their marriage. SP has it as 19 August July 1792. Robert of the parish of Edrom.

Many thanks for all your help. I don't have any births to Robert and Jane other than John in 1802. I think there probably were because of the marriage date in 1792 (I have altered this date)

There are 2 other sons listed on the headstone: George b.c.1811 and Jane b.c.1809. But I do not know if they were issue from Robert's 1st marriage, or his 2nd to Christian Wilson. I don't have the date for this marriage.

Thank you again -frek

Baptisms Kelso, Roxburgh to Robert Mason

31 Dec 1802 John (mother Janet Darling)
3 June 1805 Margaret (mother, Janet Darling)

19 April 1807 Robert (mother - Christian Wilson)
30 Oct 1808 Jean (mother, Christian Wilson)
7 October 1810 George (mother, Christian Wilson)
25 July 1813 William (mother, Christian Wilson)

Jane/Janet must have died after the birth of Margaret in 1805 and before the birth of Robert in 1807.

Given the naming pattern of the children, I would expect Jane's parents to be Mary and Alexander. I think we have a possible baptism:

There are some in the neighbouring parish of Coldingham (all Janets) :

1769  - to Alexander Darling and Mary Utterson

Thank you again for your help - I think I have plenty to be checking now.
Jane must have died between 1805 and 1807 so  will follow that line.

Her son John married Mary Archbold at Embleton (N.Northumberland) who was a sibling from my direct line.

Their children were Robert, William, Jane, John, Frances, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, Margaret and George.

I see some possible connections!.
Cheers.

To frek:

I am a direct desc of Jane Darling and Robert Mason - and I have come to the same conclusions as you have re Robert's two wives.

Have you found out anything since February?

I am new to Rootschat, so hope I am posting correctly.

Very eager to make contact with you.
