Hi
Are you looking for earlier census info or are you looking for post 1901 info?
1901 is the last available online census but we can help with 1891 info if you don't already have it
-
if you could look up the 1891 census that would be great as I am in Scotland so it is not easy for me to get information. Also if you get anything after 1901 that would be great too. I do know that Joseph S Hancox married in Dundee in 1891 to Margaret Gauld and returned to live in West Bromwich where they lived until they died.
-
Hi
Sarah was his second wife
Benjamin Hancox / Sarah Ann Hammonds
December quarter 1896 West Bromwich Volume: 6b
Page: 1489
I'm still looking for the 1891 entry
I do know that Joseph S Hancox married in Dundee in 1891 to Margaret Gauld
Joseph was only born in 1891
-
Hi
This is the only logical Benjamin Hancox entry for 1891 but some of the details do not tie in with the 1901
First - this death
Clara Jane Hancox aged 38 December quarter 1893
West Bromwich Volume: 6b Page: 560
1891 census 75 Greets Green West Bromwich
Benjamin Hancox 30 grocers warehouseman b Gloucester Dursley
Clara Jane 35 b Birmingham Warwickshire
Emma Edith 4 b West Brom
William Frederick 3 b West Brom
In 1901 there is an Edith Hancox b 1887 West Brom working as a servant in Handsworth
-
Thanx for this but could you look in 1901 for this Benjamin Hancox b Gloucester Dursley if its not too much trouble because if he turns up then he is not the same one as I am looking for
-
Already did that and there's nobody with that birthplace. That's what made me think that the 1891 I found was the only logical one given the death of Clara and the re-marriage to Sarah Ann.
There is quite a gap in ages between Joseph & Albert which is another give away of a possible re-marriage
If you look at the 1901 entry you listed - Frederick is shown as Frederick W whereas in 1891 he is William Frederick. You can view the 1901 index for free at
www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk
There are a couple of ways of proving whether I am right. A copy of the marriage cert to Sarah will show his status as widower but will not really give you the proof positive that the 1891 is the right entry. The only conclusive way is as follows:
A copy of one of the 1891 children's birth certs will confirm the mothers name and maiden name
Births Dec 1886
Hancox Emma Edith West Bromwich 6b 778
Births Dec 1887
Hancox William Frederick West Bromwich 6b 748
A copy of one of the 1901 childrens birth certs will give mothers name and maiden name
Albert Hancox Dec qtr 1897 Oct-Nov-Dec West Bromwich 6B 848
Edgar Hancox March qtr 1901 West Bromwich Volume: 6b Page: 860
Benjamin Hancox married Clara Jane Allday September qtr 1886
West Bromwich 6B 930
-
Thanks for all your help looks like you are right I will have to order the certificates to try and sort this family out. :)
-
Got Birth Certificate for Joseph Sidney Hancox Born 17th April 1891,
Mother named as Clara Jane Hancox formerly Allday.
So obviously the 1891 census which was taken before he was born is for the right family.
Got Birth Certificate for Edgar Hancox, which gives his mother as Sarah Ann Hancox late Hammond formerly Wilkes.
So yes there were two marriages.
Found a date for Sarah Wilkes/ Thomas Hammond marriage Dec 1885
Found possible death for Thomas Hammond July 1893
Found date for the Benjamin Hancox /Sarah Hammond marriage Dec 1896
Sorry made a real typing error with Joseph S Hancox married to Margaret Gauld in Dundee should be 1918 not 1891. Already have their marriage certificate.
On it his mother was given as Sarah A Allday but as he was only 2 yrs only when Clara Jane Allday died I’m not surprised he got muddled up with his information.
Got Marriage Certificate for Benjamin Hancox & Clara Jane Allday 19th August 1886 married in the Catholic Apostle Church West Bromwich.
He was 24yrs old bachelor, grocer’s porter living in Tantany Lane West Bromwich.
She a 30yr old spinster at Greets Green Road West Bromwich.
There is no father for her but I suspect she is illegitimate.
His father is given as Benjamin Hancox farm Labourer.
This would seem to disprove earlier theories on this posting that he might be Benjamin Cuff.
I have no knowledge of the Hancox family being Catholic but wonder if this may explain why I can’t find Benjamin’s birth in about 1862. Would this be recorded some where else if they were Catholics?

Religion plays no part in the official registration of a birth (ie) GRO index entries.
IGI transcriptions for Catholic baptisms are a bit thinner on the ground than C of E etc as it was up to the individual bishop of the diocese as to whether they would give the LDS church access to their records for transcription purposes
Have you only looked at the partially transcribed index on freebmd? This is an incomplete index still being added to by volunteers.
You will need to search the full GRO index which is available at your nearest main library if you live in the UK. It can also be searched online if you have an Ancestry subscription or at www.findmypast.com which is a paysite

I've gone back to the 1871 census and there are only 2 entries for a Benjamin Hancox/Hancock with a father Benjamin. Neither have the birthplace shown on the 1891 or 1901
Surname spelt Hancocks - b Birmingham 1859 and father Benjamin was a bootmaker. Benjamin jnr is on the 1881 with a similar occupation
Surname Hancock - b 1860 Yorkshire father was a gardner
The 1861 has one b 1860 Sussex - father was a coal miner
-
I’m still looking for more information on the Benjamin Hancox Family who were at 75 Greets Green West Brom in 1891Census and at 22 Hall Street West Brom 1901 Census.
Benjamin Hancox & his first wife Clara Jane Allday had 3 Children
Emma Edith Hancox b 1886
Frederick W Hancox b 1888 it would also appear he is sometimes know as William F Hancox
Joseph Sydney Hancox b 7th April 1891
I think Clara Jane Allday may have died giving birth to her 4th child as a Clara Jane Hancox was born in same quarter that Clara died. There is then a listing for a Clara Hancox dying in 1894 in Dudley aged 1yr.
Sarah Anne Hammond Ms Wilkes 2nd Wife of Benjamin Hancox had the following 3 Children to Benjamin
Albert Hancox b 1897
Ernest Hancox b 1899?
Edgar Hancox b 11th Dec 1900 at 41 Hall St West Brom
I haven’t found any children from her 1st Marriage to Thomas Hammond.
I found a Frederick W Hancox married a Fanny Lunn in 1920 in West Brom and they had the following 4 Children.
Olive M Hancox b June 1921
Frances Hancox b Sept 1923
Frederick W Hancox b Dec 1926
Dorothy Hancox b March 1929
I am hoping someone could confirm this is the right Frederick W Hancox from my Family!
I also found Albert Hancox married Harriet Rowe in West Brom in 1917 and I have so far found 1 Child.
Eveline Hancox b March 1924.
Again I am hoping someone may have more information which will help confirm this is the right Albert Hancox.
-
hi, Gatherer,
Suggest that you look at:
http://www.mark23.pwp.blueyoner.co.uk/BARRET/HANCOX.htm
I found 33 pages of their family history on there, from around Tipton, Sedgeley, Coseley, so not far from west Bromwich. I have had a very quick look but didn't see a Benjamin but you may pick up other family members. My maternal grandmother's family were Percivals, who married into the Hancox. Makes interesting reading!!

Hi,
My Name is Oliver Flowers My Mother was, before marriage, a Jackie Hancox and had two brothers Martin and Colin. There father is a Roy Hancox, son of Albert Hancox.
Roy had two brothers and two sisters.
Cyril
Albert
Eveline
Phillys
Albert Frederick Hancox was born 10/10/1897 father Benjamin (Railway Laborer) and Mother a Sarah Ann (Hammonds). At the point of Albert's birth they lived at 14 Pleasant St, West Bromwich.
You are correct in that Albert Married Harriet, and at the time Harriet was a Rowe. Rowe was the name of her first husband and her original family name was a Harriet Saddler. Rowe died in the great war hence why she married Albert. I believe that Albert then died at the age of 45. But i can confirm this at a latter date.
I am looking for futher information regarding Benjamin Hancox. Apparently he is, at the time of the 1901 census a Builders Carter, however on Albert's birth cetrtificate he is a Railways Laborer.
I can confirm that all of the research you have done thus far is totally accurate.
What connection are you to the hancox family??
Does any one know of Bens Father and mother???
Help and assistance would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Oliver

Hi Ollie and gatherer,
just a reminder that Ollie will have to have posted at least 3 messages before he is linked into the PM system (it's just a spam deterrant, so no one will mind you posting messages that don't say much on your thread here, just to get you started).

Thanks DudleyWinchurch. Still a newbie at this

Hi gatherer,
someone else with more knowledge may be able to help but I'm not sure that "catholic apostolic" is actually the same as "roman catholic".
-
hi dudleywinchurch,
Many thanks for the tip
-
Hi gatherer,
Please excuse my the delay in response, I have been a little busy of late. I am working on Sunday but will send you a more detailed message from my PC of rather than my iphone on Monday.
When I spoke to my grandad, Roy, about our recent communication he was astounded. My uncle, his son is also called colin! What a coincidence.
Regards,
Oliver

hi
Really excited to find your post as it would appear we are related.
Just to confirm is your Frederick William Hancox born about 1888 to Benjamin Hancox & Clara Jane Allday.
Also did he marry Fanny Lunn in 1920.
If so I would like to communicate further as I have various other bits of information.
You need to post another couple of messages here then we can private message each other.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Tina
From my research your Grandfather died 1951 and is buried in Heath Lane Cemetery with your Grandmother in 1986.
Benjamin Hancox my greatgrandfather died in 1940 & Sarah Ann my step greatgrandmother died in 1931 and are both buried in Heath lane too. Clara Jane his first wife and my greatgrandmother who died in 1893 is buried there too but in a separate grave.
